Journal Star Features Dorchester

Today's Hometown section of Lincoln Journal Star features Dorchester as the community of the month in the newspaper's "Under 1,000" series. Journal Star reporter Cara Pesek and photographer Gwyneth Roberts do a fine job capturing the high points and current events of our town.

The story -- entitled "Something Old, Something New" -- spotlights several Dorchester residents and issues. Among the topics touched in the the article are the efforts of the Dorchester Area Community Association (DACA); the new school renovation; work being done at the Saline County Museum; Dorchester's business community; and our community's struggle to fill all the buildings on main street.

Also mentioned prominently is Dorchester's Charles Havlat, who was the country's last casualty in World War II's European Theatre.

The entire Journal Star article can be found online. However, the hard copy of today's Journal Star features 10 photographs of Dorchester residents and sites not found on its Web site. Residents are encouraged to get a copy of today's Jouranal Star, available at the vending machine at Mr. and Mrs. Roger Wolf's residence just west of the school on 9th Street.

Also featured in today's Journal Star is a short story on the Dorchester Times. It can be found here.

The staff Dorchester Times tip our hats to the Lincoln Journal Star -- not only for its Dorchester feature, but its efforts to spotlight Nebraska's small towns, which are all too often ignored by Lincoln and Omaha media.

  1. It's nice to see Dorchester get recognized. "Hayek and Olson both believe there’s a lot to be excited about here." I agree!

Interesting article. I have sent an email to the LJS webmaster asking that they please post the pictures of Dorchester. Also, does the Village Dweller have any opinion on the article that was published last Sunday by LJS regarding this blog?

Sorry, I stand corrected. The question should be do you have any opinion on the article that was published in TODAY'S LJS about this blog?

  4. We were quoted accurately, "DC".

That's all we can ask for.

John Mabry, LJS Managing Editor, sent an email stating that they are working on the picture problem. I will be home in June...I may have to take my own pictures!

  6. The article on Dorchester was good. The only thing it left out was our great 4th of July celebration and the current situation that threatens to do away with the event.

Has there been any progress in the talks on the fireworks celebration?

Could we turn the fundraising effort for fireworks in a bigger effort to also raise money for the volunteer fire department????

  8. I'd like to see a follow up that let's readers know other business/ways to spend time. The library, antique store, Klein Construction, BZ Construction, Tyser Reapir and Cars, what used to be Slepicka's, a nice church, and more that I'm missing. Let's attract more by sharing what we do have. There may be Walmart's all around but we do have a grocery store for the elderly.
    Go Dorchester!

  9. All small towns are defined by the attitude and qualities of the people living in them. A while ago the Dorchester Times ran a story on the difference between the INs and OUTs of a community. I'd like to see that run again on this blog, because I think the INs are finally being heard.

  10. still wondering if anyone is going to have a "meet the candidates" for the school board election?

its interesting that DACA is interested in the town board, but not the school board.

in a community our size, both are important and there are important issues that should be discussed. There seem to be as many problems at the school as there are in the community.

  11. Amused Observer:

It appears the Crete News and the Dorchester Times may need the services of a mediator! Here is an irony to ponder. One of the instructors with the Saline County “English as Second Language” program had to resign because she needed to care for her aged mother. The mother came to this country from what was formerly called Czechoslovakia in the 1930’s. She never learned to speak English; therefore, her daughter must serve as her interpreter and constant companion in her later years. My part Choctaw great-great grandmother would have called this the “Circle of Life” while my Czech grandmother would have said, “The more things change; the more they stay the same.”

  12. Amused, this post is about the Journal Star's story on Dorchester. It would be very nice if you wouldn't confuse the issues like you have confused legal and illegal immigration.

Anonymous, the post was about irony. Apparently, the Dorchester Times gets it and that's what counts. Thank you Village Dweller.

  14. I am very familiar with the state school aid formula. Sadly, the new formula just passed by the Legislature will give more taxpayer dollars to schools with large percentages of "English As A Second Language" learners. That means schools like Lexington, South Sioux City, Schuyler, Columbus and probably Crete will be getting more of your income and sales tax dollars, while more self-sufficient schools like Dorchester, Milford and Friend will be getting less. Welcome to the government's definition of fair play.

  15. To Anonymous regarding a Meet the School Board candidate forum. The DACA members made a decision to host "Meet the Village Board Candidates" because our organization works with the Village Board on events & projects. We have very little contact with the School Board outside of our personal interests. You're right that both are important but having 2 forums & still holding our regular monthly meeting would have made the night too long so we made a choice; however you are surely welcome to host such an event and if it is on a night I am able to attend I would do so.
