Wanted: Your Suggestions For School's Time Capsule

According to an e-mail we received from several readers, Dorchester Public School superintendent Brian Redinger is taking recommendations for items to be placed in the school's time capsule. (Note: Click on photos to get a closer view.)

The Times has learned that the new time capsule will likely be included inside the new bell monument, which will be built with funds from the Dorchester Alumni Association.

The bell monument and 2009 time capsule will be dedicated during the upcoming DHS Alumni Banquet, scheduled for May 23.

We are pleased to see current leaders at DPS demonstrate so much thoughtfulness and make a worthwhile effort for future residents of Dorchester. Times readers, DHS alumni and others who are interested in submitting a list of the ten items they think should be included in the 2009 time capsule should e-mail Superintendent Redinger at bredinger@esu6.org.

In the months leading up to the razing of the 1928 school building, the cornerstone of the 80-year-old school provided for much speculation and discussion. When it was opened last spring, the cornerstone contained a time capsule from 1927, providing much insight into the town's earlier days.

Sealed inside a metal container, items in the cornerstone included newspapers from Dorchester, Lincoln and Omaha; autographed pictures of the DHS Class of 1928; materials pertaining to Dorchester's Masonic lodge; and information regarding a handful of Dorchester area citizens who resorted to legal tactics in an attempt to prevent the construction of the 1927 school.

  1. I would like to see a Dorchester boys basketball uniform place in the capsule. From what i hear there might not even be a team in coming years due to the lack of participation by current students. Maybe the uniform will become an instant antique and a reminder of how important it is for parents to encourage their kids to do more than play Guitar Hero and watch TV.

  2. I wish I knew more of what goes on at that school, and what I have to look forward to for my children in upcoming years. I hear many many negative things, and just don't know what to believe or what is actually going on at our school. Is Dorchester really as bad in high school as people say it is? and if so, why is'nt anything being done about it?

To first anonymous - You should know by now (even though you sound young) that the positive stories don't last long down the information hwy, it's the negative (gossip) that lasts forever getting bigger & better as it goes. Don't go by what you hear, find out for yourself.

  6. Funny thing, Dweller, that your poll shows a 60%-40% split. IRONICALLY, that's the same ratio by which the new school was approved.

Could it be that the NAYSAYERS are just finding things to complain about, that they will always find things to complain about, that they will NEVER be happy?

  7. How about a copy of The United States Constitution? Maybe when the time capsule is opened, some one will actually read it, and reinstitute it!

It is apparent no one in our current Federal System has any idea what is in the Constitution, or takes their oath of office seriously!

How about a current year book, and one of each kind of coin, in the current year, and a dollar bill!

  9. I like what JR said. I would agree. By the time this could be opened we could have different money as well. (one world bank) Put things in there that pertain to the world and not just Dorchester alone.

Is it possible to get airial pictures of the town to put in there ?!?!?! I think some sort of paper or cloth and put it out for all the students to sign over a period of time and put that in there. You could even break it up into classes and include pictures of each class as well. Let be creative ! ! ! !

  10. Dweller,
I have sensed a change in the quality of the editing done in the past 2 months or so. The comments posted have gotten more negative, less german to the topic, and are contradicting your own policy more.

It's an unfortunate change, due to the impact that the times has. Just because it's a blog doesn't mean that it can't be done better. Require that people improve their contributions and perhaps the effect of the blog will be more positive. Perhaps if it were edited better people would be more likely to use their names and/or a name without fear of being libeled.

If you don't have time to do it well...slow down and do it better.

We do not "edit" comments. We simply publish them or reject them.

    Thanks for reading the Times.

  12. Keep at it, Dweller. Your own poll said that 75% or more of this blog's readers want to keep the comments. I think you're obligated to print all of them if you truly believe in the First Amendment!

  13. I for one am tired of hearing people gripe. If you can do a better job on a blog start one up yourself or quit reading this one. Better yet, get a cat and you can complain to it all day.
