Arnold Bobolz Passes Away Nov. 10

Former Dorchester resident Arnold G. Bobolz, 89, died Nov. 10, 2010, in Lincoln. Mr. Bobolz was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Primghar, Iowa, to Gustav and Louise (Tomm) Bobolz. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. He was a member of the American Legion and served as district chaplain.

He was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Dorchester and was active in the church choir.

Survivors include his wife Jean Bobolz, Lincoln, formerly of Dorchester; sons and daughter-in-law Larry and Peg Blake, Ashland, Ore., and Lance Bobolz, Fort Worth, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law Peggy and Ken Krasser, Beaver Crossing, and Brenda and Dennis McKay, Avondale, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 15, 2010, at Christ United Methodist Church, Lincoln. Memorials may be made to the Dorchester United Methodist Church or the Dorchester American Legion.

Phony Cop Pulls Over Woman In Dorchester

Maybe Dorchester has a police officer in training.The Saline County Sheriff's Office says a phony police officer pulled over a woman near Dorchester and searched her vehicle. The Associated Press is reporting that the sheriff's office says the woman reported that she was pulled over on Nov. 5 while driving on U.S. Highway 6 near Nebraska Highway 33.

The woman, a student at Doane College, says the man was driving a dark vehicle that had a gold stripe on the side and an emergency light on the top. The man was wearing a black, police-style uniform. She told the sheriff's office that she agreed to let the "officer" search her vehicle, then he let her go. No arrest has been reported.

The Times has located yet another old picture of Dorchester's proud past. This photo offers Times readers yet another view of our main street (Washington Avenue) and its businesses as they appeared around 1900.

The picture featured here is on a postcard currently on auction at Ebay.com.

Our staff historians believe the focal point of the photo is Freidell's Grocery and Dry Goods Store and the Abe Martin Drug Store, or perhaps the Kenney Cafe.

The photo, shot by Russell Freidell, clearly show the upper-most structure of the buildings read "Ireland" -- likely an owner or architect. It is unknown when those portions were removed. Those who wish to view the postcard or bid on the item, currently priced at $12, may do so simply by clicking here.

Jensen, Karl Sent To Village Board; Pracheil Re-Elected

Election Day ushered in two new village board members, as voters decided to send newcomers Joyce Karl and Todd Jensen to Village Hall. Former board member Dean Pracheil was re-elected, beating fourth-place finisher Kevin Olson by six votes.

The results show that the electorate was hungry for a new direction, said several voters. Pro-paving supporters said the addition of Jensen and Karl could encourage current board members to take a more serious look at paving more Dorchester streets.

The new board will convene in January.

SPECIAL REPORT: Nov. 2 Election Will Determine Future Of Dorchester

Tomorrow, Nov. 2, is Election Day. Despite all the talk of the national races, there is also a lot at stake in tomorrow's Dorchester's Village Board election. In fact, the results of our local election could very well determine the progress and quality of life in Dorchester -- or lack thereof -- over the next decade.

The polls open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Six town residents are vying for three seats on the Dorchester Village Board.

Caroll Schnell
Joyce Karl
Todd Jensen
Dean Pracheil
Zech Williams

Sources tell the Times that at least three (Olson, Karl and Jensen) of the six challengers strongly want to consider paving more Dorchester streets and take a more aggressive policy on blighted properties in town. (Candidates should feel free to leave their position statements on the "comments" section of this this post.)

Tomorrow's elections could drastically shift the composition of the Village Board. Currently, two of the five board members staunchly oppose paving, while only one publicly supports it. The other two board members appear to be undecided. The addition of two or three pro-paving candidates will likely give the pro-paving supporters a decisive majority at Village Hall.

Earlier this year, the Times conducted a non-scientific online opinion poll that found that roughly 82% (out of 167 votes) of readers say they want to consider paving. Approximately 13% of readers would rather see more gravel applied to the town's roads. About 4% want nothing done. Only one vote per IP address was allowed.

The Times has also been told that tomorrow's elections could also impact the direction the town takes in working with the Farmers Cooperative (the town's largest employer), as well the hiring of village employees.

In April 2007, the Dorchester Times went online for the first time. Our mission was to fill the void of communication between our fellow residents.

Over the past three and a half years, the Times has broken news stories, published updates and notices, taken polls, addressed important community issues and -- most importantly -- encouraged area residents to start talking more often about their town and the quality of life here.

Tonight, we sign off -- at least for the time being.

Thieves Rob Dorchester Area Businesses

The Saline County Sheriff's Department tells the Dorchester Times that Sheriff Alan Moore's team is investigating two recent burglaries in the Dorchester area.

According to reports, unknown persons broke into Ben's Iron Grill during the early morning hours of Aug. 4 and removed an undisclosed amount of money and other miscellaneus items.

Also during the morning hours of Aug. 5, unknown persons broke into one of the Dorchester Farmers Cooperative buildings along Highway 33, east of town. The thieves took miscellaneous tools and equipment worth more than $21,000, according to an anonymous source.

Man Stabbed At Czech Days

Today's Beatrice Daily Sun includes a story of how an attempted vehicle theft escalated into a stabbing Saturday night during the Czech Festival in Wilber. Randy D. Perry, 24 of Peru was arrested Saturday night after allegedly stabbing Jeremy Samples, 30 of Hickman. Perry is charged with assault in the first degree, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace. See the story by clicking here.

Blogs like this are an excellent communication tool and information resource for smaller communities. Now the creators and editors of the Dorchester Times are offering their services to other area communities interested in creating websites similar to this blog.

Times staff will utilize Blogger.com to design the website according to the needs of community leaders, who will have the final say regarding the content.

Once website is completed and online, community leaders will be able to update the site themselves. Or, if preferred, Times editors will maintain the site with guidance from individuals in the communities being served.

Construction Boom Continues In Dorchester

In the past few years, Dorchester has experienced a construction boom -- a new shelter at the city park; a new school and campus renovation; a new snack shack and restrooms at Nerud Field; and several commercial building improvements.

This new activity signals positive developments for our community and our citizens' quality of life. Over the past couple of days, construction crews have been busy putting the finishing touches on the seventh additional silo at the Dorchester Farmers Cooperative elevator, the economic hub of our town.

According to sources, the silo represents more than $1 million in additional investment in our community.

That means more property tax revenue for the village (streets, sewer and other projects) and the school.

We applaud leaders at the Cooperative who continue to put Dorchester on the map in the agribusiness world.

Wilber Preparing For Czech Days 2010

Can you believe it? The first full weekend of August is here and area folks -- young and old -- are on thier way to the annual Wilber Czech Days Festival, one of Saline County's most noted and celebrated annual events.

Our readers in Wilber tell us that town officials have spent the past few days preparing for the 2010 National Czech Festival, which will be held today, Saturday and Sunday.

Every year at this time, the population of Wilber swells to as many as 50,000 as folks come from miles around to celebrate their own Czech ancestry or to pay tribute to some of the county's early pioneers. The community of 1,700 has been the Czech capital of Nebraska since 1963 and of the United States since 1987. The festival itself began in 1962.

This year, Czech Days activities will include a free dance at Hotel Wilber, Czech bingo, the accordion jamboree, a children's parade, an art show, dance contest, Czech dinners, museum tours, quilt show, Czech heritage demonstrations, and the sounds of various polka bands. The official Czech Days' parade starts at 2 p.m. on both August 7 and 8. The Miss Czech-Slovak U.S.A. Queen Pageant begins at 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the outdoor theatre.

Is Chester Getting The Boot From DPS?

Could Dorchester Public Schools soon be losing one of its most famous residents?

According to reports posted at the July "Open Forum" post on this website, school officials are currently in discussions about removing Chester, the mounted Longhorn head, from the school gymnasium. Our sources tell us Chester has hung on the north gym wall for nearly 20 years.

The anonymous commentator wrote: "I heard a rumor that the school is considering getting rid of Chester, the longhorn head that has been in the gym, (since it) is a liability hazard ... I was unable to attend the last school board meeting. Is this correct? (Chester) has been a long-time member of the school. What do students and alumni think of this?"

Early-Stage Tornado Over Dorchester Spotted On Radar

Tornado spawning activity last night over Dorchester has our community in the news once again. (Ironically, a severe windstorm causing much damage struck Dorchester one year ago today.)

At TheWeatherSpace.com, meteorologist Kevin Martin wrote late last night: "Interesting night we have here as supercells have formed in Nebraska and quickly have been going tornado warned. These cells came without a tornado watch from the Storm Prediction Center over at NOAA."

Martin wrote that several supercells formed in southern Nebraska. With the use of enhanced radar in 3D, Martin found the image of a funnel cloud or even tornado on the ground near Dorchester.

