DHS Tips Off Tomorrow

Tomorrow marks the start of the DHS basketball season for both the girls and boys Longhorn teams, as Exeter-Milligan comes to town for the season opener.

The girls' contest is drawing considerable regional interest. Both the Lady Longhorns and Lady Timberwolves are ranked as contenders by the Lincoln Journal-Star, with Dorchester at No. 11 and Exeter-Milligan at No. 13.

The Lady Longhorns, guided by Coach Steve Fusco, are coming off an 11-8 record from last season. In its "team outlook" section, the Journal-Star reports that DHS "returns a good nucleus of four starters — Wendy Boller, Amy Havlat, Molly Pracheil and Karmen Lawver."

The Exeter-Milligan girls will give the Lady 'Horns a tough test right off the bat. The Timberwolves are coming off an impressive 17-5 record last season.

The boys' game also promises to be a solid match-up. The Longhorns are coming off a 8-11 season last year. Coach Scott Leisy is at the reigns for DHS. With only 12 players out this season, depth is a concern. However, "several players with varsity experience are returning and a winning season and deep post-season run are within reach," Leisy told the Journal-Star.

Exeter-Milligan is coming off an 11-10 record, with only one returning starter.

  1. I predict both the boys and girls teams are going to have very successful seasons. Good coaches + new gyms that allow practice for both teams right after school + determined athletes = winning attitudes and state appearances for both teams.

I'd put $10 on it if I was allowed to bet on high school sports.

  2. Does Dorchester have another sport during the winter months?

    I believe it is wrestling.

It is such a disgrace to the program, that the blog does not recognize these individuals and team as well as the basketball team.

The Dorchester team has a chance to have state qualifiers as well.

Lets get with the program and support all teams at the school.

As a parent of a wrestler, I feel my son has just as much right to some praise as the basketball teams.

  4. Yea!! Go wrestlers!!!! Wrestlers never get the respect they deserve. I agree, if the Times is going to showcase winter sports - showcase them all!!!
All of the teams could do well if the athletes remember motivation and effort is just as important in the classroom as it is on the court.

    We hear you.

However, in our defense, you will notice much of what we published in the basketball story was on the Journal Star's coverage and rankings of the DHS basketball teams.

The Times will welcome any reports or summaries from outside sources -- including parents who wish to submit photos and reports.

Last year, reader and wrestling parent Donna Parks did a fabulous job sending updates and photos on DHS wrestlers. (For the record, we were fair and balanced, thanks to Donna.)

We are not full-time or paid journalists. We don't make a dime of revenue from this effort. We're just a group of citizens maintaining a grassroots blog.

We get the feeling some of our readers have forgotten that fact.

We're not so proud that we won't take help if offered.

  6. Good for you Dweller. This is another point and case of people wanting something for nothing, expecting someone else to do the work and not pitch in themselves. In the time it takes to write a long complaint the person could have written a short report on his son's wrestling team. Maybe I'm making too big a deal of this but its indicative of what's happening in so many communities. Let someone else do the heavy lifting while i sit back and just b****!!! What don't they understand about the word "COMMMUNITY?" If you want to be a loner go live in the country and homeschool your kids.

  7. to anonymous,

YOu must be a basketball parent or have a son or daughter who plays or played basketball.

    what a comment.

Do all homeschool kids live in the country??

and I bet if you look at the stats, many of the home schooled kids are bright, smart individuals.

I wouldnt be mouthing homeschooled kids to much, when i see what comes from our public education system.

I bet the home school kids dont have an eighth period full of kids who cant cope with the public education system.

  9. I'd be fine with just basketball coverage.

I haven't ever really been too into wrestling. besides Dorchester has always been know for its basketball going back to the 30's and 40's.

    Go longhorns

  11. TO THE DORCHESTER TIMES:

I get on this site, every now and then, and I commend you for your news, and the stories, I guess everything you write. It's nice to have someone that put's much time and effort, in getting new stories, and the news out to everyone. Anyone that says this should be taken off, well I think you need to look at what this blog does for us and our town. I just wish that we could do something, or give a acknowlegdement to the people, who put so much time, in this great site. I commend you Dorchester Times. You do great work, and I look forward, to a great 2009, and the new stories for the months to come. Great job.

  12. Im tired of all the rivalry between wrestlers and basketball players. I happen to be a basketball player and i think the wrestlers are absolutely amazing athletes with outstanding work ethic. The acctual players dont bicker as much as you guys do. Both the basketball players and the wrestlers are DORCHESTER ATHLETES, as far as im concerned they play for the same team.

  13. I agree with the comments above. I remember in high school when there was a real division between those who wrestled and those who played basketball. Looking back I think the adults perpectuated that division more than the kids ever did.

Same thing applies today from what I can tell, as the parent of an athlete. It is the parents driving the division. Sad.

  14. To those of you who don't like the Dorchester Times or the people running it, I again urge you to quit reading this blog.

We already have a newspaper that serves Dorchester and all of Saline County. We don't need this Web site. Don't complain, just stop reading.

  15. To the writer above,

YOU ARE CRAZED AND OBSESSED! GET A LIFE.

If you have such a problem with this website, how about you quit logging on and reading it? Nutbag!

If you love the Crete News so much, you can check out their webpage which has not been updated in two months. Its pathetic and sad, just like you!!!
