Dorchester Students Hold Election

Election Day is still five days away, but the students of Dorchester have already cast their votes and made their voices heard at the ballot box.

Yesterday, Oct. 29, the students of Dorchester Middle School and High School held their mock election. The event even drew news cameras from KLKN-TV, Channel 8 in Lincoln, according to David Kampmann, high school social studies teacher.

So which candidates won the Dorchester student vote? Here they are, according to the office sought:
  • President: John McCain
  • U.S. Senate: Mike Johanns
  • House of Representatives: Adrian Smith
In a special ballot question, the students of Dorchester voted against allowing Internet voting.

In less than a week, the students of Dorchester will know the political leanings of their fellow Nebraskans and Americans.

  1. I believe we know who will win the presidential primary in Nebraska. (No surprise there!) However, I liked the winner of the Dorchester Times poll better!

  2. Looks like the parents of Dorchester are teaching their children well. At least their voting for socialists instead of Marxists.

  4. Interesting election. Are the students aware their presidential candidate would like to eliminate subsidies for ethanol and move to a market-driven agricultural policy, thereby, reducing crop subsidies? An agricultural policy without subsidies would create a free-market rather than the current quasi-socialist market.

  5. Is OBSERVER aware his/her candidate, the Marxist Obama, would take more money from the hard workers in this country and give it to others who work 20 hours a week or less?

How can the Marxist, big-earred one promise to give 95% of the people of federal income tax cut when only 60% of us pay income taxes? Vote McCain, not because you like him (I don't), but to save the Union (I mean the U.S., not the Soviet Union, OBSERVER.).

  6. ZOGBY SATURDAY: Republican John McCain has pulled back within the margin of error... The three-day average holds steady, but McCain outpolled Obama 48% to 47% in Friday, one day, polling. He is beginning to cut into Obama's lead among independents, is now leading among blue collar voters, has strengthened his lead among investors and among men, and is walloping Obama among NASCAR voters. Joe the Plumber may get his license after all...

  7. I notice that there is no rebuttal offered regarding McCain's position on agriculture subsidies. Is this because we know that farm state legislators and lobbying groups would never permit Nebraska to lose 1 billion dollars in farm subsidies despite their contention that they want a free-market? This makes no sense. If you truly want pure capitalism, you will need to get off the federal teat. On a side note, when you reference the old Soviet Union, Nebraskans were more than happy to trade with them back in the 70's. In those days, the farm economy was booming due to grain contracts negotiated by the Nixon administration.

  8. Good to hear the students are getting involved and learning about the issues; they're also voting correctly. :)

  9. Gosh Bob,
You must be making a lot of money if Obama's plan is going to affect you and all your hard working brethren. Maybe you and your hardworking friends could pay to pave the streets yourself since you all must be making over a 1/4 million (where Obama's proposed tax increase would kick in). With your high incomes, I'm sure that you could finance the whole street paving process without forcing other taxpayers, like myself, to fund your quest. Isn't that kind of a Marxist idea, making all contribute to what you desire?

If you have such a strong dislike for a candidate, please state something other than the crap that you hear on the T.V. ads, which is generally half truths at best (this is true for BOTH parties). For example, doesn't it seem kind of hard to support a candidate who clearly is either limited in intelligence, has a poor work ethic, or has no appreciation for education? He finished 884 out of 889 in his class at the Naval Academy (FACT). Shouldn't we expect more from our president? Hasn't our last experience with a guy who was entirely common with regard to his education taught you anything? Thank goodness that Obama is going to win the overall election comfortably, as most polls have him well ahead in the states where the election is going to be decided.

Also, why are we so "proud" that a majority of students are simply voting a certain way? Shouldn't we actually be proud of achievements? I didn't know that just casting a vote qualifies as a major achievement since it is a right that all citizens are given. Accomplishments where hard work is involved is what makes me proud of the students in Dorchester. Not wheather they agree with me or not politically.

  10. Anonymous, you're wrong -- again. Allow me to flush the toilet because your arrogance & Obama-elitism are stinking up the place.

Obama's tax plan would kick in at $120,000 according to the campaigns latest talking points made by Gov. Bill Richardson. This comes after the $150,000 threshold quoted by Biden last week. Maybe the socialists don't have a clue, since Nancy Pelosi and Dirty Harry Reid will be running the show from Congress.

I'm going to have as much fun in the next four years as YOUR side has had trashing this country and running down our president over the last eight.