Mob Grazing, Organic Farm Tours Set For Dorchester Area

The Dorchester Times has learned that a University of Nebraska-Lincoln organic pasture walk featuring mob grazing and two organic farm tours will be offered in our area on Aug. 19 and Aug. 21.

The Aug. 19 pasture walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the Don and Pat Jirsa farm northwest of Dorchester (2040 Saltillo Rd). Don Jirsa will explain his pivot irrigated pasture and mob grazing system, while Terry Gompert, UNL Extension educator, will offer advice and answer questions about mob grazing, which is ultra-high stock-density grazing to ensure that nearly everything in a small area is either eaten or trampled, including weeds and less-palatable grasses. Manure also gets distributed very evenly and also is trampled into the soil, improving soil fertility.

The tour will move to the Welsch's West Blue Farm, at 146 County Rd. 1900 in Saline County, just a half mile south of the West Blue Church. Participants will be able to view a dryland mob grazing system that uses portable fencing and watering systems, and hear helpful suggestions from Crete Lumber and Farm Supply. Free lunch will be provided by the Welsch family followed by a tour of their organic ridge-tilled crops and alfalfa rotation.

The two organic crop and livestock tours will be Aug. 21 east of David City in Butler County. The first tour starts at 1:30 p.m. at the Larry Stanislav farm, 1.75 miles north of Abie. At 3 p.m. participants will move to the second tour at the Ostry Family Farm (2281 Spur 12B Rd.) a half-mile northeast of Bruno on Spur 12B. A free dinner will be provided by the Ostry family at 5 p.m. followed by Czech entertainment by the Ostry Family Singers.

DHS Volleyball Clinic Next Week, Open Gym Tonight

All area volleyball players in grades 7-12 are encouraged to take part in next week's Dorchester High School Volleyball Clinic at the school's main gym. The session will be held next Wednesday and Thursday, July 28-29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is provided.

Players will learn the fundamentals of volleyball and have lots of fun for $56 per player. This clinic is being conducted by former NU volleyball player Tonia Tauke, who has been coaching and teaching volleyball since graduating from UNL. Sports Roundup: National League Baseball Team Captures Championship

Dorhester National League Baseball Team Takes SFS Championship: Earlier this month, the Dorchester National League team (ages 13-15) earned the title of SFS League champions. A local resident familiar with the Dorchester baseball program told the Times it was the first time in two decades that the Dorchester National League has captured the SFS League title, but we were unable to confirm that information. In '70s and '80s, Dorchester was a perennial No. 1 or No. 2 team. This season, the Dorchester National League team won the regular season in the nine-team league. In tournament play, Dorchester beat Friend, 13-5, in second-round play. In the third round, Dorchester had to fight hard to defeat a scrappy Exeter team in extra innings, 7-6. In the championship game, Dorchester beat Wilber (black) by a final tally of 3-1. Congratulations to the Dorchester National League ballplayers and rising-star coaches Matt Carroll and Kurt Bleach!

Dorchester Co-Ed Team Wins Western Softball Tourney: The Times received two e-mails reporting that a Dorchester co-ed softball team took first place at the Western Old Settlers softball tournament on Saturday, July 17. The co-ed squad won the championship game 15-5 over the defending champions of the tournament, capturing a $300 prize. Congrats!

Ben's Iron Grill Gets Rave Reviews In Journal Star

Today's Lincoln Journal Star and its "Ground Zero" publication include a lengthy, flattering review of Ben's Iron Grill in Dorchester.

Reporter and food critic L. Kent Wolgamott writes: "Pull into Dorchester, drive north down main street, park in the middle of the wide boulevard and stroll into Ben's Iron Grill for some fine homemade fare delivered with small-town charm and small-town prices."

In the article, Wolgamott raves about the queen-cut prime rib, the St. Louis-style pork ribs, and the seafood linguine -- as well as the small-town prices. He adds: "The coleslaw and macaroni and cheese were both delicious and homemade, as is everything at Ben's. The entrees also include a trip to the large, well-stocked salad bar."

Wolgamott concludes by writing: "Ben's also is a full-service bar, complete with a jar of pickled eggs. It has flat-screen TVs, a beer/smoking garden, keno and pickle cards, and the bar has begun hosting bands and karaoke on some weekend nights. That combination could make for a fun evening. But it's well worth a trip to Dorchester just for the food. And don't worry about getting a ticket - you're supposed to park in the middle of the street."

Friend Shows Impressive Growth With New Business, Restoration

The York News-Times has profiled the new Pour House Tasting Room in Friend, one of of Saline County's most unique businesses and opened by Carey Potter, who has strong ties to Dorchester. The Pour House is under the historic Warren Opera House, which is currently being restored by the Friend Historical Society.

Potter's father is John, whose farm is near Dorchester. The tasting room features wine from the Potter vineyard. "It just made sense to open a tasting room at the same time," Potter said.

The York newspaper writes: "Housed in a historic building in downtown Friend, the Pour House calls a charming old hardware store its home. The dark wood and built-in shelves of the hardware store add character to the Pour House and give it a historic ambiance."

Potter has selected several Nebraska products to be featured in the Pour House, including five other Nebraska wines beside their own and Nebraska honey and vinegar. A local woodworker made the cutting boards on display in the Pour House, and a Nebraska company’s wine decor is also on the old hardware shelves. The local florist in Friend adds fresh flowers to the tables in the Pour House each night, giving it that something extra.

Potter "said the purpose is to accompany other businesses in town, not compete with them. ... What everyone wants is to simply bring people to Friend, and the Pour House is helping do that.

"We would like Friend to be a destination," Potter said. She would also like to see the attraction to Friend extend to other towns because she knows there are lots of great places to visit. "I would like to start a tourist trail of this area," she said.

Heeren, Palky Farms To Recieve Pioneer Family Honor

Two farms in our area have been designated to receive Nebraska's Pioneer Farm Family Awards. The Jim Heeren Farm and Palky Farms LP, both of rural Dorchester, will receive the award at the Saline County Fair.

To qualify, members of the same family must have owned a parcel of land consecutively for at least 100 years.

The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, the Nebraska Fair Managers Association and the Nebraska Farm Bureau are sponsors of the award.

The award was initiated 56 years ago. Each honoree receives a plaque and gatepost marker, presented during the 2010 fair in the county where the land is situated.

Top 10 DHS Football Teams Of All Time

(Updated, 7/13) Today, the Times ranks the best Dorchester High School football teams of all time.

Over the last several months, our staff surveyed several DHS fans and alumni -- including former players and student managers. We believe that we have accurately identified and ranked the top ten Longhorn teams to ever hit the gridiron. Beginning with the best DHS football team of all time, they are:

1.) 1971 (Undefeated and touted as the best Class D team in Nebraska by many sportswriters.)

2.) 1979 (Undefeated and touted as one the best Class C-2 teams in Nebraska by many.)

3.) 1977 (Ranked No. 7 in Class C-2 by the Lincoln Journal and No. 5 by the Omaha World-Herald at season's end. Pioneer Conference champs. "The hardest hitting team ever to wear the DHS uniform," one local expert said.)

Spencer Kotas Wins Carp Contest

The Times has learned that recent DHS graduate Spencer Kotas hauled in the heaviest carp as part of Ben's Iron Grill annual "Big Carp Contest" held July 4.

According to reports, it was rumored that Spencer's stepfather, Wayne Havlat, may have caught the five-pound monster of the deep in him farm pond, but Havlat would not comment on the potential scandal.

The Buzek brothers of Milligan came in a distant second place with a "two-pound sewer bass." Tom and his bother were proud of their catch, nonetheless, according to reports.

Spencer and Wayne have been invited to Ben's for a free meal.

Bible School, Potato Bake Planned At Dorchester UMC

The area community is invited to take part in two fun-filled events planned for next week at the Dorchester United Methodist Church (UMC). All area residents are encouraged to take part.

* Potato Bake & Sundaes: This Sunday, July 11, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Dorchester UMC Fellowship Hall, there will be a Camp Scholarship Fundraiser. Those attending will be treated to baked potatoes with 10 or more toppings, salads and sundaes with toppings. Free-will offering (sundaes are 50 cents).

* Vacation Bible School: This year's VBS theme is "A Cosmic Adventure Praising God!" Bible school begins on Monday, July 12, with registration (for all area children) from 5:45 p.m. - 6 p.m. Bible school will be conducted from 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. On Wednesday, July 14, there will be a short program for parents starting at 8:30 p.m. VBS activities will include singing, crafts, games and exciting Bible stories and lessons that will bring us closer to God. All are invited to attend.

