EDITORIAL: Fremont Voters Do The Job The Feds Won't

On Monday, the voters of Fremont overwhelmingly approved a new ordinance to crack down on illegal immigration. By nearly a 60%-40% margin, Fremont residents enacted new code to prohibit the hiring of illegal aliens and to make it a crime to rent housing to such individuals.

The mainstream media and some civil liberty groups see this move as highly controversial. They need to consult Webster's Dictionary and read the definition of "illegal."

The voters of Fremont sent a strong message by proving real change happens at the local level, not DC. Moreover, they showed they are willing to do the job that the federal government won't; that is, enforce existing immigration law. In short, Fremont demonstrated intestinal fortitude, especially considering the threat of costly, baseless lawsuits from left-leaning organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a group that has devolved into the country's most anti-American organization -- all in the name of finding more work for its liberal lawyers.

We have heard from at least one candidate for Dorchester village board that our community should consider a measure similar to that of Fremont's. We agree. Dorchester residents should have the opportunity to vote on such a proposal, especially considering the challenges now facing nearby Crete.

As President Obama often says, make no mistake: immigrants continue to add great value to the fabric of our nation. Any low brow can repeat the line that we are a nation of immigrants. The questions that must be asked to critics of the Fremont ordinance and Arizona law are: What is your agenda? Why do you want our government officials to ignore our laws and borders?

Common sense says the United States can neither afford nor accommodate all of the third world's impoverished and unskilled. Over the past decade, illegal immigrants have drained our taxpayer resources, taken American jobs, added to the welfare rolls, stressed our education system, sent most their wages back to their homelands, and reversed America's melting pot by refusing to assimilate.

Fremont voters did the right thing yesterday. Bring on the lawsuits.

  1. That 2nd pic is so inappropriate and you should all hang your heads in shame for posting it.

I hope you all die in a terrible wreck and illegal immigrants buy your homes.

  5. To Anonymous June 22, 3:29 pm -- Where do I go back to if I was born in the U.S.? Also, I find it funny that you call the right wing Nazis, yet your fellow Lib up top is the one that is wanting someone to die...and of course you want to "DEACTIVATE" something on the internet...just like Big Sis Napolitano. Yay censorship! (insert sarcasm here)

  6. Let me see, NAZI's shut down all opposition, and NAZI's killed their opposition.

So I guess those two socialists who want those of us that want the law to be followed, to die, and want to shut down this site are the NAZI's. Well, maybe that is not fair, maybe they are Stalinist's, because they are obviously not nationalists.

So while I am upholding the 1st Amendment, and encourage this site to keep up the good work, would those of you that do not believe in free speech, or a free press just leave the rest of us alone???

And you wonder why we worry about our future, and the future of our grandkids. Since I am not a coward who hides behind "anonymous" you can find me in the white pages.

Every city in Nebraska should do the same thing as Fremont. God bless and keep them! And to those criminals who are here illegally, go back home, and come here the right way, and you will be welcomed with open arms!

  7. Both the U.S. and Mexico passed trade agreements that benefited the rich and literally made slaves of the poor. The two countries cut a deal that removes the tariffs protecting the Mexican corn farmer. Now there is no competition. That is exactly what happened in Mexico in 1994. Our Congress passed NAFTA, an unfair trade agreement that removed the protective tariffs from the Mexican corn farmer. U.S. Wall Street Agribusinesses came in and literally put 2 million Mexican corn farmers out of business and with them all the other smaller economies that depended on the corn farmers for their own prosperity. These people did what displaced people all over the world do. They migrated. This is why the USA went from a stable population of illegal immigrants to an estimated 12 million today.

  8. Bring on the lawsuits...bring on the lawyers and bring on lots of tax dollars.

After a long legal battle, this law will be struck down.

It's an expensive waste of time.

  11. To the reader who left the comments about NAFTA, I agree with you 100%. Those of us who opposed NAFTA back in the 90s predicted this wave of illegal immigration, and it happened. Now towns like Crete, once happy working-class communities, look like the slums of Tijuana. But hey, our meat sure is cheap.

By the way, Bill Clinton signed NAFTA.

John Lennon was right when he said there should be no religion and no national borders. We are all one. What's mine should be yours and vice versa.

  14. If you are going to consider yourself a legitimate news or even opinion source, you should show a little more class than posting that photo at the bottom. No one is going to take bigotry and racism like this seriously. I don't disagree (completely) with what Fremont did but convince with facts and good arguments, not hateful "jokes". You SHOULD be ashamed, and we expect more out of this blog.

  16. Actually, the Fremont law is what should be done if one is sincere in trying to combat illegal immigration. The only thing that the Times has wrong is their choice of picture.

It should be of the crying faces of the Nebraska citizens who chose to rent their houses to illegal immigrants and the faces of the business owners (usually good old legal U.S. citizens) who chose to turn a blind eye to the illegal immigrants that they choose to hire.

I will promise you that if Farmland industries knew that if they would have to shut down for a full year if even one illegal alien was hired, the demographics of Crete would change almost immediately.

