Suggestion Box: Recommendations For The School Board

This is the first post in our "Suggestion Box" series, providing Times readers the opportunity to submit comments and questions for elected officials serving on the Dorchester School Board.

Questions and suggestions may address a variety of issues, ranging from topics such as school activities, classroom curriculum, option enrollment, facilities, and school budget and spending issues.

We ask readers to keep their comments civil and thoughtful, just as if you were attending a public meeting or speaking to board members face-to-face.

Elected officials need to be accountable to their constituents.

But please keep in mind that school board members, like other local leaders, are volunteers. Respect them and their willingness to be a public servant.

  1. my suggestion is to make all teachers, esp the young ones, aware of the fact they are not required to pay dues to the teachers union. the teachers union serves no useful role in nebraska education and the only reason that poor educators are given tenure after a couple of years is due to the teachers union up there in lincoln. end the teachers union monopoly and let us run our own local schools.

My recommendation would be taken from your reader poll ... give "half grade" extra credit to students who play at least two sports or belong to at least three three organizations, such as drama club. If two students have a B+, but one does nothing but go to school, the one out for sports or taking part in other outside activities should get an A-. He/she is more valuable to me as an employee since I know he/she can handle the workload.

  4. you can't force a kid into sports or other activities. A kid must have the want to go out for these things and most kids do but the parents don't. I have noticed in this town that kids want to do things but the parents don't want to take the time out of their day to drive the kids to these activities which is sad. My recommendation to the school board is what can the school do to help transport these kids. Also what can the school do to keep kids in our district parents are pulling their kids out of our school and shipping them off to crete wilber and friend

  5. Can the school board break into homes and kick some of these parents off the couch, break their TVs and smash their little computers?

That would help the kids for sure.

  6. i agree, when kids have been in our school, and all of a sudden the school is not good enough, I realy think it is the parents that need help, I would never uproot my kids, even if they are grown now. Parents need to have a good reason. And all should have to meet with the school board.

  9. Problems may be with the board, administration and staff.

Do a study and see what the public has to say.

Better do it quick before our school is gone

  11. When we started this site, we believed most people would post their names when commenting.

It became quite clear in a short amount of time how nasty people treat one another on the Internet, even in a small town.

Funny thing is, some still wonder why the Times staff doesn't reveal who we are.

All we say to that is: Do you blame us?

  12. Village Dweller, my personal opinion is that the comment section should be disabled. When asking for constructive solutions and opinions, you could also post the dates and times of school board and village meetings. The serious people will show up. The rest will continue to self-destruct in the privacy of their own misery. This is such a great site, littered by a hand-full of people's ignorant and rude comments.

  14. SUGGESTION - 1.the act of suggesting. 2. something suggested. 3. the sequential thought process by which one idea or concept leads to another. 4. the Psychological process by which an idea is induced in or adopted without argument, command, or coercion.

Employer has a start, the involved student that pulls the same grade as a non-active student. Much like the weighted classes some schools have for determining Valedictorian or Salutatorian. Students taking calc, or trig, have higher gpa than student taking General math course.

Transporting youth. Can students carpool to practice. I know some license restrictions they can't give rides to non family. Maybe state school board work with unicameral to allow school activity practices an exemption. You never know until you try.

Keep thinking and building on each other. We're all in this together.