Farmers Market At Saline Center Begins Sunday

Beginning this Sunday, July 11, the farmers market at Saline Center will get underway and be open every Sunday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Check out some of the locally grown goods and produce from the Saline County area. And here's the best part: No charge for vendors.

The Saline Center kitchen and bar will be open. The kitchen will operate 6-8:30 p.m.; the bar will close at 10 p.m. Food and drink specials will be offered every weekend.

Our Streets In July: Still Unacceptable!

Earlier this year, during the snow melt, Dorchester residents were up-in-arms about the conditions of their streets. Rightfully so. In March, we heard reports of cars getting stuck on heavily traveled corridors. That's unacceptable.

But opponents of paving promised things would get better with warmer weather and that our muddy roads would become a distant memory. They were wrong.

The Times has already given our ten good reasons to put the paving issue on the general election ballot. We strongly urge the village board to let the residents of Dorchester decide on the paving issue this fall. Even when presented with several other project choices, more than half (52%) of Times readers want paved streets more than any other town improvement, according to a recent Times poll.

But if words aren't enough, let pictures do the talking.

For those who didn't have the pleasure of driving on Dorchester streets this past holiday weekend, below is what residents and out-of-town guests had to contend with. Once again, cars were getting stuck on our village streets -- in July!

Dorchester Youth Football Camp, July 13 & 14

Ready or not, football season is just around the corner. Once again, the DHS coaching staff is offering young players in the Dorchester area a chance to learn the basics of the game.

On July 13 and 14, DHS football coaches Ryan Voelker and Brent Zoubek will hold the Dorchester Area Youth Football Camp for boys entering grades 3 through 8. The camp will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. both nights. Cost is $15 per player.

The camp will "introduce and reinforce some of the basic fundamentals of football and education of the game through the instruction, discipline and the fun and enjoyment the great game offers." Out-of-town boys are welcome, as well, to take advantage of this great learning opportunity.

Payment and entry form are due no later than the day of camp. Participants will receive a Dorchester Longhorns Football t-shirt.

Unwanted Geese From Omaha Shipped To Saline Co.

In recent years, Canada Geese populations have exploded, so much so that many consider them pests (for their droppings, the bacteria in their droppings, noise and confrontational behavior). This problem is partially due to the removal of natural predators and an abundance of safe, man-made bodies of water -- as well as restrictive rules on hunting.

Now Omaha doesn't want the messy birds, so they are shipping here to Saline County.

WOWT-TV in Omaha reports that Nebraska State Game and Parks staffers recently rounded up gosling and female geese at Lake Candlewood in West Omaha. Game and Parks said about 30 gosling or young geese have been transplanted to a wildlife area in Saline County.

The Candlewood Homeowners Association requested the state remove the flock. In an e-mail to the neighborhood, the association representative said an adult goose could leave a pound of dropping each day which damages lawns and increases bacteria.

One overly sensitive Omaha resident was nearly in tears over the move. Joan Pistillo told the TV station: “It just makes me ill because I don’t know if they’re dead or where they took them. ... I couldn't tell my three grandkids what happened to the geese because they loved them as much as we did.”

Dorchester Street Dance Set For July 3

As noted by our readers, for the first time in several years, Dorchester's main street will be the stage for a top-notch street dance.

The Dorchester Volunteer Fire & Rescue Street Dance is set for Saturday, July 3. The event will start at 8 p.m. and last until midnight.

The street dance will feature live entertainment from The Shelia Greenwood Band, as well as beverages and plenty of food provided by local organizations.

A Look At Dorchester In 1920

The Times has located another stellar photo providing a fantastic glimpse of our main street (Washington Avenue) as it appeared around 1920. The picture is featured on a postcard currently being offered on Ebay.

The focal point of the photo is Dorchester's old Citizen State Bank building -- the present-day home of the village government -- on the west side of main street, between 7th and 8th Streets. At the time of the picture, the building also housed the Post Office (the far west end) and the Masonic & Good Fellows Hall (second floor).

Pay special attention to the beautiful architecture above the building's windows, as well as the gorgeous oak doors gracing the entryway of the bank.

Next door, just north of the bank, readers can clearly see that William Freidell's Grocery and Dry Goods Store is having a big "unloading sale." The glass store fronts that continue up the street show that Dorchester was a hub of business activity and free enterprise. However, it appears that the businesses were all closed when the picture was taken, since only a few piles of snow and a single horse and buggy occupy the street.

We are glad to see that Dorchester's main street once again has a strong pulse -- thanks to businesses like Donna's Hair Creations, Dorchester Grocery, Joe's Place, Ben's Iron Grill, Tyser Welding & Repair and Auto Sales, and others.

Let's support these businesses and keep the progress going.

Dorchester Man Sentenced For Stealing Metal

The news wires are reporting the following:

"Two brothers have been given three years of probation, delayed sentences of six months in Lancaster County jail and told to make restitution of $5,850 each for stealing scrap metal."

Ricky Scdoris, 53, of Lincoln was sentenced on Monday. He and his brother, John, 52, of Dorchester, "were arrested in October and accused of stealing scrap metal from Ricky’s employer, Alter Scrap. ... Investigators say Ricky had been giving some of the metal to his brother, who would sell it at another scrap yard. ... John Scdoris was sentenced last week."

Dustin Nelson Is Area's Newest Master Angler

Dorchester resident Dustin Nelson, age 11, is our area's latest Master Angler.

Dustin recently reeled in a flathead catfish -- also called yellow cats. The catfish was caught at an area lake (Dustin isn't giving us his secret spot) and weighed in at 18 lbs., 6 oz. It measured 34".

The catch qualifies him for the prestigious sportsman award.

The Nebraska record for a flathead is 80 lbs. The Times has learned Dustin already has plans on how to land an 81 pounder.

Dustin's whopper was released after it was weighed and measured. Dustin said he hopes someone else can have the excitement of catching this granddaddy.

The Times congratulates Dustin on his catch and deserved accolades.

EDITORIAL: Fremont Voters Do The Job The Feds Won't

On Monday, the voters of Fremont overwhelmingly approved a new ordinance to crack down on illegal immigration. By nearly a 60%-40% margin, Fremont residents enacted new code to prohibit the hiring of illegal aliens and to make it a crime to rent housing to such individuals.

The mainstream media and some civil liberty groups see this move as highly controversial. They need to consult Webster's Dictionary and read the definition of "illegal."

The voters of Fremont sent a strong message by proving real change happens at the local level, not DC. Moreover, they showed they are willing to do the job that the federal government won't; that is, enforce existing immigration law. In short, Fremont demonstrated intestinal fortitude, especially considering the threat of costly, baseless lawsuits from left-leaning organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a group that has devolved into the country's most anti-American organization -- all in the name of finding more work for its liberal lawyers.

We have heard from at least one candidate for Dorchester village board that our community should consider a measure similar to that of Fremont's. We agree. Dorchester residents should have the opportunity to vote on such a proposal, especially considering the challenges now facing nearby Crete.

As President Obama often says, make no mistake: immigrants continue to add great value to the fabric of our nation. Any low brow can repeat the line that we are a nation of immigrants. The questions that must be asked to critics of the Fremont ordinance and Arizona law are: What is your agenda? Why do you want our government officials to ignore our laws and borders?

Common sense says the United States can neither afford nor accommodate all of the third world's impoverished and unskilled. Over the past decade, illegal immigrants have drained our taxpayer resources, taken American jobs, added to the welfare rolls, stressed our education system, sent most their wages back to their homelands, and reversed America's melting pot by refusing to assimilate.

Fremont voters did the right thing yesterday. Bring on the lawsuits.

Facebook Users Are Fans Of Dorchester

The Times has learned from several of our loyal readers that Dorchester is on Facebook. Members of the social networking website can become fans of our community.

The Dorchester Facebook page contains plenty of information on the village and its residents. According to the Facebook page, there were 248 households in Dorchester's village limits in the 2000 census. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.88.

Dorchester's population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.

Bigfoot Story Stirs Memories Of Dorchester Area Sighting

Bigfoot may have been found, according to news wire reports. Two Georgia residents say they now possess the body of a Bigfoot -- the elusive forest-dwelling man-ape, also known as a Sasquatch -- and that they'll reveal it at a press conference in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday. (Note: This story was later proved to be a hoax.)

The two Georgia men say they recently found the body in the woods of northern Georgia. Veteran Bigfoot tracker Tom Biscardi said he's examined the body, and that scientists will get their chance soon.

This news item rekindles memories of stories told by a longtime Dorchester area resident, now deceased, who once told a Times staff member that he had clearly seen a creature resembling Bigfoot. According to the resident, the Bigfoot-like creature was spotted in the woods of Turkey Creek near Pleasant Hill in the mid-1980s. According to the account, the creature was witnessed for about 30 seconds from the present-day County Road II before quickly re-emerging into the thick vegetation surrounding the creek.

