What's On Your Mind, Dorchester?

As promised, this post is for all of you who have something to say about everything.

Earlier this year, the Times posted its formal comment policy, in part to keep comments more germane to the original story. We discourage comments that have absolutely no relevance to the Times' post.

However, because this blog was designed to facilitate lively discussion and the free flow of ideas, it is only fair that we occasionally publish a "general comments" post -- in which any topic is fair game.

From the beginning, we said we value the feedback from our readers. This is the community's blog.

So let us know your thoughts, your complaints, your concerns -- on any issue. We're listening.

47 comments:

  1. OK, how about the pit bull right next to the school? How can that be permitted?

    That's my concern.

  3. I've left several comments about different stories that weren't included in this blog....my comments weren't inflammatory, but apparently they struck a nerve of someone on your "staff". It was my understanding that you would print information that wasn't negative toward a particular person.
If you want a lively discussion, don't cut comments that may not align with your own. This blog has turned into a display of "sugar and spice and everything nice" -- about Dorchester. If you want "lively discussions", let your readers post THEIR thoughts and opinions, not just those readers who follow YOUR lead.

  6. I heard a rumor that Dorchester is sending 4 boys to state wrestling. Is that true, and if so, who?

  7. ok Question??

Whats with all the livestock in town?

I thought it was against the codes to have livestock with in the city limits

there are horses, chickens, ducks, sheep.

I would think this should be eliminated.

  8. Congratulations to Brandon Schwisow, Adam Kahle, Jordan Inderlied and Russell Barak on their finishes in the top 4 at districts and qualifying for the state tournament later this week!! Good luck boys!!!

  10. Get over yourself, Munchkin.

18,000 visitors since December 1 have lived without your whining. I figure I'm a better man for it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hey munchkin

    You are 100 percent right.

I agree with everything you said.

This blog was designed to get a new school built and to slam the village board.

    Have a good day

  12. How about the dogs that supposedly "responsible" dog owners let run the town? We put our trash out the night before garbage is picked up and it gets spread all over town by the dogs that people let out to run the town.

    How about ----BUILD A FENCE!!

Or maybe I should dump the trash your dog has drug all over MY yard in YOUR yard for YOU to pick up!

  13. Here is a brilliant suggestion to those complaining about this blog. DON'T READ IT. It's like the goofy liberals who cry about Fox News and then still watch it. I wish I was running a blog. I'd block all your goofy comments.

  14. What is wrong with the horses, chickens, ducks, and sheep being in town? This is not a big city this is a farming community... At least they are fenced up and not running the town like all the dogs and cats. They also are a great help to families in these times providing egg's and things like that. It would be interesting to know what the village rules are about ALL animals and one way or another let it go or enforce them ALL. Let's stop picking and choosing what rules we want to enforce and what ones are a case by case depending on who it is violating them. Either make the rules and stand by them or strike them off the books. I know the dogs in our area make just as much mess and noise as any "farm" animal would, barking all hours of the day and night, digging in the garbage, and running at will leaving gifts behind. I don't think there should be any issue with having those animals in town ! ! ! As far as that goes how many cities could you get away with driving 4-wheelers, mowers, and golf carts through town? It would be nice to know the rules on that. How come some people seem to be able to and others get called on it ?!?!?

  15. The problem with this blog is that it's a venting board for people with personal gripes.

I've lived in this community for 48 years. Like any other town, it has lots of good qualities and a few bad. I'm tired of the malcontents who like to tear down others, esp. school aged kids. That's just sick. I'm also tired of those who use it to air grievences with their neighbors.

When it comes to dogs running loose, the condition of the streets, etc., that's fair game, I think. But when it comes to next door neighbors, why waste your time and energy to type public comments about why your next door neighbor is making your life miserable? How about going over and having a civil conversation with them, face to face?

Again I have lived in this town 48 years and never once have I heard anyone complain about horses or other farm animals in town until I read the comments on this blog.