The Fremont law targets the real criminals...those who chose to profit off of illegal immigration...that is, U.S. citizens who knowingly rent to and employ the illegal immigrants. If the laws are stiff enough and enforced uniformly for these profiteers, then the problem with illegal immigrants would go away.

Unfortunately, I have little faith in our system to adequately punish the real criminals; again, the U.S. citizens who continue to ignore the laws of their country to profit off of the less fortunate (i.e., these illegal immigrants, most who are truly just trying to fend for their families).

So, in short, the Fremont law is correct, but it won't stand as it flies in the face of the wealthy in this country who continue to reap immense profits from exploiting illegal immigration.

  17. Just a Lincoln reader who has to weigh in. I say the Times doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as the non-thinking, politically correct libs who don't even know what they stand for other than they hate traditional America. Go Times Go.

In a tongue-in-cheek call for immigration reform, farm workers are teaming up with comedian Stephen Colbert to challenge unemployed Americans: Come on, take our jobs.

Farm workers are tired of being blamed by politicians and anti-immigrant activists for taking work that should go to Americans and dragging down the economy, said Arturo Rodriguez, the president of the United Farm Workers of America.

So the group is encouraging the unemployed -- and any Washington pundits or anti-immigrant activists who want to join them -- to apply for the some of thousands of agricultural jobs being posted with state agencies as harvest season begins.

All applicants need to do is fill out an online form under the banner "I want to be a farm worker" at www.takeourjobs.org, and experienced field hands will train them and connect them to farms.

California's agriculture industry launched a similar campaign in
1998,hoping to recruit welfare recipients and unemployed workers to work on farms. Three people showed up.

  20. It's time to build the border wall.

    Build it tall and wide.

It's time to kick the illegals out.

Keep 'em on the other side.

And when we have our country back.

    Let's implement step two.

Let's gather up the crazy libs.

And send them all over, too.

  21. THOSE THAT OWN THE GOLD MAKE THE RULES...You can bet your --- that the owners of the gold in our greedy world would love to reduce America's middle class to the same level of living that the world's 3rd world enjoy. Why you ask? So that they may have even more money and more power. These "wealthy" world citizens are not concerned about nationalism. They own the leadership of nations, or their "interest groups" do. Why else would a government continue to go against the will of the people. Great news for the communist/socialist movements, of which our current government is party, who are the benefactors of the abuse of the gready few. Great choices both for the middle huh!

The only chance we have is for local and state governments to continue to stand up and unmask those who are in collusion. In the meantime we'd better get campaign finance reform (limits and no outside contributions), and a third party led by a "real middle-class american". It's going to take a word of mouth movement and no dependence on the media who are also bought and paid for.

Keep saying like it is, and turn off the popular media!

  23. I have relatives that live in Arizona. They send me pictures of what some of the public parks we have visited look like after the illegals cross the border. They look like land fills.
It is a crime. They can come here legally and learn the language like the early settlers did. I love all people. We do need to stop the " come on and take a free ride " from continuing we can't afford it. Who will go clean up the desert parks in Arizona some of the anonymous people complaining about a picture.
I could send you some pictures of distruction, looks just as sad as the oil spill.

  24. ILLEGAL!! There seems to be some who don't understand the meaning of the word. ILLEGAL means that the person is commiting an act that is against the law. So why do you want to protect them? Do you want to protect others who habitually break the laws of the land? Drunk drivers, robbers, those who litter, tax evaders, drug dealers, they are all involved in illegal activities.
Enforce the law. If it is ILLEGAL it should not be tolerated.

Are we ready to take in criminals from all other countries and let them continue their criminal activities here??? What is a criminal? isn't it one who breaks the law? Yes they are criminals. We should not be protecting them or standing up for them. All criminal activity should be dealth with according to the law.
If we allow people to pick and choose the laws they want to obey we might as well forget all law and live in anarchy.

  25. If Americans are paid real wages they'll do the jobs. But the government would rather collect the taxes from the middle and give out bread and circus (comes in handy during elections). Let's face it the only people who are profiting from our global economy are those who live in the glob and are not loyal to any country. All of you who are supportive of illegals are either mentally ill, are profiting, or are too stupid to know when your American dream has been Cashed in and liquidated. But we will all understand sooner or later as we who live here legally continue to absorb the costs of this government sponsored relocation of workers and political supporters.

  27. Anonymous 10:16, so we are to deduce that nafta, and the removal of corn tariff's in Mexico led to displaced workers from Mexico and big profits for us agribusiness. If so, Great move for the north American commodities brokers. What happens to our farmers when they pull the rug out from under them?

  28. For the record civil servants also have constitutional rights, even though some would like them to withhold their input. Many whistleblowers have been civil servants. That being said civil servants may be restricted legally and ethically if the topic is within their scope of influence, such as a policemen commenting publicly about a matter their department dealt with directly. That also doesn't mean they won't " pay for their comments indirectly, but they have constitutional rights

  30. I don't mind if people of different nationalities are in America.. everyone has migrated here.. but I just do not see why people can not become LEGAL.. results in less problems, unifies us together, and makes others happy.. I believe many Hispanics create their own discrimination because 75% of the population is illegal, my ancestors became legal when coming to this country over 50 years ago, so everyone should become legal.