The Times is unaware of any other "Bigfoot" spottings in the area. However, a quick Web search revealed accounts of similar stories from Lincoln, Blue Springs (Gage County), Mead (Saunders County), the Sandhills, and the Omaha Indian Reservation.

We are highly skeptical of the existence of Bigfoot, in either Georgia or Nebraska. Nonetheless, upon reading the latest FOX News wire news -- and after seeing the accompanying photos -- we couldn't help but recall of the accounts of the Dorchester area Bigfoot. Perhaps the X-Files were right.

Charity Bike Ride Coming Through Dorchester

Dorchester will serve as a stop for a large benefit bike ride for the world hunger projects of the Nebraska United Methodist Church, the Times has learned.

NUMB stands for Nebraska United Methodist Bike Ride for Hunger. All told, the project has contributed more than $410,000 to alleviate hunger all around the world since the first ride in 1996. NUMB benefits the hungry in Nebraska and around the world and is sponsored by the Nebraska Annual Conference Board of Mission Outreach Hunger Committee.

This year, the riders will cover about 300 miles. Dorchester United Methodist Church will host what is called a SAG (service and gear) stop on Tuesday, June 29, in front of the American Legion building. This stop provides the 140 riders with some water and food to help sustain them on their ride.

Countywide Flag Retirement Set For Tonight

Dorchester's Public Image, Part II

In 2007, shortly after this blog first started publishing, the Associated Press ran a story on the increase in the construction of large grain silos due to the formerly booming ethanol industry. AP stories appear across the state and country, in newspapers that reach millions of Americans. Set in Dorchester, the 2007 silo story opened with the following:

"DORCHESTER, Neb. -- Outside of two bars and a bank there’s little activity on Washington Street here, where more windows are covered by boards than 'Open' signs. But at the end of the street, semi-trailers stir the dust near a concrete symbol of economic activity. It towers over the signs of small-town decay ...

Back then, the Times wrote that we believe the story served as a good reminder why Dorchester must make improvements to enhance our public image. As we wrote, public image does matter. After all, it is what attracts growth or expedites decline in a community.

We ask readers to consider all the positive developments in Dorchester over the past few years: a new school, new businesses, repairs along Main Street, a beautified city park, a new concession stand and football field entrance, and many home improvements throughout town.

Dorchester has a lot going for it. So is it fair to the majority of Dorchester residents that some homeowners and property owners around town are allowed to keep their real estate in disorder and disrepair?

Our town seems to have more than its fair share of negligent property owners. From the feedback we have received from fellow residents, it seems that taxpayer unrest is reaching a boiling point.

Perhaps it is time for a thorough scrubbing of the village ordinances. Also, community members should be asking themselves:

Why isn't some type of action being taken against owners who have junk vehicles on their property?
Does Dorchester need a committee on blighted property?
Is there enough interest that current residents and former residents or school alumni might contribute to a clean-up fund to remedy neglected properties?

$2,500 Grant Available From Monsanto

The Monsanto Fund wants to make a contribution to local communities as part of the America’s Farmers Grow Communities Project. One non-profit community organization in Saline county will receive $2,500. Area farmers are being asked to submit their nominations.

Wind Turbines Coming To Saline County?

A June 2 story in the Lincoln Journal Star reports that a grassroots group called the Saline County Wind Association is now up to 240 members. Yesterday, Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman even stopped by Saline Center Hall south of town to address the organization.

"I want to see us accelerate wind energy development in the state," Gov. Dave Heineman told more than 125. "It's all about jobs."

Nebraska ranks 22nd in wind energy development nationally. Heineman said he wants it in the top five or top 10 by 2020.

The Journal Star writes that Roger Belohlavy, a member of the association's board, said Saline County has good wind resources, two major power transmission lines and few center pivot irrigation systems to hamper placement and construction of wind turbines, and it is close to Lincoln and Omaha, the state's biggest electrical users. Nearly 100 landowners in Saline County have signed easement option agreements for more than 22,000 acres.

Wind energy developers are targeting six townships in the county that appear to have the greatest potential: Atlanta, Brush Creek, Monroe, North Fork, Pleasant Hill and Turkey Creek. Bob Mariska, 91, an association member from Pleasant Hill, said he visited a wind farm near Concordia, Kan., as part of a tour and liked what he saw. "They're thicker than a hair on a dog," he said. Harold Krivohlavek, 88, a landowner who has signed an easement option agreement, believes a wind project will be built in Saline County, but said: "I don't think I will live that long to see it."

Havlat Memorial Dedication Set For This Sunday Afternoon

This Sunday, May 30, the Dorchester Area Community Foundation (DACF) will host a dedication ceremony for the Havlat memorial marker. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Saline County Museum on the south side of town. (UPDATE: To see the Lincoln Journal Star's story on Private Havlat, click here.)

Speaking at the ceremony will be state Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber and Adolph Havlat (Private Havlat’s brother). The museum will be open Sunday afternoon and all area residents are encouraged to attend. This is a proper way to remember those who gave all.

A Dorchester native who died May 7, 1945, while helping to free a monastery in Czechoslovakia, Private Charles Havlat was the last soldier killed in the European Theater of World War II. Private Havlat's death occurred about six hours after the unconditional surrender of the Germans. For more on Private Havlat, click here.

In 2008, the Dorchester American Legion, Post 264, asked the State of Nebraska and the roads department to name the small stretch of Highway 33 between Dorchester and Crete after PFC Havlat, but the request was denied. The Dorchester Legion and the DACF worked to raise funds and place the historical marker on the grounds of the Saline County Museum. The project cost approximately $5,000.

Lawver Captures Gold At State -- Again

Dorchester's Karmen Lawver has again captured gold at the Nebraska State Track and Field Meet.

At the state meet held this past weekend, the DHS senior successfully defended her Class D discus title with a winning toss of 131'-4".

(Correction: Last year, Lawver made history by becoming the first DHS athlete to win a gold medal at the state meet since 1976, winning the discus event with a toss of 124' 6".)

In the shot put contest, Lawver fell only 10 inches short of repeating as state champion. Lawver took third place with a toss of 39' 1". Aundrea Jorgensen, Medicine Valley,won the gold with a throw of 39' 11". Last year, Karmen was crowned state shot put champ after her throw of 41' 7", beating the second place participant by nearly two feet.

Thanks to Lawver's two medals, DHS finished No. 12 in the the Class D team standings at the state track meet, beating conference rivals McCool Junction (No. 15) and Exeter-Milligan (No. 18). Lindsay Holy Family was No. 1 in team scores.

(FLASHBACK: In May 2007, Lawver placed 16th in the Class D discus event at the state track meet. In the hours after her performance, Dorchester track coach Joshua Vacek told The Crete News that Lawver has "all the attributes a state champion needs" and that "she will win the girls state discuss before she is done here" at Dorchester. "I'd almost bet on it," Vacek said. For the second year in a row, we say good call, Mr. Vacek.)

Bricks Help Fund New School Landscaping

Bricks from the 1927 Dorchester school building are now helping to beautify the 2008 school, the Times has learned.

As many area residents know, DPS art instructor Stacy Lutjemeyer has been busy in her spare time painting bricks pulled from the remnants of the old school building after it was razed in May 2008. For the past two years, Lutjemeyer painting images of the old school building, longhorn logos, and other designs on the red bricks, charging $20 per brick.

When she started painting the bricks, Lutjemeyer wanted to donate half of the proceeds from sales towards the new school or a scholarship. She chose to donate the money to pay for landscaping in front of the school, so that everyone in town could benefit from the money.

The landscaping project came to fruition after DPS guidance counselor Diane Fisher conducted a service learning project with the eighth grade class in agriculture and landscaping. This allowed the eighth grade class members to do the landscaping themselves and take some ownership in the project.

Area residents are asked to drive or walk past the school to see the great landscaping work. For those who would still like to purchase a brick -- as a souvenir from the old school -- Lutjemeyer reports that there are still plenty left. Contact her by e-mailing sschelbi@esu6.org.

Ten Good Reasons To Put Paving On The Ballot

The Times wants to go on the record one more time: We support paving at least some of Dorchester's streets. And we think the paving must begin by early 2011.

To ensure this happens, the question of paving must appear on this November's ballot. We urge the village board to let the residents of Dorchester decide this fall.

The Dorchester Volunteer Fire Dept. is looking for a few good individuals to join the ranks of this dedicated group of first responders. As our readers know, a small community depends heavily upon its volunteer firefighters and medical technicians.

