Nov. 4 Election Results Are In

(UPDATED: 10:30 p.m., 11/4) -- According to the Saline County Election Clerk's unofficial results, Lyle Weber (104 votes) and Brandon Koll (84 votes) are the newest members of the Dorchester Village Board. Only two votes separated Koll and third-place finisher/incumbent Alan Slepicka (82 votes), who was followed closely in the tally by incumbent Dean Pracheil (78 votes). Ron Kahle (329 votes), Lindsey Zoubek (281 votes) and Bill Boller (210 votes) have been elected to four-year terms on the Dorchester Board of Education. Only seven votes separated Boller and fourth-place finisher Lisa Wells. (Provisional ballots -- those cast by voters who have had recent, unreported changes of address -- have not yet been counted.) Based on exit poll interviews and discussions with Dorchester voters throughout the day, we at the Times had estimated the following local candidates have won their respective races at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening:

Village Board
  • Lyle Weber
  • Brandon Koll

School Board

  • Lindsey Zoubek
  • Ron Kahle
  • Bill Boller

We can confirm that more than 500 area residents cast votes today at Dorchester's Community Building, likely setting a record in voter turnout for Dorchester.

Statewide Races/Measures

  • U.S. Senate: Mike Johanns (R) defeated Scott Kleeb (D), 57%-40%.
  • U.S. Congress (NE-03): Rep. Adrian Smith (R) beat Jay Stoddard (D), 77%-23%.
  • State Affirmative Action Initiative: Affirmative action banned. 57% for the ban; 43% against.

Dorchester voted 257-217 for John McCain over Barack Obama, who won the presidency with 52% of the national vote.

Keep it up boys and we will all be broke.

  4. Congratulations to all who ran and to those who were elected. (I feel old as I went to school with Brandon's mother!) However, I am especially proud that Saline County was one of the few Nebraska counties to elect our next President. You even made MSNBC.

  5. Funny how the Crete News states that Kleeb won over Johanns

    ReplyDelete
  6. If the Crete News really ran that, which i doubt, they are the only news agency in the state that got that wrong.

Johanns was declared the winner 20 minutes after the polls closed.

As for Saline County's vote, after studying the numbers I see only Wilber and Crete voted for Obama. Every other voting precinct was convincingly in McCains camp.

My guess is the hispanic voters in crete are hoping Obama can get congress to go along with passing an amnesty bill for their illegal friends and family.

That's just a fact not partisan rhetoric. The presidency has changed, the country has not.

  7. I would say it's the old time Czech Democrats who voted for Obama. They still outnumber Hispanics in Saline County.

  8. Oh, you mean the old folks who go in the booth and just look for the D after the name instead of knowing the issues. That makes sense. That's reason to be proud.

  9. I realize that this comment is way off the subject, but I didn't know where else to post it. I was at school the other day. I had to us the east restroom and was appalled by the uncleanliness of it. There was toilet paper and other paper on the floor of the stall. The trash box in the stall hadn't been emptied for awhile. Back of the toilet and around the toilet hadn't been cleaned for sometime. The sinks, mirrors and floor were dirty. The hallway was none too clean either. The school year is less than 2 months old. I didn't see either of the custodians around. Why are there 2 custodians on the payroll at the same time of day? Something needs to be done NOW. Taxpayers, if you are at school, look around and see for yourself. I didn't vote for a 4 million bond to have the school looking like it is.

  12. To the people who seem to think that Saline County only voted democratic because of the hispanic population, you clearly have no concept of history. Saline has a very distinguished democratic voting record - in fact, I believe that the democratic candidate for President has carried Saline county more often in the past 60 years than any other county in the state. Hmm - I don't think there was much of hispanic base for most of those years.

  13. To anonymous number nine I have been in the school and see how the kids treat the new building no wonder the restrooms and hall is dirty do parents teach there kids anything anymore, I'm sure the custodians could be in there cleaning after each kid uses the restrooms and they would still need work.

  14. I was wondering did the school get any new equipment to help the custodians clean the building faster? when I was in the school I saw the same old mop buckets and stuff they had before. Maybe they should have used some of that 4 mil on something other than sports.

  15. $4 million on something other than sports? Dude, whatever you're smoking, I want some of that.

Keep hating your self-loathing self. Sad.

  16. "Oh, you mean the old folks who go in the booth and just look for the D after the name instead of knowing the issues."

That's it exactly. My parents are that way. If Osama Bin Laden was on the ballot with a (D) after his name, they'd vote for him!

And another thing....How do all these judges keep getting retained in office? Seems like everytime I talk to someone about it, they swear they vote "no" every time?

  17. Osama. Obama. What's the diff?

Did you see Saline Co. and Thurston Co. were the only two rural counties in Nebraska to vote for Obama? Thurston Co. is home to the state's only Indian reservation.

I guess that means Saline and Thurston Counties have one thing in common ... the majority of the voters in both counties went to the polls drunk.

  19. If I am not mistaken, Saline County has only voted Republican in the Presidential contest two times. Reagan's second term, and one of the "W" Bush terms. That was why Bobby Kennedy came to Saline County in the 1968 Nebraska Primary. (He brought John Glenn, and that is who I wanted to see) They helped dedicate the Czech Village.