  16. To Munchkin and the Anonymous who agreed with him/her:
What is your problem? I don't have a clue who the people are who started and maintain this blog, but I would be willing to bet that your previous comments weren't posted for a reason--or maybe you failed to SUBMIT your comments, haha. You say they weren't a personal attack on anyone, but yet you are directly attacking the blog owners in your latest post. Quit your whining. The same goes for your buddy Anonymous who thinks the blog was created to get the school built and slam the village board. The school is built--get over it--and there's a reason the majority of people in this town complain about the village board, and if you can't see why then you need to open your eyes. I'm glad there's some new blood in there and hopefully they can help move this town forward. I agree with Bob, if you don't like the blog, then don't read it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Maybe the reason we cant get people to move to our town is because they dont want to live beside a pen of chickens, or ducks, or sheep, or horses.

    It is a code.

With the new blood we have on the village board, we should be getting something done about it.

and................how about the bomb shell holes in the streets.

  18. While Brandon Bruha and Brandon Zoubek are valuable members of the squad, I didn't realize that two boys can carry the entire team.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am a graduate of Dorchester, a former high school coach and teacher-- not at Dorchester. I agree with the post that two young men on a basketball team who are very good can't carry a team. I tried to post the same thing about 5 days ago and it was ignored. It was all positive. I did summit it.

  20. 'Dickie V.':

Your comments are "not at all impressive."

    Therefore, they have been rejected.

Someday, when you decide to grow up and get a life of your own, you will find something better to do than deride high school athletes.

    Keep trying.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Easy there. hahahahaha

I was merely saying that 2 people CAN carry a basketball team. I agreed with a previous comment posted by someone and argued against another. Isnt that what a blog is? To strike up conversation and opinions? And my supporting facts were the teams strenght of schedule and the athletic talent in little class D Nebraska schools. However it's your call on how you interpret these postings. We must be on different pages. You have an interesting thing going here and I like it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Is there a city code against burning trash? I am tried of walking outside to the stink of burning trash.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 'Dickie':

In recent weeks, we have had to screen several comments critical of DHS student athletes.

It is some of the most shameful behavior we have witnessed on this blog.

"Pathetic" may be the only term that sufficiently describes these comments and those who left them, especially if they are over the age of 18.

We apologize if we misinterpreted your communication.

    ReplyDelete
  24. A concern may be the number of students who are involved in athletics.

At what point is it feasable to continue sports programs if there are only a handfull of people out??

When we look at tax dollars and budgets is it cost effective to pay two coaches and pay for the travel involved if we ony have 7-8 kids out for a sport???

Coed, or intramurals may be just as good.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have a feel if people saw this blog and were thinking about moving here they would change there minds because there are to many people that whine and compain about things, You got the school built its time to shut the blog down!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Remember all those years when there were only 2-4 wrestlers participating? I wanted the program gone back then.

    ReplyDelete
  27. to all them people bashing wrestling if I remember right its been over 4 years since boys or girls basketball has made state.. So wrestling has been pulling the weight around for sometime now.. if you go around to other towns they are always talking about the wrestling program... Also your saying cut down on sports really people? You cut sports and I guarantee you will have kids transferring out of the school and more kids will be failing and getting into more trouble than you can image!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, no, no ... you misunderstood. I should have made it more clear that years ago when there were only a few kids out out for wresting (2 or 3) I said cut the program. Now look at it ... it's doing very well. To talk about cutting a program is crazy. I was just about to suggest we add more ... like girls softball or boys baseball since we don't have a track.

  29. Does any one know whats goin on in the old eastside bar?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think if the people with negative energy would turn that into something useful, such as community service, helping YOUR town! We would all be better off. Instead we have the positive people working until they tire of trying and only hearing complaints.
Teamwork is what helped the school system, identify and work to pass the bond issues. Teamwork is what got the picnic shelter built at the park, it is also the force that will complete the Nerud Fieldhouse.

On the sports issue, 8-9 kids on a team is better than 8-9 kids running around town. They are learning to work together, because as I learned spelling, there is no 'I' in 'TEAM.'

Dorchester has survived for over 100 years because there are team players. We are well into the next 100, hopefully Dorchester citizens will become neighbors and friends and make it a successful 200 years.