According to DVFD Chief Zech Williams, the department's numbers are down and the current staff of volunteers are hoping fellow residents will help fill the shortfall by joining. Williams says the current DVFD staff includes only eight EMT’s and about 15 total members.

"We really need daytime coverage," Williams said, "but we will take the help if the individual works during the day."

Funds Available To Update Community Buildings

According to a communication sent to the Times, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has awarded $2,900 to the Elba, Neb. Community Foundation. Leveraged with $5,437 from the Elba Foundation, the funds will purchase community center appliances and equipment to make the center more functional and operational for community functions. USDA funding for this project was provided through the Community Facility Grant program.

Dorchester Public School Gets New Website

A couple of years ago, Dorchester Public School received a new home. Now the school has a new home page.

The website is still a work-in-progress. But when completed, it will provide parents and students a plethora of information, right at their fingertips.

The new site is sharp, clean and easy to read. Hit the "refresh" button on your Internet browser and you will see a new photo atop the DPS website, which contains links to staff information, the school calendar, lunch menus, handbooks and policies, and information on the DPS Board of Education.

One option that is certain to be used often is the "classroom websites" link found in the site's left column. Parents and students can go the classroom of their choice and learn the latest. For example, go to Mr. Rut's 5th Grade classroom and you will be able to see the latest announcements, discussion topics, quizzes, files, etc.

That means when Junior gets home, he can no longer say he did nothing in class today. Also, parents will no longer be able to say they can't get more involved in their children's academic work, assuming they have Internet access.

Large Number Of Czech Names Land Dorchester On National Rankings

In case you had any doubts, a recent national study has found that surnames of Czech descent are the most common in the Dorchester area. However, two of the top five names are of German origin. According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, the most popular last names in the Dorchester zip code are:

The large number of Czech names have also landed Dorchester on some national lists. According to information compiled by City-Data.com, Dorchester is No. 55 on the list of "top 101 zip codes with the largest percentage of Czech first ancestries."

Moreover, Dorchester is No. 97 on the list of "top 101 zip codes with the largest percentage of Czechoslovakian first ancestries." And the 68343 zip code is No. 101 on the list of "top 101 zip codes with the largest percentage of Slavic first ancestries."

D-1 District Track & Field Meet Postponed Until Tomorrow

The D-1 district track and field meet in Auburn, which will feature Dorchester and several other local Class D school, has been moved from today until tomorrow, May 13, due to wet conditions.

According to Crete News reporter B.J. Fictum, the field events will begin at 10 a.m., while running events will start at 1 p.m.

Much local attention will be focused on DHS senior Karmen Lawver, who won gold medals at the state meet last year in both the discus and shot put. She is currently ranked near the top of all female discus participants throughout the state, regardless of school size. Lawver's top throw this year is 134-8.

The district meet tomorrow will determine which DHS tracksters advance to the state track and field meet, which will be held the fourth weekend of this month. (UPDATE: DHS' Karmen Lawver earned another trip to the state championship when she captured first place in the D-1 district's shot put event, with a toss of 37-10.25, and the discus throw, with a throw of 132-0. The state championship track and field meet will be held May 21-22, 2010
at Omaha Burke Stadium in Omaha.)

Oregon Paper Profiles Saline County's Altman, Wilber

The Eugene, Oregon newspaper has profiled Saline County native Dana Altman, the new basketball coach at the University of Oregon. The Register-Guard's profile of Altman is titled "The man from Wilber," and the story features a west coast reporter's observations of our county seat -- including the Wilber Czech Museum and the Czech Bakery, the grain elevator and the railroad tracks, and the traditional Czech polkas.

In the article, Altman, who the article says "made his name coaching 90 miles away at Creighton University in Omaha," is hailed as the hard-working, genuinely nice local boy who made really good."

The article delves deep into Wilber, calling it "Altman’s hometown, population 1,761, (that) is a square mile of good life in the midst of corn country (and wheat, and more and more these days, soybeans). ... It’s also the self-billed 'Czech Capital of the USA,' and there’s no reason to doubt the claim. Roughly half the population is of Czech descent; a few decades ago, it was 90%. The town’s annual Czech Festival — first weekend in August — draws as many as 50,000 people for roast duck and dumplings, polka music and traditional dancing and, well, lots of beer."

The article continues: "The second of four children born to Lyle and Barb Altman, Dana played football, baseball and basketball in his backyard, and the games could get intense. Dana was a fiercely competitive, highly active kid who hated to lose. 'His desire to win always overshadowed everything,' says Russ Rezny, a friend and classmate."

Third-Annual Garage Sale Weekend Set For June 19

For the past two years, the communities of Dorchester and Friend have teamed up to host a community garage sale weekend. This has helped boost the number of customers and draw more attention to local newspaper and online advertisements.

This year's garage sale weekend set is for Saturday, June 19. However, Friend has chosen not to participate.

Organizers tell the Times that if Dorchester can come up with at least 10 garage sales, Dorchester will go forward and host the event by itself. Thus far, at least two individuals have indicated they would hold a garage sale if the event is held. Businesses are also urged to take part with sidewalk sales or other special events.

Vandals Strike New Park Shelter

The Times is saddened to report that one of the handicap picnic tables at the Dorchester City Park has been damaged by a group of vandals. According to sources, it will cost more then $500 to repair or replace.

One reader told the Times staff, "I'm curious if the person(s) that did the damage are readers of the Times and could tell the rest of us why they would do such damage." We are wondering the same.

Dorchester Area Community Foundation members and other community volunteers -- including the DHS wrestling team -- invested many hours to erect and finish the park shelter a few years ago. Scores of others donated money to make the new shelter a reality. It is a nice addition to the park and our town. We cannot understand why anyone -- regardless of their low IQ or lack of parental supervision -- would want to ruin a park shelter and source of town pride.

We urge young people in town to start help us safeguard our public resources, like the city park. Also, the Times hopes that anyone with information on this act of vandalism will report it to the Saline County Sheriff's Department at (402) 821-2111. EDITORIAL: Time For Nebraska To Adopt Arizona's Immigration Law

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about the firestorm sparked by Arizona's new anti-illegal immigration law. The passing and signing of the bill into law demonstrate that Arizona lawmakers and its governor have prioritized the safety and security of its citizens above all other considerations.

It is now time for Nebraska lawmakers to do the same.

The Arizona law is rather straight forward. It does the following three things:

Requires officials and agencies of the state and political subdivisions to fully comply with and assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Gives county attorneys subpoena power to investigate certain employers.

Establishes crimes involving trespassing by illegal aliens, stopping to hire or solicit work under specified circumstances, and transporting, harboring or concealing unlawful aliens.

Nearly two-thirds of voters in Arizona endorse the new law, according to a well-respected poll published this week. That level of support, from a state that is nearly 35% Hispanic, is proof positive that illegal immigration is a priority in the voters' minds.

It appears that state lawmakers in Texas, Maryland and other states will introduce a bill that mirrors the new Arizona law. Such a move makes sense. If the federal government won't protect its citizens and safeguard our borders, let the states do the job that federal politicians won't do.

It is our hope that several Nebraska state senators will also follow Arizona's lead and introduce similar legislation in the next session. And it needs to happen soon -- if not for the sake of national security and border sovereignty, then at least to address the fact that 8 million U.S. jobs today are held by illegal aliens, at a time of 10% national unemployment.

The time has come to fix the immigration mess.

Another Town Hall To Discuss Streets, Set For Monday

The Dorchester Village Board will conduct another town hall monthly meeting this Monday, May 3 at the Community Building. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. Much of the meeting will again be devoted to the condition of the streets and the possibility of paving.

The Times non-scientific online opinion poll found that roughly 82% (out of 167 votes) of readers say they want to consider paving. This publication recently advocated putting the issue on November's ballot. Approximately 13% of readers would rather see more gravel applied to the town's roads. About 4% want nothing done. Only one vote per IP address was allowed. Approximately 75-80 residents attended the April village board meeting to voice their support or opposition to street paving. According to various reports, two of the five current town board members oppose paving, while only one member publicly supports it. Reportedly, three of the board members will not be returning to the body next year.

All town residents, regardless of position on paving, are encouraged to attend Monday's public meeting to let their town representatives know their position. In the meantime, check out street-related comments left by Times readers by clicking here.

DHS Alumni Banquet Set For May 29

The DHS class of 1990 and the DHS Alumni Association will present the 2010 DHS Alumni Banquet on Saturday, May 29. Make your plans now to get caught up with friends and classmates.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the school. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for those who would like to see the new school. The banquet will feature Windsor Loins, as classes who graduated in years ending will "0" will be honored.

