- Championship Game: Drew Denker's team defeated Andy Nichols' team, 43-32
- Consolation Game: Brent Zoubek's team defeated Baxter Papik's team, 74-44
- Fifth Place Game: Jordan Hromek's team defeated Lyle Weber's team, 67-60
- Seventh Place Game: Kurt Bleach's team defeated Jason Weber's team, 39-37
- Ninth Place Game: Rick Hays' team defeated Brandon Vyhnalek's team, 43-42
- Eleventh Place Game: Andrea Hansen's team received a bye
On a related note, we hear that Pat Vyhnalek (Class of '89) did sustain a torn ACL on the court during his team's Friday night contest. He is scheduled to undergo surgery next week. Also, we are told that Nicole Vyhnalek's team took first place honors in the alumni volleyball tournament.
I thought the first year of having both alumni volleyball and basketball turned out to be a good idea. Hopefully this will continue in years to come! Way to go class of '03-'05 on your volleyball championship!
ReplyDeleteGo figure, the DHS class of '03 wins yet another title....
ReplyDelete(yawn)
Wham Bam Jam! Its in the Books Baaaaaby! Denker and the gang claim ANOTHER title in the big dance!! It sure isnt their first rodeo, they know how to get the job done in March! They are some P.T.P-ers, PRIME TIME PLAYERS!
ReplyDeletePat V. Sorry to hear the news about your knee. Im you wishing a full recovery from me, and the rest of my family here at ESPN
Yeah i've seen Denker play, he is an amazing player, best i've ever played with. - Kant -
ReplyDeleteYeah i've seen Denker play, he is one of the most amazing players ever...best i've ever played with by far! Kant
ReplyDeleteDrew Denker reminds me of a young Rasheed Wallace...he's got the body of a big man yet he can play from behind the arc...Just amazing!
ReplyDeleteCrum
I guess now we know who the LONGHORN STUD HOOPSTER really is.
ReplyDeleteWell Crum, i'm not sure about a young Rasheed...I was thinking more along the lines of a Karl Malone, you are underestimating his raw power.
ReplyDeleteDenker's team almost lost to L. Weber's team who is the oldest team playing in the tourney...they're not that good. The talent pool isn't what is use to be!
ReplyDeleteJohn Crumrine
ReplyDeleteMichael Kant
Drew Denker
wow
Best overall team has to be the Zoubek-Kirkpatrick-Feeken-Nohavec-Karl-Rains-Gish team, right? They made the championship four of the last five years and won the trophy in 06 and 08 handily. This year they beat their opponent by 30 in the third place game after getting robbed by one point to a Denker team that has connections to Lance Armstrong (ie, illegal substances).
ReplyDeleteOh, and where did Denker's crew end up last year? Sixth place ring a bell?
Drew Denker once hit a game winning shot at the buzzer...his team was down 4!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Drew...me and the rest of team are proud of you...wish you had a couple years left to play for me.
ReplyDeleteSup Drew, I knew you would represent, hit me up later, I forgot some of the tips you gave to help my game out.
ReplyDeleteDenker's team has won 4 Championships in 6 years...and has lost 2 games TOTAL in those 6 years. only TWO loses in SIX years?! Thats impressive!
ReplyDeleteSince nobody else has enough class and respect to do it;
ReplyDeleteI'd like to Congratulate Scott, Cassie, Drew, Philip, Adam, Brian, Jeff, and Jake on another championship this year. It's always a fun tournament to watch and you always seem to do well. Nobody can deny all your championships in so few years. Keep up the good work!
All the good stuff came out of the Class of 2003 right????
ReplyDeleteWow ... more than ever, I wish there was an alumni football game.
ReplyDeleteThat's all.
Not to be rude or anything, but I have a lot more respect for the great alumni b-ball players who get the job done and don't make a show of it, unless of course the other team tries to push 'em around. ;) I happen to be married to one of those players and I'm proud of how his team did considering the circumstances this year. It's almuni b-ball for crying out loud--it's about having fun, not trying to be a show-off. That being said, I sure look forward to next year!