  31. About the East side bar.. - "Last Call", "Longhorn Saloon", "Pit Stop" - (How many others am I not remembering?).

I heard theyre making it a resturant...Not sure on the specific details though

  32. I see another dorchester teacher has resigned.

I think we need to look at what is happening with the turnover rate and why we cant keep teachers and administrators at our school.

If people were as concerned as much about a music or govt or math or any other program as much as they are with the sports program things might lead to an overall better school.

We got "new blood" on the board, so lets do something to make things better.

    ReplyDelete
  33. any idea where i can see a printed copy of the dorchester high school school board minutes?

I just read the crete news and cant seem to find the minutes.

ARe the listing of the bills part of the board minutes?? Why are they never posted?

I would love to know what we are spending our money on, and i bet there are others out there that would be interested too.

  34. The new "Eastside Bar" is going to be a steakhouse restaurant. I was informed of this by a very, very good source. If you have any questions, ask Ben Haufle or Sue Morris. They are in charge/own the new business. It will be opening as soon as they can get all of their permits. I, for one, am REALLY looking forward to it. It is really hard to get a good steak. Tell all of your friends!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That sounds good. I would love to go to a good steak house. But one problem is there going to be smoking there. I don't like to mix steaks and cancer. Hopefully it will be a clean air enviroment.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 'Phil':

As of June 2009, all Nebraska restaurants, pubs and other public gathering places will be required to prohibit smoking.

The statewide ban is set to go into effect June 1.

The only exemptions will be for tobacco shops, some hotel rooms and private homes used for businesses (unless they are licensed child care facilities).

    ReplyDelete
  37. So what you are saying is that I have go wait till june 1st to go eat at this new place. Got ya thanks. See you then.

    ReplyDelete
  38. hey phil .................... i think you need to take up smoking ........................... start by sucking on the tailpipe of my purring F150 .........................

  40. Thank you Dickie V. at least someone else was thinking that about cynical richard. Having your input on something is one thing, but cutting people down EVER time someone tries to put an input in. That gets old after a while. Cynical Richard just wondering if you were one of those people in high school that made fun of everyone?

    ReplyDelete
  41. 'Dickie' and 'Phil':

While we will not defend the comments made by 'Cynical', we will note that there is a difference between "cutting down" a fellow blogger in the virtual world and criticizing real-world residents of our community -- including high school students.

'Cynical' has crossed the line of proper online ediquette on many occassions. Indeed, we have rejected more of his comments than those of any other Times blogger.

That said, we find 'Cynical's' form of prodding much less harmful than cheap shots aimed at 14-18 year olds.

Those comments will never make their way onto the Times as long as we are doing the editing.

    Thank you for your concern.

  42. To all of us who are concerned about turnover at the school...lets look at ourselves first. What are we asking of them?

    ReplyDelete
  43. We only want you teachers to raise our kids ..................... while we wait by the mailbox for our welfare checks ........................... is that too much to ask .........................

    ReplyDelete
  44. If we want this blog to be productive and a place to showcase the community, I think you need to remove the current survey regarding which blogger gets our goat the most. I think you are opening up a can of worms. Everyone should be able to express themselves. By having the survey I feel you are demeaning them and asking others to publicly humiliate them. It's not only unkind, but an act of bullying. Dorchester is a great community with great people. Truth is, you don't have to agree with everyone all of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks Dorchester Times.....you have me listed in your poll for most irritating blogger! What next...a public stoning! By the way, the prolific JR Wolfe still likes me. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  46. 'Vested':

No disrespect intended. We still like you, too.

Your name just happened to appear in our top five of those who frequently leave comments here at the Times.

We will keep the stones on our gravel streets.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well, I got on here to see the alumni sports tournament events... I do agree that those of you who are complaining are giving "our town" a not so good view by those of us who get on here for information. Our family has lived in Dorch forever and some of you "new-comers" need to remember small town and friendly people. Most problems can be solved with a face to face conversation, not a gripe on a computer....
