DHS Boys Basketball Team Tops Rival Friend, 53-48

On Tuesday night, in a crowded Dorchester gymnasium, the DHS boys basketball team defeated next-door rival Friend by a tally of 53-48. DHS is in Class D-1, while Friend is in Class C-2.

The Longhorns led the Bulldogs comfortably going into halftime, commanding a 30-20 advantage. Friend managed to cut into that margin in the third quarter, but never succeeded in upending the scrappier DHS squad. Scorers for Dorchester were: Zoubek 7, Lee 12, Palky 5, Walton 8, Kotas 15, and Kalkwarf 6.

Meanwhile, the Lady Longhorns fell to Friend in the night's earlier contest, 55-46. DHS stayed with the Lady Bulldogs throughout the first half, but could not stop three Friend players who scored a combined total of 40 points. DHS' Karmen Lawver lead all scorers with 16. Other Dorchester scorers were: Havlat 9, Carroll 1, Hewitt 2, Springer 10, and Behrens 8.

We urge you to support the Longhorns as the season enters the second half. See the left-hand column of this Web site for a complete tally of the DHS basketball seasons.

  2. Congrats on the victory, Horns. My concern is the attitude these kids are putting on display while playing. Where is the respect for the game, the coaches, and themselves? I was embarassed by some's actions. Lets hope we can improve throughout the season and have a successful one. Good luck and Go Big D!

  3. Come on now CJ....that is quite a statement. Must have had a bad experience at some point in time with Friend. I was at the game and I too witnessed some attitudes by the Dorchester players. I wonder where they get that from when you as an adult(?) make comments like that. Do they always play with such attitudes? It was fun to see the talent playing but could have done without the cockiness that was on display. I agree with Anonymous above that shows no respect for the game. Good game otherwise and good win for Dorchester but lose the attitude and bring back some respect.

  4. Rivalries tend to bring out the best and worst in everyone. They should be encouraged in high school sports but tempered by coaches and teachers.

That said I am always glad when Dorchester beats Friend. Call me a bad influence or misguided by previous generations, competing with thy neighbor, espeially one with an air of superiority, seems perfectly normal and healthy.

  5. But let's not forget that the Lady Longhorns lost to the Lady Bulldogs. That was a good game without the attitudes. It can be done! And yes, the coaches need to put a stop to the disrespect shown by some players. That is their job as a coach.

  7. dunking in warmups is against the rule.

Just because the officials are not on the floor, its still a rule.

Just like telling your kids its ok to drink or speed or steal, as long as you dont get caught.

and........flipping off the crowd....that should get a person suspended for the rest of the year.

someone, coach, admistration, or ad should step up and get er done

  8. Friend & Dorchester have been rivals for years!!! Friend was always known, at least in my day, as being dirty players. Today, it's known as "attitude". They would do whatever they could get away with. So I'm always glad to see DHS kick the snot out of FHS. Adults need to show by example, how to handle such a rivalry. Coaches, parents, school staff, etc, lets show our athletes how to have a respectful attitude with our playing abilities. GO BIG D!

  9. i have a novel idea!!! how about the fans let the coaches and players worry about what attitude you think they have on the court? im sure the basketball players know how to handle themselves. but thanks for the concern ;)

  10. Obviously, the players do not know how to conduct themselves. There would not be multiple people agreeing on the attitude problem of individuals on this team if there was not an issue. Players represent the school and town they play for. Participating in athletics is a privalege, not a right. Treat it as such.

  11. and as such, if you dont like the way the players conduct themselves...... dont go to the games. i love going to the games, because i know when i played basketball a little trash talk always went on, and it is a psychological advantage if you can get into another players head. especially when youre playing friend.

  12. What about the opposite being true and other teams getting into the Dorchester players' heads? Or didn't you go to the Meridian game? If you did, see what the consequences of inappropriate behavior can lead to?
