Looking for something to do over this holiday break? Consider joining your friends at the Dorchester Fire Hall for some warm adult beverages.
According to Dorchester Volunteer Fire Dept. Secretary Bret Cerny, the DVFD will again be hosting a Tom & Jerry party on Sunday, Dec. 28. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. and continue until an unspecified time.
For more information about the DVFD Tom and Jerry party, call Bret Cerny or e-mail dvfd@diodecom.net.
According to our friends at Wikipedia, the Tom & Jerry -- now known as a traditional Christmas time cocktail -- was devised by British writer Pierce Egan in the 1820s. The egg nog-brandy-rum drink was made popular by the 19th century author's book "Life in London."
To publicize the book, Egan introduced a variation of eggnog by adding ½ fl. oz. of brandy, calling it a "Tom & Jerry." The additional fortification helped popularize the drink. To try Tom & Jerrys at your home this Christmas season, here is an easy-to-follow recipe:
Tom & Jerrys
1 oz. Dark Rum
1 oz. Brandy
1 Egg
1 tsp. Sugar
6 oz. Hot water milk, or coffee
Seperate egg in two bowls. Add Rum & Brandy to the yolk and beat together until frothy. In the other bowl, beat the egg white until it peaks then add sugar and beat until stiff. Fold into the liqour mixture. Pour into a coffee mug and top with the water, milk or coffee.
kinda funny,
ReplyDeleteits against the law to smoke in a public building, but yet we can serve alcohol and send people on their merry way.
Doesnt make much sense to me.

You can drink responsibly in public. You can't smoke in public without harming an innocent bystander's lungs.
ReplyDeleteGet over yourself. Prohibition failed 70 years ago.
The response to the "MADD member" by "90s grad" was rude and unnecessary. Especially during this time of year.
ReplyDeleteA note to all readers:
ReplyDeleteStay tuned for an upcoming post on the Dorchester Times revised criteria for reader comments.
Thank you.
to 90's grad
ReplyDeletelook at the stats and then tell my the affects of alcohol and driving.
it affects everyone
thanks

Let's all be grown-ups about this and just be responsible. It takes a lot of Tom & Jerrys to get tipsy. They aren't exactly Long Island Iced Teas, but that doesn't mean six or seven hours of drinking them wouldn't have some ugly effects.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the DVFD is doing this, although I'll be in church when the gathering gets underway. They probably wouldn't get much of a showing if they were serving hot cocoa or Hi-C.
To MADD, don't cause a stink that forces people to stay home. Sometimes you gotta trust adults.
At the same time I hope those attending the event don't give certain people an opportunity to get out their vintage soviet binauculars and scrutinize.

ReplyDeleteThats the kind of attitude and thinking that the MADD program is trying to get rid of.
Two ounces of alcohol is enough for the average person to become legally intoxicated.
The recipe for this has at least two one once shots in it...
do the math

I just wanted MADD member and 90s grad both that you are both right in a way. They have allowed people to leave the Tom & Jerry Party Drunk. It may take alot but there is also double or triple shots put into some Tom & Jerry drinks. There is also smoking that goes on at the party. These are not just hear say they are real things that have happened in years past. I don't want to dog on the fire department, But this needs to be said. I know of one person that comes every year to this event and donates lots of money. He is also one that brings a car load of people and should not be driving when he leaves.
ReplyDeleteI have attened DVFD's Tom and Jerry's for several years and there are quite a few people who show up to so show support for the Fire Dept and socialize with friends and drink Coffee. It is not a time to sit and get drunk but to see friends during the holiday season. To MADD, the good people on the fire dept would not let someone leave drunk and go out and drive. Maybe MADD member should come and see what Tom and Jerry's is all about before assuming the worst.
ReplyDeletestay home if you don't like it ................................. none of your business ............... or volunteer to be a fireman yourself and you can have a say next year ........... just dont call 911 the next time you need the firefighters or emt ..........

ReplyDeleteSo you are saying it is ok to drink and drive. Great way to get someone killed. That is the attitude that people have in Dorchester. Drinking is always ok. Who cares if they are underage or 90 years old. I can't tell you how many times I have see people leave the bars or leave a party in Dorchester and drive drunk. Did you really think before you made that comment? It just doesn't make since to me.
To cynical richard
ReplyDeleteit is my business. One lawsuit against the city and it will be broke.
Just look at what happened at the Fourth of July celebration a few years ago. Dodged a bullet there.
It is the city that will take the responsibility if someone does leave drunk and kills someone.
I agree with Phil Ward.
Maybe the new blood on the village board can get something done about this. Step up to the plate boys and show us what you got.

Please tell me the last drunk driving fatality in Dorchester or Saline County.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought.
It has happened, although it was 20-25 years ago (maybe longer as it is hard to keep track of time). A lady who was headed to her Blue River Lodge cabin had been partying in Crete, was intoxicated when she left and she was hit by a train at the crossing between Crete and the Blue River Lodge. She left several small children motherless.
ReplyDeleteGotta love the attitude.....
ReplyDeleteNever happened before, why should we worry.
All it takes is one.
Have a good day
Nice to see the "PC" crowd has hit "The Village" too!
ReplyDeleteRemember, "it takes a village" to keep everyone in line.