  11. I'm on Bob's side.If Obama becomes president I will bash him every day. That is if he doesn't take away my freedom of speech. He threw off reporters from Dallas,New York Post, and washington D.C because their papers endorsed John MsCain. We should get rid of Nancy Pelosi,Harry Reid,Barney Frank,And Chris Dodd for what they have done to this country in two years. How they will destroy America in the next four years. They destroyed Freddie Mac and Fanny May with de-regulating the mortage industry with sub-prime loans,so home equity has dropped $12 trillion dollars the last two years.

  14. Lincoln Reader,
Tell us why limiting the speech of anyone is good for our country... especially right wing radio which is paid for by private coffers, unlike National Public Radio which is government subsidized and passed off as impartial and unbiased.

What we need is to produce citizens who can think for themselves, so they can think about this pathetic charade we call politics, where two parties (both controlled by the rich, who have recently sold us down the river)pretend to be working for the best interests of the common man. Limiting their information is exactly what we don't need. What we need are more intelligent people producing more accurate information, and perhaps engaging in this political process.

WE DO NOT NEED TO LIMIT ANYONE'S SPEECH BECAUSE YOU THINK THEY HAVE AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. THE LIBS HAVE TRIED TO COUNTER ON THE RADIO, BUT PEOPLE WON'T LISTEN TO THEIR DRIVEL EITHER. I guess watching it every night on the big three and CNN is enough. Learn to think for yourself, and you won't feel inclined to silence anyone.

  15. How sad that in America we are able to even consider voting for a man that may not even be an American citizen. He has not yet produced a birth cert. and keeps brushing it off. It has just been reported that his aunt is living in this country illegally and in public housing!!! How could we have come this far that his name can even be put on the ballot... And what about our second ammendment right to have and bare arms. If Obama and Biden have their way hunting and trap shooting could all be a thing of the past. How can we even consider putting a man in the White House that has way more experiance in campaining for president than he has hours of serving our country ?!?!?! I guess people these days don't really care, they are willing to let the T.V and newspapers make their minds up for them... What a sad, sad day for America if Obama gets elected ! ! !

  16. Saline County needs a conservative coalition.

  17. You already have a conservative coalition.....it's called the entire state of Nebraska. Even Saline County Democrats are moderate compared to those on the coasts.

  19. Bob, Bob, Bob,
You are just full of misinformation. Here is the link to Obama's proposed tax plan (like it really is going to be put in place) http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/taxes/Factsheet_Tax_Plan_FINAL.pdf

Read it for yourself, don't believe someone's "talking points." Don't let others think for you, it is easy to read for yourself. It is quite clear that $250,000 is the threshold point - BTW McCain doesn't even dispute that. So actually, I think it is you who are wrong again - oh well.

And elitism? Actually it is McCain who wishes to give the ultra wealthy tax breaks - FACT - he doesn't deny it. So Bob, you must really think that people earning over 10 million really are suffering from over taxation.

No Winger - I'm also a No Winger - that doesn't mean by voting for one candidate changes that. I do agree with you on your free speech argument and also that BOTH parties are full of crap. Furthermore, many radio stations are owned by private individuals, and requiring them to present certain programming really is an afront to what this country is supposed to stand for. In addition, if a person doesn't like what they are listening to on the radio the solution is pretty simple - change the channel or turn it off.

No Winger - it is good to see another person on this site who does see through the bs that is feed to us by both parties. Really quick example - "wall street bailout" quickly was repackaged as "main street bailout", thus using scare tactics to convince the average person that they better jump on board and support this handout to the wealthy (BOTH parties wanted this bailout for their friends). The reality is that to be elected to congress you must be very wealthy or have very wealthy friends - advertising is expensive. Thus, our congress people tend to take care of themselves and their friends. In fact, I would venture to guess that most congress people (BOTH parties) have no close friends that are even in the middle class income range.

  20. Anonymous, Anonymous, Anonymous,

You need to find a new religion, 'cause your Obama boy isn't the god you're looking for.

And he is still a socialist.

  21. This is why I want to get out of here...I'll go to college somewhere where people do their research instead of running their mouths about crap that they don't even know about. Try looking at more than one UNBIASED website. Then you might get the right information. Oh well, it don't matter now anyway. Obama's president elect and you might as well suck it up, cuz there ain't nothin a bunch of farmers from Dorchester Nebraska can do to change it. And I resent bob's comment that the parents of Dorchester are teaching their children well. To me that sounds like a Racist comment. All that's being taught here is white elitism, which is a horrible thing. Every person on this earth has the right to equal treatment, yet throughout history, those that weren't white were looked down upon. Remember, history repeats itself. If we're not careful, we'll create another Hitler, and this time he/she may target those you love.

Observer: I did NOT follow the elitist trend. I voted Obama, and I am proud of it.