DHS Electric Vehicle Racing Team Takes Top Honors

The Times has learned that DHS' electric vehicle (EV) racing team has concluded their racing season and brought home some hardware. The team is comprised of DHS industrial arts students Jermey Inderlied, Sid Stern, Spencer Kotas, Kyle Palky, Russel Barak and Dustin Rathbun.

The Dorchester EV racing team competed in two races this year -- one in Lincoln and one in Columbus. They finished second in Lincoln, missing first place by only half of a lap. In Columbus, the DHS team came in first and won the school's first trophy. The winner of a race is determined by how many laps a car can do in an hour.

Omaha Public Power District started this program to challenge students to think about alternative fuel. Approximately 75 schools compete in the program, which is known as "Power Drive" or "Electrathon America." In addition to the competition and team work, the class teaches the students about aerodynamics; alternative fuels to help America diversify its energy sources; and the basics of how a car works. The students must devise a plan and build the car from scratch. Also, the students collect donations to help pay for the materials needed to build the car.

The DHS EV racing team would like to thank Young's Welding of Friend for donating all of the metal used to build the frame of the car; Al's Auto Body for donating the painting materials; and Palky Farms, CarQuest, Novak Auction Service, and Radio Shack for the cash donations.

Main Street Sees 59% Increase In Weekend Traffic Since '08

While Dorchester village officials should not expect any grumbling about traffic jams anytime too soon, they may want to take notice of the dramatic spike of weekend traffic on Main Street from just two years ago. They may also want to recognize the sizable increase in economic activity created by those who arrive in the additional vehicles.

According to a study conducted by the Times staff, traffic on Dorchester's three-block business district has surged 58.6% on Friday and Saturday nights compared to just two years ago.

The Times compared ten random traffic counts taken in 2008 and another ten taken in 2010. The tallies were taken between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday or Saturday evenings, when Dorchester's Main Street (Washington Ave.) tends to be its busiest.

In 2008, the average number of cars or trucks parked in the business district was 12. This year, the average number of autos was 29.

The increase in traffic can likely be attributed to the success of Ben's Iron Grill, Joe's Place and increased community activity at the Legion Hall and Dorchester Community Building.

The extra vehicles mean big dollars for Dorchester, even when using conservative estimates. We figure that each vehicle on Dorchester's Main Street on a Friday or Saturday evening equals at least $30 spent in town on food, drinks, donations, gasoline or something else. Using that figure, the additional 17 vehicles appearing in the business district on weekend nights would translate into an extra $53,000 spent in Dorchester throughout the course of a year.

An extra $53,000 in a town of 650 people? That, dear readers, is economic growth.

DHS' Lawver No. 1 In Class D, No. 5 In State For Discus

DHS Presents Murder Mystery/Comedy This Weekend: The Times has learned that the DHS drama team will be presenting "Murder's in the Heir" this Saturday, April 24, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m. Also, junior and senior high drama awards will be presented Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All area residents are invited to come to the show and help decide who committed the murder in this mystery/comedy.

Student Council Hosting Cookout On April 30: The DHS Student Council will host a hamburger cookout for area community residents and students on Friday, April 30. There will also be a "Make A Wish" auction to follow. Hamburgers will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the auction will start at 7:30 p.m. Location is the school parking lot. Proceeds will go to the "Make A Wish" Nebraska Chapter.

DHS Booster Club Needs $150 More To Reach Fundraising Goal: DHS Activities Director Scott Pohl thanks everyone who has graciously made a donation to help the DHS Booster Club achieve its goal of $1,000 toward the purchase of new scoreboards and wrestling mats. Old Church Is Reminder To Focus On The Future

While searching the Internet for Dorchester-related items, we came across the photo at the right of the old Dorchester Methodist Church.

As many of our readers know, the old Methodist Church was moved in the 1880s from Pleasant Hill to the east side of Dorchester, where it stood for more than 110 years. As the 20th century came to a close, the church was taken to its current location north of Wilber -- likely its final resting place -- to make room for the the new brick church.

The new Methodist Church is one of Dorchester's jewels. We do not regret that the church's forward-looking leaders favored reconstruction. However, it saddens us to witness the long goodbye of Dorchester's old church. It is not the dignified end we would have envisioned for a building that served the town and its faithful so well for so many years.

That said, we don't want to get mired in nostalgia. As JFK once noted, those who look only to the past are certain to miss the future.

And Dorchester, we believe, should have its sights set on the future.

Dorchester Times Notes Three Years Online

Three years ago this week, the Dorchester Times made its debut. Today -- nearly 1,100 days and an estimated 250,000 page views later -- we find ourselves the most widely read Web site based in Saline County.

Back in April 2007, we wrote: "Welcome to the Dorchester Times. This site is dedicated to our town, Dorchester, Nebraska. While we relish our proud past, we also enjoy the blessings of today and eagerly look forward to the future." The same holds true today.

Some of the reader comments from our very first post included the following:

Jessica Hansen Elected State FBLA Secretary

The Dorchester Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter attended the FBLA State Leadership Conference April 8-10 at Omaha’s Holiday Inn Central. The students heard motivational speakers, competed in various business tests and had social activities with more than 2,000 students from across the state.

According to Dirk Coon, DHS business and computers instructor and the DHS FBLA adviser, the Dorchester chapter was recognized with the "Go Green" award and the "Sweepstakes" award. The "Go Green" award consisted of completing a variety of environmental activities, such as highway cleanup and educating elementary students about recycling. The "Sweepstakes" award was based on the completion of another set of activities, including having a state FBLA officer speak at a meeting, writing four chapter reports, creating and managing a local FBLA Web site and attending state meetings.

Also at the conference, Jessica Hansen received honorable mention top 5% in the areas of cyber security and sports management. Hansen was also elected as Nebraska's FBLA state secretary for the 2010-11 school year. To qualify as a candidate, she had to pass a test about the history and procedures of FBLA, give a speech and be interviewed. In addition to other duties, she will attend the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in July; present at the State Fall Leadership Conference in 2010; present at the State Leadership Conference in 2011; act as a speaker at local chapter meetings; and take minutes at all state officer functions.

We congratulate Jessica on her new leadership role and commend the DHS FBLA chapter on a job well done.

EXCLUSIVE: One-Third Of DPS Students Getting Free Or Reduced Lunches

A third of the students at Dorchester Public School are receiving their meals courtesy of the state's taxpayers. That is according to the latest "State of the Schools Report" released by the Nebraska Dept. of Education.

The report states that last school year (2008-09), about 33% of the student body in the Dorchester school district were receiving their meals free or at reduced prices.

The rules determining whether students can get their meals free or reduced are set at the federal level in Washington, DC. Those guidelines are based on family size and income or benefits such as Food Stamps or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families.

Only 18% of students in the Wilber-Clatonia school district receive free or reduced price lunches, while about 23% in the Friend school district get their meals courtesy of the taxpayer.

Nearly 40% in the Crete school district get free or reduced meals.

On average across Nebraska, about 35% of K-12 students get taxpayer subsidized or purchased meals.

EDITORIAL: Put Paving On The Ballot

On the issue of paving, it is time to let the people decide. Let's put the question on November's ballot.

This is the position of the Times staff.

Monday's townhall and public meeting held by the Dorchester Village Board -- and attended by approximately 75 residents -- revealed several challenges facing our community. Not only are the streets a mess, but the village will soon need to devote some dollars to repairing drinking water infrastructure, including the water tower.

But comments from the public made it clear: There is a strong resolve to at least begin the process of paving Dorchester's streets. (After our many rants on community appearance, we take satisfaction in knowing we have lots of company.)

As one Dorchester resident told the board, we have a choice. We either address Dorchester's street problems today or we pass them off to next generation. And if we chose the latter, there may not be a next generation.

Also, as another townhall participant commented, there will never be another time in the next 30 years when materials and interest rates are as low as they are now.

We were very disturbed to hear a small handful of Dorchester property owners who live in other communities are opposed to Dorchester residents attempting to improve their quality of life. This issue needs to be decided by the citizens of Dorchester -- not by real estate owners who reside in Friend or elsewhere.

We are hopeful more young people, those under 40 years old, will speak up. In 1979, it was primarily the opposition by young families that killed paving. This time around, let's hope that it will be the vocal support for paving from this age group that pushes the issue through to fruition.

With paved streets will come new home construction; more home improvements; increased property value; less damage to vehicles; better air quality; less money spent on gravel and city employee labor; a renewal of community pride; and a better quality of life in general. Supporting paved streets is the easy call. Finding the means to pay for them is a much more difficult task. But to delay the project would be Dorchester's ultimate folly.

It's time to let the chips fall where they may. The well-being of Dorchester is in the balance.

