Times' Ten Day Challenge: Support The DHS Booster Club

Can you spare $1 a day for the next ten days?

We challenge Dorchester residents, parents, alumni and friends of the community to make a $10 contribution to the DHS Booster Club by month's end. If the Booster Club receives more than $500 by Sept. 1, the Times will contribute an additional $50, above and beyond the contributions of our individual staff members. (UPDATE: 8/25, 10 a.m. -- Former DHS principal and teacher Terry Gautreaux has pledged to match the Times' $50 contribution if the $500 goal is reached.)

The DHS Booster Club is comprised of Dorchester supporters of all DHS sports teams who work to raise money for much-needed supplies, equipment, uniforms, and/or capital items beyond what the school budget can provide. Through such financial support, the Booster Club enriches DHS' extra curricular activities for both students and community members.

Your small donation will remind our Longhorn youth that we support their extra curricular efforts. Your contribution will remind DHS students it is a privilege and an honor to represent one's school and to wear its uniform. Your $10 contribution will remind all Dorchester youth that self-motivation, the desire to excel, good health habits, and interscholastic competition are critical to the overall educational experience.

Regardless of a student's athletic talents, the lessons on leadership and self-improvement learned through school activities last a lifetime. Just as true, a student will always recall the level of support shown by fellow community members during his/her school days.

Before Sept. 1, we hope you will take a moment to send your $10 (or more) contribution to:

DHS Booster Club

  3. I agree with this story because a strong showing will show the kids we care about their performances as athletes. I can handle ten bucks. (Please don't tell me I must be made of money. To the anonymous writer who always resorts to that remark, I think I know who you are anyway.)

  4. I can swing 10 dollars. Can I just drop it by at the school office?

  5. this promotion for donations is a good idea -- but people also need to remember that it takes volunteers to make this organization effectice and successful. This organization has been a big boost to the athletics over the years. Please say yes when someone asks you to help out.

  6. I would like to thank the Dorchester Times for the kind words regarding the Dorchester Booster Club, as well as its challenge to the Dorchester community. I would also like to thank anyone who has supported the Booster Club in the past or present. Your donation of time and money help benefit the youth of the community.
You may indeed leave your donation at the school office or give it to Lisa Wells, Booster Club secretary/treasurer, or Scott Pohl, Dorchester A.D. You may also make a donation this Friday evening at the football scrimmage. The Booster Club will have a table set up where you can donate and/or become an active member. We would love to have you join our group!
Thank you again to the Times and all Booster Club members for your loyal support of Longhorn activities!

  7. It would be nice if the community could raise 3 or 4 times that amount. Maybe the scrimmage will allow that to happen.

  8. How about a fund raiser for the booster club? How about a golf tournament to raise money? I know there is a alot of alumni that would come back for a golf tourney to help raise money for the school.

  9. I agree with the suggestion above. I also think that alot more money could be made during the alumni b-ball tourney in the spring. Bake sales or lunches/dinners served in the cafeteria could make lots of extra cash. Just an idea...
