School Discussion Remains Lively

One look at the 40-plus comments left at our June 16 post and it's easy to see that readers remain energized when it comes to the proposed reconstruction of Dorchester School's 80-year-old main building.

On June 25, reader "Mike" asked if there were there any estimates of tax consequences should the bond authority be approved? We replied with the following update:

According to outgoing Superintendent Ehlers, the board at this time is looking at the $3.9 million replacement project (Option #2) instead of the renovation options. At the July meeting, the board will select a 15-, 20- or 25-year bond schedule. Ehlers said that until that time, only rough estimates are available for the cost of the contemplated school improvements. A $4 million bond issue for Dorchester Public Schools would add the following to property tax bills:

  • 15 year = 28 cents per $100 ($280 per $100,000 of evaluation);

  • 20 year = 23.5 cents per $100 ($235 per $100,000 of evaluation); or

  • 25 year = 20.5 cents per $100 ($205 per $100,000 of evaluation).

Ehlers also told us that currently, there are no penalties levied on schools that do not meet state code unless an agency-- such as the State Fire Marshal -- sees a risk in the building. "It could happen in 2007 or 2057," Ehlers wrote. "It would only take one parent to bring up the ADA issue and the school could be required to meet the needs of certain students. Complying with state codes is only one of the building issues."

A flurry of comments, many substantive, followed. One anonymous reader -- who said "my house payment is sitting in front of me" -- wrote that "another $350 a year (on top of current property costs) for the next 15-25 years" would make things difficult financially. "And what about grandma down the street?" the reader asked.

Reader "C.S.R." took exception with the anonymous reader's figures, responding: "My home is valued right around $100,000. That means if the board goes with the 25-year bond, we'll be paying an extra $17 a month on our property taxes. ... That's a bargain. It's a public education, not a free education."

Another anonymous reader stated that "most elderly and veteran homeowners are eligible for and receive a homestead exemption. This means that if their property is appropriately valued and certain age and/or service time requirements are met, their property is exempt from property tax. "

Reader "Younger Than Dirt" responded to a critic of the proposed construction project by saying that if "you want to change the quality of the school from the inside, you have the change the outside -- more specifically, the building and conditions. How will you get great teachers and administrators to work in a school that will not put some long term dedication into the school?"

"Realistic Grad" reminded readers that while homeowners in town might be able to afford the costs associated with the school construction, a small- or average-sized farmer could easily have at least a $1 million worth of farm land, "so do the math on that one." (That would be about $2,050 in extra taxes on $1 million of farm ground under the 25-year bond option.) Another farm land owner, "Rockin Chair Papa", said: "I know my bank account is going to be a lot smaller when I pay those taxes on my farms' -- to which reader "Bob" responded by saying, "Don't forget (farmers) pay at only 75% of valuation on farm ground."

The discussion continues...

** UPDATE: 06/27, 12:30 p.m. **

We have received a draft of the public notice for the upcoming school bond election, which will be held Sept. 11. According to the notice, District 44 voters will be asked if the school should issue bonds not to exceed $3.995 million to pay for the "demolition of the 1927 school building, site preparation and improvements, constructing additions to and renovation of the 1963 school building and providing for necessary furniture and apparatus for said school building and additions"?

According to the public notice, bonds would "be issued from time to time" as determined by the school board, and "bear interest at a rate or rates to be determined by the Board of Education and to become due at such time or times as may be fixed by the Board of Education."

The ballot will read: “Shall the District cause to be levied and collected annually a special levy of taxes against all the taxable property in said District sufficient in rate and amount to pay the interest and principal of said bonds as the same become due?”

( ) FOR said bonds and tax

( ) AGAINST said bonds and tax

Polls will be open on Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. and remain open until 8 p.m.

  1. Dear C.S.R.,

    Who said anything about FREE?

We're already paying for our public education.

  2. Could there be a time on the 4th of July that the school could be "open for inspection"? Although we would not be voting in Sept, it would give some of us out-of-towners a chance to see what all of the fuss is about.

    ReplyDelete
  3. why to the out of towners need to see it?
its the people who live here that know what is going on?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Actually, District 44 consists of several "out-of-towners" -- some of who happen to be big-time taxpayers and contributors to our school.

Perhaps a school board official will read these posts and suggest another open house is in order. It seems reasonable to us.

As a side note to the "anonymous" reader who sends us multiple comments within minutes of each other: Yes, we can tell the origination of your comments. While we encourage readers to comment early and often, we must draw the line somewhere. We will not allow any individual to abuse this forum. If you want to make multiple points, combine them in a single response. Then take a breath and come back a few hours later.

We will no longer post multiple responses from the same reader if several minutes (or hours) have not elapsed since that reader's latest post.

And again, we strongly encourage readers to sign their comments with a pen name instead of "anonymous."

