News Update: DVFD Open House & Roast This Saturday

  • DVFD Open House On July 26: All Dorchester area residents and vistitors are invited to the Dorchester Fire & Rescue Dept. open house this Saturday, July 26. The DVFD members will be roasting a hog for the event. The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Dorchester Fire Hall. Take a few minutes from your day and say thanks to our volunteer first responders!

  • Husker Tire Owners To Merge With Dorchester's Farmers Co-op?: According to the Seward County Independent, Seward's Nebraska Tire closed its doors for good July 17. Terry Samuelson, interim manager for Countryside Cooperative -- parent company for Nebraska Tire -- said the corporate entity is "looking to merge with the Farmers Cooperative in Dorchester, though nothing is final." We at the Times wonder what, if anything, such a merger might mean for Dorchester area residents?

  • DHS Featured In Rivals.com: In less than 45 days, the Dorchester Longhorns football team will kick off another season. In an article titled "Big Bruha-ha Building at Dorchester," the renowned sports publication Rivals.com recently previewed the 2008 Longhorns. Huskerland Prep reporter Bob Jensen writes: "With all their skill players back, including an outstanding quarterback, the Dorchester Longhorns need only to develop a line to make some noise in its district race. Co-head coaches Ryan Voelker and Brent Zoubek led the team to the playoffs in 2006 and after a 3-5 season in 2007 look for a rebound next fall, saying the team will strive to maximize its potential, knowing that good things will come if that's the case." The Dorchester Times is predicting a 6-2 regular season for the Longhorns this season. The first game is a home contest against Shelby on Sept. 5.

  1. Interesting tidbit about Husker Tire. I remember when Terry Samuelson managed the Wilber Co-op.

  2. I haven't been able to find this article on Bruha. Not to take anything away from Bruha but maybe they should be talking about Jensen too. Look at what happened to the Dorchester team after Jensen was injured last year. Seeing him this year he looks bigger and stronger than last year. He must have put some time in at the weight room again this year.

  3. I'll take Zoubek and Voelker over Bo Pelini any day!!!!! DHS had better get an offensive line this year though. We need more guys to go out for football ... what's happened to DHS? When I was in high school we had 40 guys on the team every year. The school enrollment is about the same in my school days. Some of these kids today must be more worried about playing "guitar hero" or watching the crap that's on tv. We need a change in the culture at DHS. That football camp the coaches are holding this week is a good start. Parents, turn your kids into productive members of the community, not couch potatoes. If there's no daddy around, turn them onto something positive like sports!!!

  5. Two comments for you.

    1. My thanks to the firefighters. They do a great job. Had it not been for them Dorchester wouldn't have had fireworks this year.

    2. I find myself agreeing with CJs comments above. Why arent more kids getting involved in sports? I see lots of kids unsupervised downtown and they would be much better in a team environment that sports or other group activities could provide.

  6. I have to agree with CJ and Anonymous #2.

The slide from participating in sports has been going for many years. Are the kids more lazy or do the parents care less than in the past? These kids need to join organizations and parents need to encourage their participation. Sure, everyone is busy, but find time for your kids - get involved!

I know kids don't like to be forced to do things but they gain so much! For example, look at McCool Junction. Every student has to be involved in some sort of non-academic activity -- sure it takes coordination and time to offer more types of activities but those kids are thriving and successful. And that district continues to grow!

Dorchester would do good to take a few lessons from McCool. Over the years, McCool has lead the pack in school and community pride. It's not just the parents and grandparents that go to the game...support your hometown team!!!

  7. I don't notice the problem with female students.

Actually, I think the females at DHS are mostly leaders and more focused.

All it takes is one or two students in each class to change the culture of an entire school. Bring back the days of the Orange and Black attack!

  8. Congrats to Mr. Bruha...it's nice to see his name added to the distinguished list of quality Dorchester Longhorn quarterbacks.

  9. Take it from an old timer ----- don't let envy or jealously divide your team. Win as a team, lose as a team. COACHES ------- be sure to smoke those boys in 2-adays! That is the only way to make them see the team aspect. They need to realize that football is like going to war together ------- you only live to see another day if your buddy makes it also.
