Pray For Rain

The precipitation deficit is taking a serious toll on Nebraska, including Saline County.

On Sunday, as temperatures hit the upper 80s and wind gusts were as high as 50 miles an hour, firefighters in Saline, Gage, and Lancaster counties spent the day fighting field fires that raged out-of-control.

News Channel Nebraska reports that one of the fires that started in northern Gage County pushed into Lancaster and Saline counties, prompting evacuations in Lancaster County. (The news outlet reports the fires were under control as of 8 p.m. Sunday.)

At least three residences have been destroyed, reports 10/11 News -- and at least two firefighters have sustained injuries.

Farmers in the area were asked to turn on their center pivot irrigation systems to slow the raging fires.

Here are some of the images from today. They look like scenes from the 1930s Dust Bowl.

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows that "extreme" and "exceptional" drought conditions are moving closer to Saline County.

Meanwhile, Monday and Thursday of this week finally bring some reasonably good chances of rain.

Pray for rain.
