It's Official: Dorchester-Milford Sports Merger OK'd By Milford School Board
The Times has learned that the Milford School Public Schools Board has approved a sports co-op with Dorchester Public Schools that could start as early as next year. The Milfod board approved the sports merger during its meeting this week.
The Milford Times reports on this development, noting that Milford Superintendent Kevin Wingard said: "(Dorchester) wants their kids to be able to participate (in activities) and they’re afraid they won’t be able to do it on their own."
The Milford board approved a two-year junior high football merger with DPS starting next season, a two-year varsity wrestling co-op beginning in the same year, and a two-year football coop beginning with the 2014-2015 season if projected combined enrollment numbers fall in the Class C-1 range. “The third motion made it clear that if we’re ever in danger of moving to Class B in football the coop would be over immediately,” Wingard said. “We’re not going to be able to make a move to Class B.”
The sports merger is currently going to include junior high football, varsity high school wrestling and high school football, but could include other sports and activities down the road, Wingard said. He said the schools cannot start the football co-op until the 2014 season because of the way the Nebraska School Activities Association schedules football two years in advance. However, Wingard said an appeal will be made in hopes that football players coming from Dorchester would be able to play next season.
If the appeal is denied, Wingard said there are other alternatives to get the Dorchester athletes on the field, but those will have to be discussed at a later date, he said. Wingard said the co-op could be utilized for other activities in addition to sports. “We’re not sure where it’s going but we know these are on a two-year trial,” he said.

ReplyDeleteJust the first step in losing our school
Let me guess, the comment above is from one of the two families who've moved their kids to other schools?????
ReplyDeleteWant to make a bet who is unhappy and blaming others in another 5 years? Call the WAH-BULANCE!
Wrong answer buddy
ReplyDeleteI live in town
Look at the past histories First the school, then the town
Hell, if the school goes we won't need to pave any streets, ther won't be a town
Did anyone stop to think how much this merger is going to cost the people in this community
ReplyDeleteWe are paying off a 4plus million dollar bond and now more
Gas at 4bucks a gallon
Paying a bus driver
Plus the cost of parents getting to games
new uniforms Milford isn't going to pay for all of them
At least 50 bucks a throw
New helmets. 200 a piece
Stop before its too late. To late already done
Plus all the people on the west end of the district will be heading to friend
Poor decision school board
Typical hysteria on this blog.
ReplyDeleteA couple of people overreacting an causing all the problems. I guess in that sense, Dorchester is no different than any other community anywhere in the world.
Tell you what, all those who are threating to leave, please leave. Take your ball, go home, go to another school so they can house your issues. The sooner you are away from us and our kids, the better. Get the cancer out of the system.
This coop is taking place out of necessity. Its the right move for the kids and doing it with milford is the right call, plain and simple.
I think these two schools will have lots of success on the athletic fields as a team. Support the kids!
ReplyDeleteSM, I could't of had said it better myself! It's good for the students, it's only for 2 years and we revisit it every 2 years. People overreacting take a Xanax and move on.
ReplyDeleteI'm told the new uniforms will look much like the Baltimore Ravens!
ReplyDeleteWho gets #52? :)
Probably a Milford kid
ReplyDeleteWho else on here is tired of the Friend "Lap-Dawgs"????
ReplyDeletestill can't believe that it's a great idea to go with Milford and but was never acceptable to join sports teams with Friend.
ReplyDeleteSo how many of the Dorchester parents are going to moan and groan because their child isn't getting any playing time?
Pretty sure there won't be many players from Dorchester competing on that team.
There will be lots of little orange fish struggling for survival in the purple ocean of Milford sports teams. But there will lots more angry parents.
Good luck with that....Maybe Dorchester kids can be the student managers!
Enough with the negative comments blasting both Friend and Milford. Each town has it's good and bad points but we need to look at it for our kids' sakes. Maybe in two years our kids will start going back out for sports to support our own school. But if this is the "now" solution, so be it. But stop bashing other towns as our town has it problems too.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
ReplyDeleteLets start by cleaning house of those public employees taking our tax dollars on one hand, and bashing our own taxpayers and school on the other hand.
After reading some of the comments, I totally understand why some kids act the way they do and always find the negative in every situation. My child would love to be able to play sports with the Milford students because he/she would like to play with others who have a passion for sports. I'm not worried about Dorchester students not getting playing time just because they are from Dorchester. If a student is an athlete and has the ability, they will play.
ReplyDeleteTo all you so-called experts out there, have you ever compared the level of play in Class D-2 versus C-1? The speed of the game and talent level in those two classes are worlds apart.
ReplyDeleteIf you think your kid can't handle the competition I'm guessing you want to combine with Friend. That will set them up for a long life of false expectations. Its a competitive world out there, you kids may as well get used to it. Even if your boy doesnt start he will be a better football player if he has to compete. By his senior year he'll be kick butt and taking names instead of just moping around and going thru the motions.
Sports went downhill ever since Liesy left. If he was still here we wouldn't be in this mess.
ReplyDeleteWord on the (CRC) street is that Dorchester sports are "shutting down", and based on the constant fighting on this blog that may not be a bad thing.
