BREAKING NEWS: Daryl Schrunk To Become Next Superintendent Of DPS

Daryl Schrunk of Columbus has accepted an offer to become the next superintendent of Dorchester Public Schools.

Schrunk is in his forties, and is currently serving his fifth year with the Columbus Lakeview Community School district. Lakeview has a statewide reputation for being an incredible district with great programs and high student achievement.

Schrunk has 13 years of experience as a Nebraska school administrator, and was principal at Platte Center Elementary before a districtwide elementary principal position was created for the current school year.

The Times' research shows that Schrunk is not only an educator but a strong community leader, as well.  For example, he served as the Columbus Visitor Bureau’s Sports and Activities Council director.  We have received very positive reports from our contacts in the Columbus area.

This appears to be a tremendous hire by the Dorchester School Board and a fantastic opportunity for DPS to excel in the future.

  2. Awesome news! Let's all make Mr. Schrunk and his family feel welcome. It would be great to see our superintendent live in the school district once again, as Galen Johnson and others did. I know housing is a challenge but I think a superintendent living in the district can set the example for other school employees that "we are all in this together!"

    1. And where exactly are they going to live in our district?? To bad the town doesn't have any options.

    2. When public school officials make more than $100,000 in many cases and they are paid by the district patrons, they should live or build in town. There are lots available on the north end of town. Also why is the city board not trying to figure out how to resolve the issue of the handful of abandoned homes, like the one on 9th and jefferson or the two on main street? How about a $100/mo. fine if youre home has been sitting empty for over a year any its not for sale or rent? Towns need to have rules and rules that are enforced.

    3. If the superintendent ends up not liking the town, he would be out a tremendous amount of money trying to build a house. Not to mention waiting to get into the house. If he could find a house that is a great fit for him and his family elsewhere, then so be it. We still have a strong leader in our school, which he was hired for. He is not paid 100,000 to live in Dorchester.

  4. A group of town residents discussed the housing situation today. It would be great to bring in a housing developer to let those who want to explore investment housing in our town do so. Dorchester could easily support a small duplex system for families and seniors.

  6. Friday night lights. Won't happen until the school board figures out that it would be good for the town also. Local businesses would be packed

    1. Can't we all just get along?

In a moment of seriousness, I will offer this: it would be great to see the town board and school board hold some joint meetings or town halls. We need a vision and a plan.

  7. Many school districts in nebraska require administrators to live in the district or offer incentive pay to do so.

  8. It's unfortunate that a few of the individuals posting "their great ideas" didn't put their name on the ballot for election. But wait, that would take time and be a commitment. It easier to just run off with their mouth.

    1. When you have misinformation coming from the county clerk's office, I don't think you can blame people for "not putting their name on the ballot." I know of at least three people who called the clerk's office and were told they had until August. That's a crying shame.

    2. Who are these other three people, let us voters at least have the chance as a write in ballot..

  9. Maybe the school district would consider purchasing a house built by SCC Milford, move it onto a basement in Dorchester for the superintendent. The house would be owned by the school district and could possibly be tax exempt (check with county assessor). The superintendent could live there as long as they held the position, or could choose another house in the district or build.