ReplyDeleteA big thanks to Mr. Pohl for running a great tournament! Congrats to the Class of 2003. I am a little concerned about the class of 2001. They have only lost one game since they won the championship in 2003 when they have Weber AND Springer AND Bergmeyer playing (an overtime loss to my beloved class of 2003). They beat the class of 2003 handily last year. I am already nervous about their early round meeting with the class of 2001 next year. My boy Drew's shooting percentage has dropped tremendously since he quit playing basketball for 2 hours every day at Doane and I think that Springer will be back with a vengeance. Should be quite the matchup in 2010!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDrew Denker is over rated... Brandon Vyhnalek scored 37 points in one game alone... ya he may not have the quality of players to back him up like drew does... but when was the last time drew scored that many points in a single game... and next year... ha ha ha you better watch out '03 because then bruha and vyhnalek will be together = double trouble
ReplyDelete37 points
ReplyDeletebut how many games did they win?
Team game, always has been, always will be
C.S:
ReplyDeleteLet’s get real. Not to mention any names, but the player in the aforementioned post has never even been a mere threat to Longhorn Athletics since “he” or “she” was in junior high …and that may even be a stretch. 37 points on a team like that is not something to be proud of. Some of the good players could rack up 60 … on their own.
A Dorchester alumni tournament is always “watered down” when the best players in D. Nelsen, Springer, Slepicka and a healthy Dan Rezac are not in attendance. Take nothing away from the ’03 squad. They are good, no question about it, but I’ve been attending the alumni tournament now for over a decade and a half and the best team by far is ’00 or ’01. Not sure what year they are. I’ve seen them not only win it all – but do it with only 5 players (1 being a female and 1 never having touched a basketball before). I hope Nelsen, Slepicka and Springer are in attendance next year to really make the alumni tournament what it should be. The alumni tournament this year (although enjoyable) was like the feeling we all had when we discovered Terry Smith was heading to Meridian. It just didn’t feel right.
We believe the referrences to individuals under this post were made in good humor or by the individuals themselves. Right Drew? :)
ReplyDeleteHowever, no further comments referring to individuals by name will published, in adherence to the Times comment policy.
Thank you.
You have to be impressed with the old guys. To still be as competitive as they are at 40ish is not bad. Either they are good or the young bucks aren't. We will see what happens when the superstar team is 40.
ReplyDeleteUnless you were smoking something illegal (or legal in Amsterdam) the past five years you know that the Brent Zoubek team has been the most consistent team really since the start of the alumni tournament. They could use Gene Slamas 3 point shooting again but overall their talent is superior as a team and harkens back to a time when all was good and pure in DHS-ville.
ReplyDeleteAs one who fell in between the amazing Dorchester talent of the mid- to late-80s and the 2000s, I can tell you that there's no comparison.
ReplyDeleteThat is not an insult aimed at the 2000s teams. I don't think Dorchester ever had as much talent concentrated in so few years as it did from 1985-89.
Maybe in football from 1975-79...?
I agree with you 90's grad. Although I do feel that 2001 was and is as solid a Dorchester basketball team can get, the talent from the 80's was few and far between. A healthy and young team from the 80's beats the '03 class by at least 25 points. But the class from '01 beats the 80's team based on cohesive team play and great shooting. This is just an old timer's opinion.
ReplyDeleteI was an underclassman the last time DHS had a quality team. 84-89 was easily the best of times for DHS roundball. C-1 and C-2 competition and still in the top 10 year after year. You young pups really have no idea how tough it is to play Sutton, Henderson, Tri-County, Lincoln Christian, and on and on. Crossroads is a solid class D conference, but it doesn't hold a candle to the teams in class C1 and C2.
ReplyDeleteYou might win the tourney now, but your lack of fundamental and schematic basketball outs you like a pride parade in San Francisco. The players in the tourney now are a bunch of showboats, with no team concept. You youngens can pump your chest all you want, but the age of Slepicka and Frahm was without a doubt, the best team ball of DHS.
It's nice to see the '01 team getting positive recognition even after a tough year at the alumni tourney. For all 3 of their games they only had 5 players available and for most of the first game they played with 4 due to an injury. The fact that they didn't get completely whipped says something. I look forward to next year--hopefully all members of the team will be in attendance. If so, they can handle that '03 team....
ReplyDelete'01 and '03 are 1 and 1 against eachother full strength in head to head play. It'd be a good matchup in 2010
ReplyDelete01 vs. 03 would be good for a fifth place game. 92-96 will win it again next year. they seem to go in two year cycles.
ReplyDeleteI'm still sore!!! Does anyone know if the gym is open on Sunday's?
ReplyDeleteI dont think the gym is open on Sundays anymore. Youd need to contact Jamie Karl more than likely.
