DHS Boys Season Ends In Geneva

The Dorchester boys basketball season came to an abrupt end Tuesday night in Geneva as McCool Junction managed to narrowly defeat DHS for the second time this season. When the buzzer sounded at the first-round subdistrict game, the final tally was 58-54. McCool is listed as a contender in this week's Lincoln Journal Star Class D1 rankings.

The heartbreaker marked the last contest for Longhorn seniors Brandon Bruha and Logan Morris. DHS will feature a strong returning lineup next season with 6'8" Alex Walton, Brandon Zoubek, Spencer Kotas, Kyle Palky and Michael Lee leading the way.

Dorchester played one of the toughest schedules in Class D1 this season. Despite their seven losses, the team is still No. 29 in the Nebraska School Activities Association's Class D1 point standings, which is comprised of more than 6o teams from across the state.

The Longhorns (12-7) finish the 2008-09 campaign with the school's most successful boys basketball season in at 20 years. The 1988-89 DHS team, which played in Class C2, finished 14-5, according to an e-mail from a reader. No DHS boys team has bettered that winning percentage since.

The 1986-87 Longhorn boys team is the winningest team is school history at 19-2, according to the reader, and was regarded by some sports writers as the best team in Class C2 that year.

  1. I'm sad to see the winter sports season come to an end for both basketball teams and the wrestlers. You all gave us a lot to look forward to and a lot to be proud of.

    Nice going, ladies and gentlemen.

  4. I agree that the team should have a salty lineup next year. The CRC sheds a little of its talent this year so maybe 2009-10 will bring a less demanding schedule. It's tough playing four consecutive games of top 10 or contending teams.

  5. Good job guys on a great season. It can certainly be frustrating to lose in sub-districts, but the underclassmen will be able to learn from it and be better next year.

Village Dweller, weren't there a couple of 14-8 and/or 15-7 seasons about 10 years ago? I could be wrong about that.

  7. I don't mean to belittle the boys great season this year, but there have been two seasons with a better winning percentage than this years team since 1988-89. The 1998-99 team was 14-8 and the 2000-01 team was 15-7. The 2000-01 team even included a 2nd place finish in the CRC tournament.

Although with a 6'8" player next season, both those records my be surpassed.
