In April 2007, the Dorchester Times went online for the first time. Our mission was to fill the void of communication between our fellow residents.
Over the past three and a half years, the Times has broken news stories, published updates and notices, taken polls, addressed important community issues and -- most importantly -- encouraged area residents to start talking more often about their town and the quality of life here.
Tonight, we sign off -- at least for the time being.
To our loyal readers and commentators, we say thank you.
To those who may have disagreed with some of our posts and/or commentary, we say no hard feelings.
From Village Hall, to Dorchester Public School, to main street, to our organizations and volunteer groups, Dorchester is in very capable hands. We hope every member of our community chooses to play an active, positive role in making our town an even better place to live -- to improve the lives of their family members and their neighbors.
Long live Dorchester.

NOOOOOOOOO! I've lived outside the Saline County area for a number of years and to get regular updates on the area was greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteI don't know why the sudden shut-down, but I sure hope you reconsider!
Times,
ReplyDeleteWhy are you signing off now? You have so many loyal readers that come on your blog at least 2-3 times a day. I think the town may hurt without you. You have got people more interested in their town and more involved in their community almost more than ever before. I don't think the town would be where it is right now without you. I do hope you come back on soon. Good luck.
My appreciation to the Dorchester Times and their staff for 3 years of service. Your diligence in keeping your identity a secret only added to the post, as no one could point fingers, or accuse of favoritism. My hats are off to you for your service.
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible news...
ReplyDeleteI sure hope the times return, you have done a remarkable job, will miss the news articles, PLEASE COME BACK.
ReplyDeletePlease say it isn't so! Dorchester, its residents and friends, all need you, especially right now.
ReplyDeleteI can appreciate the time and energy spent on creating and maintaining the blog, but it's successfuly provided a forum for current issues facing our town. Thank you for that, but please consider continuing, with help more help if necessary.

Is this a late April Fools Joke? I moved away 20 plus years ago and LOVE checking in with the times 2-3 times a week just to see what's new. It's given me a sense of being home even when I am hundreds of miles away. Even if there are fewer posts, just an update or two a week is all we need. And what will Cynical Richard do for an outlet now?
ReplyDeletePlease reconsider!
I heard that Obama made the blog shut down because of its anti-immigration stance. I guess somebody that was upset with the Times for bringing the paving issue to light blew the whistle. Those Dems. just don't understand the meaning of the 1st amendment.
ReplyDeletemy life will go on ................. i will just spray paint my messages on peoples cattle in the pastures or feedlots ....................... and i will be running for office soon ....................... get ready world ................ here i come ........................
ReplyDeleteAh, last "post" but that does not mean the end of the site does it???
ReplyDeletePlease say you are not shutting down....
JR
Sad news.
ReplyDeleteNa na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, gooooood-bye (and good riddance!)
ReplyDeleteThe good news is there are six qualified candidates running for town board. Let's hope they carry on the mission and improvements advocated on this blog!
ReplyDeleteThe times idea was good. A little to slanted in its opinions, for my taste. They never let the truth get in the way of a good slant. Maybe someone will now have a site that reports the news instead of being bias. I'd love to see that!
ReplyDeleteKnew it wouldnt last forever
ReplyDeletegot your school, but not pavement
too tough.....not worth fighting for
I'll bet the comment above came from a big Obama fan. Have fun on this coming Election Day ...
ReplyDeleteI'll miss everything about you!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe that I still want you!
Don't let the Crete Guy win!
How will we keep up with Dick's thoughts and dreams. Oh ya! the cattle...in the feedlots.

Thank you for your years of service. I just got back from a short vacation and just found out about this news. I understand how much time updating and maintaining this blog site requires but I too hope the staff will reconsider. Agree or disagree, this site has been a positive thing for our small community. It has brought attention to many worthwhile causes. I've also learned how rude people can be when they don't have to sign their name....would like to thank all the people that stood behind their opinions by signing their name. Thank you again for sharing your talent and opinions. Best wishes to all of you that have participated on this blog.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this is really happening. Sucks!
ReplyDeleteI check this every week and will dearly miss it. It is the only way I have of keeping in touch with the town. It has done a lot of good for the community and needs to be continued.
ReplyDeleteJim Sehnert
When I first discovered this blog I was extremely excited that someone from home was willing to put the time and effort into keeping us all informed of what was out there affecting our community. I certainly can understand that the time it takes and the harsh criticisms that are given can wear one down. However, I am confused about the post offering your services to other communities and then just a few days later, calling it quits on this one. If it was the time involved that caused you to quit, then why the offer to do more? Whether I always agreed with the opinions of the writers or not, The Times has done more for this community than anything in the last 25 years or more. In doing so they have created a lot of loyal readers (and responders) I think the least the Times could offer is an explanation as to why it is necessary to quit.
ReplyDeleteI concur with Joyce Karl’s comment. This was a great website and I think that we all will dearly miss it! There were a lot of opinions posted…most were credible and some were just plain crap. There were way too many opinions from “Anonymous” and I would like to take my hat off to those who were brave enough to slap their name on what they had to say. A long time ago I made a comment concerning the old school and stated that there were a couple of worn out spots on the floor in the old gym due to my brother, Kelly, and my friend, Cory, completely whacking out and doing the ol’ Junior High side-to-side with their over weight lady friends to the song “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince. I would like to say that I was wrong by posting that statement………it wasn’t “Let’s Go Crazy” it was “Beat It” by Michael Jackson! HAHAHAHAHAHA WHAMMY!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry fellas…had to do it for the last posting of the Dorchester Times!
ReplyDeleteI am sad, have tears in my eyes. I grew up in Dorchester, have always been proud to call myself a Dorchester High Grad (some 50 years ago). I loved the Dorchester Times and will certainly miss it. I do understand the amount of work that it took to keep it going. I would gladly pay a fee to keep it going. It takes me back to my childhood and I will miss it very much.
ReplyDeleteGhost (Aug. 16):
ReplyDeleteWe will indeed provide our services to other communities interested in starting a blog similar to the Times, but only for a healthy fee.
We always provided our time and efforts to the Times and Dorchester free of charge.
The post from Anonymous (August 17-1:34 PM) is heartbreaking. You sound close to my mother’s
ReplyDeleteage(72). The “Times” resonates with older graduates who no longer have family in the area. Often because their parents have died and the old “homestead” has been sold. It makes you wonder, “Do I really have a home?” Yes, I may have lived away for over 50 years, but do people care about me here the way they would in Dorchester? When you read this blog and see the fundraisers held for someone who is ill, you realize the answer is “NO.
I miss the Times! COME BACK! :-*
ReplyDeleteNebraska athletic director Tom Osborne has announced a new fundraising partnership between the athletic department and the state’s farmers.
ReplyDeleteIt’s called Cornhusker Co-Op. In announcing the partnership, Osborne said, “There’s a healthy respect for what athletes and farmers are required to do every year to be successful.”
Grain elevators in Aurora, Dorchester and other towns are making agreements with the athletic department that will let farmers contribute a portion of their crop proceeds to the department.

COME BACK DORCHESTER TIMES, COME BACK PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteI am very sad. This is a very important useful tool for Dorchester area people. Thank you for doing this for 3 1/2 yrs. Hope you return.
ReplyDeleteLove this News site. Please do not shut down. It keeps me in touch with the friends.
ReplyDeleteHELLOOOO....oooo...ooo..oo.o
