Dorchester area groups that want help energizing their community can apply for grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Associated Press reports that the USDA is seeking applications for the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program, which is open to public bodies and nonprofits that want to finance small and emerging private businesses in rural areas. Grants may be used for technical assistance, acquisition of land, buildings and other things.
Grants are only eligible for projects that assist rural communities. Rural is defined as communities and cities with a population of 50,000 or less. The deadline to apply is March 31. For more information, go to www.rurdev.usda.gov/rbs/busp/rbeg.htm.

Can you just imagine how productive and progressive Dorchester would be if this posting had as many comments as the "What's on you mind" posting? I'm not sure people know exactly what their civic duty should be. Complain about pets and high school kids or find ways to improve the community as a whole - not just their little niche or neighborhood. To the Times - keep us up to date on how to apply for community assistance programs. Sooner or later our elected leaders will take action or hopefully leaders can rise from the general population to take the initiative.