Manufacturing Camp Set For June 11-12 In Milford

Local high school juniors and seniors who want to explore opportunities in the well-paying manufacturing sector now have a chance to get hands-on experience in designing and making a product start to finish. And in the process of learning, they will have a fun time doing it.

The 2010 Manufacturing Summer Camp is set for June 11-12 at Southeast Community College in Milford. Participants will learn how new products are invented; tour local manufacturing facilities; and learn how local entrepreneurs created their businesses.

At Least Five Challengers Filing For Village Board Seats: According to various reports, at least five challengers will seek one of the three town board seats up for election this fall. Sources tell the Times four of the five challengers support at least partially paving Dorchester streets. The fall elections could mean big changes to the Village Board. Currently, two of the five board members staunchly oppose paving, while only one publicly supports it. The other two board members appear to be undecided. Those who want to run for the village board have until Aug. 1 to file at the county election clerk's office in Wilber -- unless they already hold another elected office, in which case they have until July 15.

Wind Energy Legislation Appears Likely To Pass At Legislature: Remember all that talk about a wind farm being located in Saline County? Some supported the idea; others said it was plain goofy. Whatever the case, the proponents of that plan will likely have more ammunition in a couple of weeks. It appears the state Legislature is about to pass a wind energy bill that would allow private development within a public power state to develop wind for export. The bill is LB 1048. The Lincoln Journal Star has a story about it in their April 3 edition.

BREAKING: Sources Say Paving Begins Tomorrow

A well-respected, trusted source has informed the Times that paving equipment will roll into town tomorrow morning to begin paving more than a dozen of Dorchester's gravel streets.

The source spoke to the Times on the condition of anonymity. According to details provided, a Lincoln-based company will be conducting the paving work. "We're going forward," the source said.

When asked if the village board had the authority to pave streets without a direct vote of Dorchester residents, the Times was told that "gap paving" is allowed under Chapter 19 of the State Statutes. Paving will occur on streets connected to existing paving, for up to 1325 feet from existing pavement, according to the source.

Reportedly, former village board members who served during the 1979 paving debate will be on hand to watch the process. The former board members "may even break ground on one of the gravel roads," the source said.

The Times has learned that several paving opponents have caught wind of the plan and will be picketing on Main Street to greet the pavers.

The picketers are said to be considering resurrecting a key argument used by opponents in the 1979 dispute.

The slogan picketers will use? "We lived on a farm and walked in both dirt and manure and it didn’t hurt us."

Times Survey: 86% Want To Consider Paving

A week before a critical townhall meeting on the condition of Dorchester's streets, roughly 86% (126 votes) of Times readers say they want to consider paving. That is according to the results of a Dorchester Times online poll.

As of 9 a.m. this morning, 147 readers participated in the online poll, which will be active for another week.

Approximately 13% (19 voters) of readers would rather see more gravel applied to the town's roads. About 1% wants nothing done.

Earlier this month, town residents attended the Dorchester village board meeting and presented photos showing street conditions in their neighborhood. Those residents told the Times that the village board is not nearly as supportive of paving as readers of the Times.

According to various reports, two of the five current town board members oppose paving, while only one member publicly supports it. The other two members appear to be undecided.

Three of the board members will not be returning to the body next year. Those who want to run for the village board have until Aug. 1 to file at the county election clerk's office in Wilber -- unless they already hold another elected office, in which case they have until July 15.

A week from tonight, on April 5, a special townhall and town board meeting will be held at the Dorchester Community Building. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. All town residents, regardless of position on paving, are encouraged to attend.

A-FAN Features Weber Feedyards In Promotional Video

Dorchester has its own YouTube sensation.

Thanks to an e-mail from a Times reader, we have been alerted to a video featuring a tour of Dorchester's Weber Feedyards, located just a couple of miles west of town. Produced by the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska (A-FAN), the video feature feedyard owner and operator Joel Weber, who explains the importance of providing good care for cattle. During the short video, he notes that comfortable cattle perform better and produce higher quality beef.

Livestock production is a key to wealth in Nebraska. A-FAN reports that Nebraskans living in the state's top seven livestock producing counties enjoy higher levels of personal income than those living in other non-metropolitan counties, according to a study by NPPD. Residents in those top seven counties had a 10% higher average annual per capita personal income than their counterparts in other rural counties.

When it comes to the livestock industry, Saline County is trailing the herd. Saline County ranks 48th of the 93 Nebraska counties when comparing market value of ag products per acre, according to an NPPD study. Saline County has a $190-per-acre ag product value, of which about $54 can attributed to the county's livestock and livestock products. That is 10% less than the Nebraska average. We agree with our e-mailing reader who said, "More livestock in Saline County would go a long way in lowering the property tax burden."

Severe Weather Workshop This Sunday At Saline Center

Dorchester lies in the heart of Tornado Alley. That is why we recommend that area residents consider attending the 16th annual Regional Severe Weather and Spotter Training Workshop, 1-5 p.m., this Sunday, March 28, at Saline Center Hall, just southwest of Dorchester on Nebraska 15.

Storm-chasing videos, severe weather safety, communications, mass casualty and emergency management and displays will be part of the seminar, according to B.J. Fictum, Saline County emergency management coordinator.

The speakers and their presentations include:

Mike Mogil, Naples, Fla., nationally recognized climatologist and author of "Extreme Weather" and other books, will discuss this winter's unusual weather and what to expect this spring and summer.
Brian Smith, warning coordination meteorologist, National Weather Service office in Valley. "2010: The Year Spotters Make Contact," will include spotter training and safety. Smith studied with Theodore Fujita, developer of the tornado intensity F scale and is a national expert in tornado damage analysis.
Dustin Wilcox, Beatrice, owner of SevereChase, a Web-based source of severe weather footage and photos, will talk and show videos of the 2009 chase season, including the Aurora tornado. Wilcox has had footage shown on networks including The Weather Channel's Storm Stories.

Book Explores Problem Of Out-Migration From Rural Communities

In a posting at Wired.com, journalist Jonathan Liu has written a review of a new book on the problem of out-migration that has negatively impacted the Great Plains and rural America for the past three decades.

"Hollowing Out the Middle: The Rural Brain Drain and What It Means for America" is a new book by Patrick Carr and Maria Kefalas. Liu, who recently moved to a small rural town in western Kansas (population: 800), decided to read the publication because of his interest in community development and his concern that the "brightest kids" from rural America "often leave for bigger cities and don’t come back."

Liu writes that authors Carr and Kefalas are a husband-and-wife team of sociologists who reside in rural town in northeastern Iowa. The couple interviewed hundreds of people, focusing mostly on the young adults who graduated from the small town in the 1990s. Liu says, "What they found makes for a fascinating story about the 'hollowing out' of middle America, and they argue unequivocally that, yes, it matters, whether you live in New York City or Tribune, Kansas."

The book's authors sorted their subjects into four basic categories: Achievers, Stayers, Seekers, and Returners. Achievers are the ones who show promise early on -- and are academically (or sometimes athletically) gifted -- and typically leave their small communities for college, never to return. Stayers are those who take over the family business or get a job during high school and end up living out their adult lives in the same town. Seekers are those who can’t wait to leave, but don’t have the grades or scholarships to do it; they often end up in the military as an escape. Returners are those who come back to their small town after leaving; sometimes out of a sense of responsibility and purpose, but often because the outside world turned out to be less pleasant or more challenging than they expected.

The authors "devote an entire chapter to each of the four groups, outlining the reasons many of these young people make their respective decisions," Liu writes.

He adds: "Rural communities expend a disproportionate amount of effort, resources, and training on the very kids that aren’t likely to stay; and the ones who stay often get little attention. ... (T)his inefficient practice is what has gutted so many small communities across the Midwest and it has had a devastating effect."

Liu said what troubled him the most is that when the book's authors talked to administrators at the small-town Iowa high school, "there was no surprise that their smartest kids were being put on a path to leave: it’s what they’d always done, and they knew they were doing it. ... After you spend ten years training a kid to think he’s 'too good' for his small town, can you turn around and convince him that he should stay?"

Liu concludes that the book's authors make a compelling argument for why the rural brain drain matters (both to the rural communities and for the entire nation) and then offer possible solutions. You can purchase Hollowing Out the Middle from Amazon or your favorite bookseller.

Challenge Issued To DHS Nation: Your Financial Help Needed

The Dorchester Booster Club is offering a challenge to DHS alumni, patrons of the Dorchester School District and residents of the Dorchester area community. Numerous gym renovation projects are planned, according to DPS Activities Director Scott Pohl, including installation of new scoreboards, which school officials hope to acquire before the 2010-11 sports season. New wrestling mats are also being considered.