  5. I can sympathize with any property owner when it comes to taxes, but if any property owner should be concerned, its the co-op. They're the largest property owner in the school district, unless Ted Turner owns some land I don't know about. I don't see the co-op opposing any school improvement projects or calling for consolidation. By the way, to the few who have been cheerleaders for consolidation with Friend, why do you advocate to consolidate with them? Milford would make more economic and geographic sense.

  6. Regarding the above question left by Anonymous, the point of my earlier comment was that an extra $17/mo. for a new school and renovated campus won't break a $100,000 homeowner.

An extra $17 for a new school? That beats the extra $150-$300/mo. it would cost to build a new $15-$20 million school if we ever consolidated. I cannot afford that option.

  7. I am responding to a critique of my comment made on the earlier post.

Yes, I do live in reality. I know that things don't magically happen. Schools are like most businesss, the best people go to the best working environments, and that includes the structure and work space. Would you like to work for a company that has leaking plumbing and most of the building hasn't been updated since 1960?

  8. Build the new school. I fear that nothing will change in our town if we don't start improving things at some point. What better place to start than the place that prepares the next generation?

  9. What kind of people are you? You'll hide behind your Dorchester Times blog wall and keep it some kind of big secret on who you are, but you post a teenager's MySpace website address??

I want to know what was so bad about that MySpace? Did you even bother to look at it before you posted the address? How about doing a search on MySpace and finding some that are a heck of a lot worse than that one. The really bad ones you people can't even get to because they are already set to private.

What happened to not posting personal attacks on people?? That's exactly what that was.

What do you think you accomplished by posting just one of the many teenage MySpace addresses?

If you want to discuss this personally, I'd be happy to do that.

  10. to the writers of this blog,

when will you learn. I cant believe you allow someone to place the address of a minor on this site.

This kids is no different than thousands of others out in the world, and i can gaurantee there are many here in dorchester that are much worse.

What does this do for the morale of this person and the family. i hope they tell you where to put your blog. Might be tough to put it there becasue your head is in the way.

    another mistake, live and learn

i believe an apology is needed.

  11. to younger that dirt,

i think there was a new roof put on the building, a new boiler, hundreds of dollars of paint went into the building over the years, including last year, new air conditioners, thousands of dollars of new wiring for computers, new doors and windows, a new modular building, new siding on the tyke building, new carpet in the library that is less than a year old, new lockers in the locker room, remodeling of the day care and kindergarten rooms, new furniture in the offices, etc.

think you missed a few just so you can get you point across, i didnt

just another good excuse to doze it down and build a new one.

  12. Actually, I'm kind of puzzled as to what myspace has to do with a new school.

And besides, the students that attend Dorchester Public Schools get the proper education that they deserve. The teachers even do a great job teaching them how to S.P.E.L.L.

And by the way, the mentioned site had a nice layout, song, and icons. One of the cleanest accounts that I've seen on myspace.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I find it hard to beleive that posting someones my space address would be approved! I can think of at least 2 laws that have been broken. All you have done is put more idiots on the internet. I've seen this site. If you think this is a problem your head is in the sand. Wake up and look around. There are teenagers in this town that drink,do drugs, smoke, and steal. And you are worried about this site. Get real!! I've never been on this site before because I heard it startd out with good intentions but has turned into one of the worst thing this "family town" needs. The only reason I am on now is because I was told about it and found it to ignorant to ingore. Rest assure, I won't be back!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thank you for being worried about me and my safety but before you write about my myspace you might want to look at someone elses because there is absolutly nothing wrong with my page. If you think there is feel free to tell me because I am not seeing it! And it would be nice if my myspace address was not posted everywhere for anyone to see, but again nothing is wrong with it!

    ReplyDelete
  15. your worried about the youth that have pages like that? If you truely are concerned you should probably be looking somewhere else rather than pages like that.

And another thing, these comments are screened before they are posted, what I want to know is how that got approved. Where does someone get off single one person out to show miss use of myspace. when I know there are many pages that are worse than that.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Myspace.com link sent to us by "anonymous" has been removed.

We were unfamiliar with the Myspace domain and should have viewed the site more carefully. Although Myspace pages are considered public sites, just as this site, upon further consideration, we prefer not to have such links posted on our site since Myspace pages are created by and for certain individuals. Now we know.

We apologize for our unfamiliarity with Myspace and to those individuals who may have been offended. The Times will not post such links in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  17. anonymous........

Can you tell me what it is you see offensive in Chelsea's MySpace? A few cuss words-big deal.

If you felt strongly enough about it that you had to post it on here, maybe you could enlighten me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i'm the one who sent in the myspace link and I'm disapointed it was taken down. I didn't want to attack the author of the myspace site but to expose what some youth in town are doing. The myspace site contained a drug-related content in a post by someone named Kayla Mae whose post bragged about a website where kids can buy pot, or as the post said, ‘potent bud’

kayla may's post also talked about a guy who worked for the post office who ‘blasted up’ before driving his route and then wrecked his truck. The post office fired him and now he’s selling drugs. LOL. (Boy, that’s so funny. Talk about Whiskey Tango. that's nice for 'white trash')

I’m in my mid-20s and I had to shake my head after reading that post kayla may. I guess things have really changed from when I was in school just 8 years ago. Instead of defending yer kids at all costs, PARENTS, MONITOR WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE DOING ONLINE! We are raising a bunch of Kid Rock/Welfare Queen wannabe’s.