I hate to disagree with "vested Czech" as I find him such an agreeable person, but Saline Counties Obama vote was overwhelmed by the rest of the Third Districts overwhelming vote for McCain. The Third District's Electoral Vote will go to John McCain.

I suppose this will bring up those people who want to do away with the Electoral College. But before you throw the baby out with the bathwater, remember that the President is the President of the Federal Union of States. The States elect the President, he is the President of the STATES in Federal Union. If we go to a direct popular vote, you have overthrown the Union, the Constitution, and done away with our 10th Amendment rights, and made Nebraska, and the other states nothing more than political subdivisions of a combined consortium, no longer the United States.

Our Founding Fathers were very wise, and knew how to protect our liberties. Let us not mess with their wise council, unless of course you want to be a slave to a mega-state.

As far as the Saline County Democrat ideology, I think I would be a Democrat if the Party still had a 19th Century Platform. It is conservative, and believes in the Founders principles. But somewhere along the line, the Democrats left the people and embraced more socialist ideology. I am not enamored with the "big government, big business" side of the Republican Party, but agree more with the conservative ideology in its base. Children seem to mirror their parents, and I think the following generations just kept voting Democrat down south of Turkey Creek. I am sure that MOST of my Bohemian ancestors were Democrats in the 19th Century, and I would have been as well. We need a true, unadulterated conservative party in this country. But I fear the idea of the Federal government being the answer for all things has grasped ahold and we are stuck!

That being said, we need to pray for our President elect. He is going to have a rough road to hoe, even if things go good.

  20. Yes, I took note that TWO American Indian reservations are located in Thurston County. (Omaha and Winnebago) I am 1/2 Czech and part Choctaw myself. I prefer to think that we are free-thinkers. However, I enjoy an occasional pivo. Cheers!

  21. This is hilarious,

What better to clean the school than a good old mop bucket. I dont think they make anything different. Add a little soap and elbow grease and it will get clean.

I can see it coming, next we will be hiring an additional custodian to help becasue the ones we have cant keep up with all the work, and that will cost the school an additional 20 grand.

Someone will say, have the kids do it, or have someone from the community volunteer.

    Just wait, its coming

The custodians do clean the restrooms each morning, noon and after school. It would be great if there could be a custodian all day just in the restrooms. Some of these children have no restroom etiquette. Is that the teachers job also? Hopefully, children already know how to use the restroom when they begin school. Maybe the parents can teach their children proper restroom etiquette (such as picking up a paper towel if they drop it) so not all the custodian time is spent cleaning the restrooms.

  23. My grandfather, a farmer, left the Democrat party after Carter. Big Reagan man, thank God.

I think he saw back then what the Democrats' big farm program was doing to small farmers like him, that is, enabling the large land owners to buy up the small guy. Some Republicans, esp. the Westerners, want to do away with the farm program altogether. We be better off (higher crop prices, more smaller farmers, etc) if the farm bill would have only provided emergency payments in times of disaster.

Water under the bridge, I suppose.

Thank you for the compliment, but Vested Czech is a she. The Bobby Kennedy visit to Wilber is a nice memory as I was also there. Only 7 years old, but already a political junkie. I agree that the Saline County vote was diluted by placing it in the Third District. This was done on purpose by Republicans in the Legislature. However, I think Saline County has more in common with the First District and is a step-child for the Third District.

I absolutely agree with you. The kids need to get some lessons from home. I'm sure they wouldn't be allowed to mess up their own bathrooms like they do at school. A huge lack of respect for public places exists. How do we fix that? Mom and dad need to set the example and be respectful as well.

  27. My sincere apologies to Vested Czech. I am glad I now know she is lady, which explains why "she" is so congenial! Thank you for the kind rebuff to my error!

I was almost 12 when RFK came to Wilber, I was aready conservative, and a political junky myself! I almost wet myself when I saw John Glenn, and stood so close to him. I dreamt of punching holes in the sky back then. I am also glad that I got to see and hear such a pivotal historic politician as RFK. Only a month later, he would be struck down by one of the first Islamic terrorists to hit US soil! A very sad day. And no way to settle political debate!

I remember standing near a cute little gal with bobbed brown hair. Could it have been............May 1968. : )

  29. How about we quit blaming the president, Democrats, Republicans or Wall St. for the financial mess we're in and (gasp!) look in the mirror.

How many 20-somethings and 30-somethings do you know who bought more home than they could afford? Did they sign the mortgage papers? You betcha.

How many families do you know who say they can't "keep up with the bills", but subscribe to cable TV, have landlines and cell phones, have internet service, more than one car, and buy imported junk at Wal-Mart they don't need?

We're a spoiled, spoiled society whose day of reckoning has come.

Get real.. for one you don't understand how hard these custodians work... Many times I see Adam walking back from the school later than he should be.. If you have issue go clean it yourself.. They can only do so much at a time. I really don't think that they school wants to pay them over time because they seem to be pretty tight the way it is.. Another thing maybe the teacher should watch over these kids. Okay here is an idea for you.. They could hire you as the custodian because you seem not to have a life and rather sit and gripe about how bad the toilets are. What does your bathroom look like..