The Booster Club will match up to $1,000 for any donations that are given to the school towards the purchase of the new scoreboards and or wrestling mats. Todd Jensen, along with the Dorchester Little Kids Wrestling program, are also offering to make a significant donation toward these major purchases.

Three Longhorns Named All-Staters

Three DHS basketball players have been awarded Class D1 all-state honors this weekend.

The March 21 issue of the Lincoln Journal Star lists Dorchester senior Spencer Kotas in its boys' all-state honorable mention rolls.

DHS seniors Charity Springer and Karmen Lawver were bestowed all-state honorable mention accolades for girls' basketball. This marks the second consecutive year Lawver has been named to the all-state list.

We salute both all three Longhorns for their accomplishments on the court and are glad to see their hard work pay off in the form of deserved recognition.

DHS Basketball & Volleyball Tournaments Set For This Weekend

The sixteenth annual Dorchester Alumni Basketball Tournament is set for March 19-21 at the Dorchester High School gymnasium, according to DHS activities director Scott Pohl.

Ten teams are registered for this year's tournament. The first game will tip off Friday evening, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. and the tourney will run through Sunday, with the championship game at 4 p.m. (Click on the image at the upper right to see a larger view of the 2010 tournament bracket.)

The DHS Alumni Volleyball Tournament will also be held held in the Dorchester multi-purpose room (new gym). A round-robin tournament will take place Saturday morning to determine the seeding for a single elimination tournament, which will be held in the afternoon.

Also, several events are planned for this weekend, including a DACF fundraiser lunch on Saturday at the Community Building and special events at Joe's Place and Ben's Iron Grill. Community Foundation Plans March 20 Meals For Alumni Tournaments

Those participating in this year's DHS Alumni Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments this weekend will have hot food waiting between games and after the action.

According to information sent to the Times, on Saturday, March 20, the Dorchester Area Community Foundation (DACF) will be serving soup and hamburgers at the community building . There is no word yet on the times that the DACF will be serving, but stay tuned for more information on this event.

The DACF is focusing their fundraising efforts on their next project -- permanent "Welcome" sign that will greet travelers coming through Dorchester on Highway 33 and the spur off Highway 6. The town's park shelter was the original project spearheaded by this group. If you are interested in serving on the Welcome Sign Committee, contact Dale Hayek at (402) 641-4075.

Please make plans to join DACF for a great meal and help the foundation raise funds for the town's welcome signs.

Could Immigration Enforcement Be Coming To Saline Co.?

Last summer, the Times received a couple anonymous e-mail tips that claimed federal authorities were planning an "immigration enforcement action" in Saline County. We waited, but such action never came -- at least that we are aware of.

Now, about eight months later, federal authorities have indicted 17 people in Fremont on fraud, identity theft and related charges following an immigration probe at a meatpacking plant. The AP reports that U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg's office says a federal grand jury has returned indictments on those people arrested March 9 at the Fremont Beef Co. for immigration violations.

The suspects are accused of using the identities of U.S. citizens who had complained to the Federal Trade Commission that their identities had been stolen. The 17 people come from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

We wonder if similar action could be coming to a location closer to home? No word yet from our tipsters.

Sign Up Now For Baseball, Softball Teams; Meeting Is March 23

Spring is in the air. Soon you'll be hearing that sweet sound of bat on ball!

Parents, please note that area youth who are interested in playing Dorchester baseball or softball are encouraged to sign up now. The participation fee is $25 for one child to play and $35 if there are multiple children from the same family. Also, a $50 refundable deposit is required; parents will get the $50 back if they volunteer to work twice in the concessions shack or umpire a game on the bases. Players are required to buy a uniform shirt, which will be theirs to keep.

The parents of all interested players should contact a baseball/softball committee member for more information. The committee members are "Big Lee" Hohensee, Bill Velder, Lisa Wells, Kim Plouzek and Lyle Weber.

There will be an organizational meeting this Tuesday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the school for "last chance" sign-up and to gather more information. If you sign up after March 31, there will be a $10 late fee. The committee is also looking for coaching candidates, and will be hiring two people to umpire behind the plate for the season. The organization will pay for the two umpires to get certified and supply them with proper gear. Those interested in the coaching or the paid umpire positions should contact one of the committee members.

Area Residents Place 3rd In Polar Bear Tank Race

On March 5-6, more than a dozen residents of the Dorchester area joined several other brave souls in a race down the Middle Loup River near Mullen, Neb. in livestock tanks. The third annual Polar Bear Tank Race involved teams of 4-6 members who competed in a rally race aboard a stock tank for approximately four miles.

The race was limited to 22 teams. Participants also came from Lincoln, Genoa, Omaha, Ralston, McCook, Valparaiso, Raymond, Anselmo, Halsey, Stapleton, Chadron, Broken Bow, Crete, Wilber and the states of Iowa, Colorado and Texas. The event was a fundraiser for the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, Nebraska Highway 2 from Grand Island to Alliance.

The four local gentlemen pictured above came in third place. They generously returned their winnings of $230 to the Scenic Byways organization. The team was comprised of (back row) Joel Hoesche, Roger Beranek, Darryl Coffey and (front) Larry Kasper.

Janelle Weber Places At NAIA National Championship Meet

Former DHS Longhorn Janelle Weber, now a senior with the Doane College Track and Field women’s team, earned an 11th place finish at the NAIA National Championship Meet held in Johnson City, Tenn., this past week. The Doane women finished 17th overall at the championship meet. Weber competed in the triple jump at the national meet, jumping a distance of 38-00.25. We congratulate Janelle on her impressive accomplishment.

DACF Steak Feed & Fundraiser This Saturday

This Saturday evening, March 6, the Dorchester Area Community Foundation (DACF) is again hosting its Steak and Hamburger Feed. The event will be held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Dorchester Legion and Community Building. Those attending will be treated to a delicious 12 oz. rib eye steak for $12. The meal will include a dinner salad, baked potato, dessert, and beverage. The Legion bar will be open also. This event was a hit last year, with nearly 200 served. For smaller appetites, a hamburger meal is also available.

With the recent completion of the Charley Havlat Memorial marker, located on the grounds of the Saline County Museum, will use the proceeds from Saturday's steak feed for their next project -- a permanent "welcome" sign place along the highways coming into town. The Dorchester City Park shelter was the first project spearheaded by DACF. Those interested in serving on the DACF Welcome Sign Committee should contact Dale Hayek at (402) 641-4075.

Plan on joining your friends and neighbors from all around the area and help us "welcome" everyone to Dorchester.

April 5 Town Board Meeting Will Address Streets

As we reported earlier, almost all the reader comments at this month's Open Forum are related to the condition of Dorchester's streets. We were pleased to read the comments from Carol Olson, who reports that she attend Monday's village board meeting, along with fellow resident Joyce Karl. Olson wrote that she spoke to the village board and presented photos showing street conditions in her neighborhood.

In her comments, Olson reports: "Two of the board members believe that the town's residents, like themselves, don't want paved streets. One board member supports paving. The other two members seem to be on the fence."

Olson says that she and Karl "will put on their muck boots" and go door-to-door to gather the residents' opinions about what should be done about the street conditions here in town.

According to village board member Lyle Weber, streets will be a key agenda item on the agenda for the April board meeting. The next town board meeting will be Monday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in the Community Building. Weber writes: "Everybody who cares about this topic (for or against) should attend this meeting. Let the board know how you feel, either way."

The Times is on the record. Long ago, we said that our staff supports paving at least some of Dorchester's streets. Over the long term, paved streets would greatly improve Dorchester's quality of life and bring new and improved housing to town, which in turn would generate considerably more revenue for the community and school district.

Paving also makes sense in the short term. In recent years, the Village of Dorchester has budgeted more than $70,000 for maintenance of streets. This figure does not include the cost of employee labor -- and benefits.

Since the days of the "great paving debate of 1979," the Times estimates that the Village of Dorchester has spent roughly $1.65 million on upkeep of gravel roads (not including labor). This is money that could have been better used for permanent paving projects over the past 30 years.

In the end, paved streets make sense if Dorchester residents want their town to thrive in the 21st century. Paved streets are the answer for those Baby Boomers will spend their retirement years here. Paved streets are needed if we want our young people to consider making Dorchester their home in the future.

Candidates For Village Board, School Board Must File By Monday

As a reminder, this is an election year. In Dorchester, there are both village board seats and school board seats open. We are told by several sources that some incumbents have not filed for re-election and candidates are needed to fill the vacancies.

Individuals who currently do not hold any elected office have until Monday, March 1 to file. Nebraska's primary election is May 11. Candidate filing forms may be found here. Or for more information, contact the Saline County Clerk's office by calling (402) 821-2374.
