Candidates For Village Board, School Board Must File By Monday

As a reminder, this is an election year. In Dorchester, there are both village board seats and school board seats open. We are told by several sources that some incumbents have not filed for re-election and candidates are needed to fill the vacancies.

Individuals who currently do not hold any elected office have until Monday, March 1 to file. Nebraska's primary election is May 11. Candidate filing forms may be found here. Or for more information, contact the Saline County Clerk's office by calling (402) 821-2374.

For those who would like to make a difference in their town or school district, this is a great opportunity. We urge all interested individuals to consider serving the public and their community by running for a local office.

  1. These dates are for the primary. Voting for the Village Board will most likely in the general election so incumbants have until July 15th and new people have until August 1st. I think the school board might be the same way but I am not sure.

  2. Lyle:

If that is the case, we stand corrected.

We took our information from a news release from the Secretary of State's office.

    Thank you for the correction.

All interested local candidates are urged to contact the Saline County Clerk's office as soon as possible.

  7. who's going to pay for paving ?? You might want to get a few more jobs so you can pay your taxes when that passes!!

  8. Your taxes for paving are not going to cost you what you think they are. Example: The town of Cook had great opposition for years on paving their town and FINALLY they just went ahead and did it. Now EVERYONE is so glad they did. One guy there said that his taxes went up $10.00 a month. I dont think that is outrageous.

  9. Anonymous 10:35: I expect the owners of property that abut the newly paved street to pay for it. It's called a street improvement district.

  10. There are many factors that enter into the cost to the property owner with the creation of a paving district. With interest rates at an all time low, now may be the time to negotiate deferred interest rates on payments. You would also have to consider not only the project itself but a portion of contractor, engineer, bid proposal, material, bonding agent fees, publication costs, etc., would probably all get passed down and become the responsibility of the property owner and a part of your annual payment. A portion of this debt would also become general obligation. It is pretty hard to believe that $10.00 a month would cover your annual payment, especially if you have a corner lot, you will get hit up on both the front and the side of your property. It will take the great minds of our counsel to decide if they want to put this matter on the front burner. With rates currently being what they are, now may be the time for our Board to become proactive. Thank you.

  11. As of today, Dorchester had only one person file for the school board and Lyle is correct..the dates for the Primary were Feb. 15 and March 1. Because there were 6 or less filing, the dates to file for the General election are July 15 for imcumbents and Aug. 1 for other district patrons to file. Anyone interested should call the County Clerks office. I know that serving on the Village and School Board are often "thank less" positions but encourage anyone that cares about the future of our Village and our School District to think about about running.

I agree we need a female or two on the town board.

  14. I'm sorry, Anonymous and Republican Male Voter, but I'm confused. What does gender have to do with anything.

I would much rather see our village have an individual with competence.

We need to vote and support for individuals who are willing to invest the time necessary to get things done as well as an individual(s) who will take the necessary steps to find the resources that are available to fund village projects. We need to support those people who understand village budgets and who will put our tax dollars to the best use. I personally will vote for the individual(s) who has the know-how to make our village the best it can be.

I could not care less if that qualified individual is able to wear a dress.

In case your wondering, this comment is posted by a woman.