Instead of talking about pot online, watching soft porn on cable/dish TV, listening to worthless rap/thug music, etc., imagine if the kids & their parents were volunteering and improving things in town or improving their grades. instead, parents almost encourage this type of behavior by not monitoring their kids activites.

So go ahead and take down the link but i think it was related to the school issue. It made me question if Dorchester should even bother investing in a new school considering the character of the kids?????

  19. Dear anonymous.....

You OBVIOUSLY DON'T HAVE A CLUE about MySpace, do you? And, why, if the post to Chelsea's MySpace was made by Kayla, did you choose to post Chelsea's MySpace address and not Kayla's????????

If you would have bothered to do ANY RESEARCH AT ALL or if you knew anything at all about MySpace, then you would also know that the post SUPPOSEDLY made by Kayla was SPAM!!!!!! And it was posted to EVERY SINGLE CONTACT ON KAYLA'S friends list. Not a relfection of Chelsea OR Kayla---SPAM!!

Get your crap together before you start making accusations like that on a public forum especially about ONE SPECIFIC PERSON!!!!

YOU owe Chelsea a public apology.

    SPAM----SPAM----SPAM!!!

  20. Dear anonymous,
You know you may be in you mid 20's, whatever, that does not make you smart. I would like to inform you that, that post from kayla is a virus post anyone in their right mind that actually knows the two of us would realize that. But you obviously dont. And you want to talk about volunteering and character to me, are you kidding me. Kayla and i both are very active in school where we do plenty of volunteering and helping the commnity. So before you single out my page because of a virus posted site maybe you should look around at the real problems that are going on!Oh and I do not understand where you can say that the youth watch "soft porn" omg get a life come on. That is just wierd seriously, and who are you to say a kind of music is wourthless that is ur opinion if u dont like the music dont listen to it, its simple! I dont think you need to worry about my page, I am 17, I think maybe you should look at some of these little 13 year old pages who are exposing themselves a little too much, that is what we should be worried about!

  21. way to go chelsea

just goes to show you what this blog site is doing to this community

post your articles and leave out the section for comments. It would improve the whole site

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't know what all this nonsense is about someones MySpace page and I don't really care. What I want to know is has anyone stopped fighting with each other long enough to notice the improvements that are taking place in this town? Tyser is fixing up his old building, Klein has started working on the new park shelter, Sheryll is adding on to Westside Saloon, plans are in place for 4th of July activities, etc. So why don't everyone stop attacking each other and start taking a look at the good things happening in our community. This site is a place for constructive discussion and I haven't seen that happening lately.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for giving us your side of the story, Chelsea. While we realize your Myspace site can be accessed by any member of the public, we would not have posted the link had we realized the site was dedicated to one individual. Again, we apologize.

And to the "anonymous" writer who said the Times should quit posting comments because of "what this site is doing to the community", spare us the emotional hyperbole.

Your negative comments have become predictable. Yet we aren't exactly sure what corner of the Third World you want to shrink into, since interactive media is fairly common nowadays.

Of course, there are pros and cons with the reader comments -- as we found out today. But if you don't like the Times, we recommend you do what Chelsea suggested above when it comes to rap music.

In the meantime, we will continue to post all comments -- positive and negative -- as long as they do not violate the standards of the Times. This is the community's site, and the community will ultimately be better because of the open dialogue.

    ReplyDelete
  24. why is this person so concerned about her character. selling bud over the internet? how stupid do you think people are (they are aware creeps are reading their comments) so because of a SPAM comment on a going to be seniors myspace this person thinks Dorchester shouldn't even bother investing in a new school considering the character? Think again

  25. to the dweller,

    i have a suggestion.

there will be a ton of people in town on the 4th of July. set you up a table and do survey.

see how many people have gone to your site and see how many people believe it is a postitive for the community

    ReplyDelete
  26. to the dwelller,

    i have an observation.

the only ones complaining about this blog are one of the following types:

    a) those who are ashamed that their actions/sloppiness have been noticed by others.

    b) those who might have to work harder due to the complaints registered on this site.

    c) those who would rather keep their heads buried in the sand.

  27. Bob and Anonomous:

We get many comments everyday and we do our best to sort them out, all while trying to publish our news stories and improve the Web site. Some of the reader comments posted following a story may anger a reader now and again. Some have angered us. But the nine of us at the Times do our best to block the personally offensive material.

Those who dislike the reader commentary that is posted have more of a problem with the concept of free speech than they do with the Times. But like this publication, the first amendment of the Bill of Rights isn't going anywhere, despite an occasional howl of protest.

Thank you for reading the Times and for leaving your comments.
