A few months ago, we informed readers that officials at City Hall in Dorchester had issued a couple of important notices.
Today, we are reminding Dorchester residents of these recent changes in village administration rules:
- Delinquent Electricity/Water Accounts: Courtesy calls will no longer be made on delinquent accounts. Delinquent payments must be received no later than the last day of the month for which the payment is due. Electricity disconnections will be the first business day of each month for all unpaid delinquent accounts. Reconnect fees are $50 with the total account due in cash or money order. Payment extensions will no longer be honored.
- Pet License: Your dog and/or cat must have a Dorchester license. Period. No exceptions. Pet licenses are $2 each. All dogs and cats must be chained, fenced or kept in a kennel or home at all times, per village law.
You're kidding, right?
ReplyDeleteI agree with David. This board is going to run everyone out of town
ReplyDeleteWHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? Why are you complaining about not paying your bills or a $2 registration fee for flea-ridden pets. Get a life. Or go move to the country next to the Clampetts. You're probably the reason there's only 4 boys out for football this year. We need a good flushing.
ReplyDeleteI no longer live in Dorchester but for what it's worth, I wish my city was upgrading its water system like you guys.
ReplyDeleteAs for the dog license, every small town seems to have a few people that let their pets roam, so this is an inexpensive way to deal with problem pet owners. If you can't afford $2, you can't afford a pet.
If you don't pay your bills, you get your services cut off. What's the controversy with that?
ReplyDeleteThe 'courtesy call' was small-town friendly. But, I guess it is no more.
DeleteThe $50 'reconnect fee' simply sucks. That's just a 'money maker.'
Seems the 'government', any government, spends their time trying to make money off the citizens in other ways besides taxes.
Yes, if you don't pay your bills, your services get cut off. But you shouldn't get gouged when you pay your bill late.
I am wondering if I can get a job as the Dorchester Dog Catcher to enforce this law or do we have one in place already??
ReplyDeleteA $2 fee? That's ridiculous and far too diplomatic. In Ukraine, they are making a sport out of killing stray mutt's. Dorchester could do the same and start a new tourism craze.

Lets start enforcing all the ordinances then instead of just a few. We have a curfew in this town for kids. I've re trying to get rid go the dogs, lets get the kids off the streets also. What do you think of that?
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm not mean like many others commenting on this site. I just want to thank the dorchester times for posting this. Yes i received it in the mail but it's nice to see in in electronic form too.
ReplyDeleteI want to know what the $2 fee is for? Are you actually going to catch the stray dogs running town? Then what? I don't mind paying the $2 fee, but if it's a fee that is going to be collected and the damn dogs will still be running around town, then forget it, I'll keep my $2.
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing, I would like to see our per gallon water rate compared to surrounding towns. I know our bill is way to high! You want people to move to Dorchester, maybe someone should re-visit the utility rates.
And why no courtesy calls anymore? Too busy? I find that hard to believe, sorry. That is part of the "charm" of living in a small town.
When did the rule about Cats/dogs go into effect? I don't have a problem with the licensing fee but am unhappy about the part that says my cat has to be corraled at all times. I have a 3 year old spayed outside cat, she stays home and doesn't cause problems, I don't see the problem.
ReplyDeleteI do not have a problem with the licensing fee, but you cannot keep a cat safely on a leash. The cat will end up being strangled when they climb a tree and jump on something and then jump down. And as for keeping a collar on a cat, they now all have releases so the cat doesn't strangle themselves when the collar gets caught. It took my cat 1 day, and the collar was off and lost somewhere. The city of Lincoln tried to pass a law about keeping a cat on a leash, and nothing ever came of it because it was dangerous for cats. I think the village board needs to rethink this one.
ReplyDeleteI hate the fact the town is making upgrades to its water delivery system. I hate that we can't let our dogs and cats run around town unlicensed. I hate that I can't be a freeloader and the "man" is making me pay my utilities.
ReplyDeleteI hate responsibility and progress.
Love,
The Neanderthal
When driving to Dorchester from the east - awesome view of the water towers - seeing Dorchester's past and present. It makes me feel a little sentimental.
ReplyDeleteReaders:
ReplyDeleteWe want to issue a reminder that the Times will not publish comments mentioning the names of specific individuals, unless those individuals are public officials.
Even in cases in which the named individuals are elected officials or serving in other public roles, the Times will use discretion to discern as to whether the comment is related to a decision or policy --or if it is a personal attack.
We will not publish the latter.
when is the next town hall meeting? i would like to be there
ReplyDeleteIf people would learn how to budget their money, and pay necessities ( gas, water, etc) instead of wants ( eating out, newest cell phone, lottery, etc) then paying their bills on time would not be an issue. Also a pet license fee is very low. If you cannot afford that, then you cannot afford a pet. I do agree with other bloggers that utility fees here in Dorchester are way out of line.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget those other necessities ... tattoos, alcohol, cigs. You know? All that stuff that makes you so classy.
DeleteAt one time, I think the city board was looking at allowing Norris Public Power to take over the electricity. Does anyone know the latest on those talks???
ReplyDeleteVillage board meetings are the 1st Monday of every month unless that is a holiday then it is Yuesday.
