Time For A Tunnel Walk At DHS?

Recently, one of our readers sent us an e-mail suggesting that Dorchester High School should feature a "tunnel walk" for the Longhorns' football team.

Reader "CJ" wrote: "The Longhorns need to start a new [pre-game] tradition similar to that of the Huskers at Memorial Stadium."

CJ's idea would have music playing over the loud speakers to "fire up" the DHS faithful at home games as the Longhorns make their way from the locker rooms to Nerud Field -- similar to the Huskers' tunnel walk to the old Alan Parsons Project tune "Sirius." CJ said that Longhorn fans could "form a pathway" from the school's north parking lot to the field.

We thought the idea was worth sharing with other Times' readers.

What do you think of CJ's suggestion? Is it worth consideration? And what song would you choose for the DHS "tunnel walk"?

  1. I think it would be a good idea. I am not sure about what song I would pick, but I think having that would really increase the level of excitement for the football players and maybe even the fans. It might motivate the players to see they have some excitement in the crowd and they will be more pumped up and ready to play.

  2. This would be awesome for the volleyball team as well.

  3. All I have to say is I hope more people start coming to the games so you can form a line between the school and the field, and what a nightmare for the people at the gate collecting money.
Great Idea just tweak it a little.

  4. My vote would be for Enter Sandman by Metallica

  7. i agree that the girls will be good this year.but it would be nice if the girls would cheer for the guys at the football games like the guys did last year at the volleyball games.....any thoughts on the boys basketball season this year?

  9. "Nowhere Fast" by Fire Inc. Loop the intro and everyone will get "fired up."

  10. You know that DHS hasnt had cheerleaders for many years. A tunnel walk would be a big boost to student spirit. The student body could form a line from the locker rooms to the field/court. I hope the school leaders will give this some serious consideration.

  11. A guy who works for HuskerVision at the University once told me that in order for a song to get the fans motivated, it must be a tune nearly everyone knows. If DHS is going to have a tunnel walk, you have to go with the classics, otherwise the fans won't clap along and the whole thing will lose its purpose. I recommend........

"Don't bring me down" by ELO.

"Spirit in the sky" by Norman Greenbaum.

    "Heroes" by the Wallflowers.

  12. how about a compilation of songs picked by the senior leaders on the teams?

  13. If folks really want to get something going, it needs to get done right now, in order to be ready for the upcoming season (FB and VB).

Perhaps an advisory committee should be formed to look at this thing. A couple of D Club'ers, a couple student body reps, couple administrators, and someone from the general public. This way there is input from different population segments.

Maybe offer the thing as a contest. Have people submit their selections to the committee and the one's that are selected receive something like admission passes.

This could be something that gets everyone involved and invigorated once again.

Although I believe that a bunch of songs should be mixed together for the total effect, if I had to pick one song that everyone knows is Back in Black

  14. Are you serious with these songs?? Are we trying to fire up for a football game or Bingo?? I think maybe the choice of songs should be left to the athetes with approval fron their coaches and AD.

  15. I don't care what the song is as long as it ain't hip hop. At least show that our kids have an IQ over 10.

  16. How about Baba O'Reilly by the Who? Great intro and there is a part in the middle that would get everyone fired up.

Or, possibly Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie by the Chelewski Brothers....

  17. It's good to see so much interest.

I like the suggestion of Guns 'n Roses "Welcome to the Jungle." I've heard that played at Memorial Stadium before kickoffs and it really gets people pumped up. Imagine the team coming out on the field to that, baby!

  18. Whoa, whoa, wait just a minute here! I just read a post that said there have been no cheerleaders for several years at Dorchester??!?!?! What the $#@^*&! is wrong with you people? Was it too hard to get any girls to commit to a few hours a week to show some pride and spirit in their school/community? How sad!! Is this now a community that only comes to support the team if they have a winning season?
No wonder you can't get guys to go out for football!! What a drag! Not only does it bring down morale on the court/field, but probably the classroom as well.
Okay, yes I was a cheerleader at DHS and it was hard, I mean HARD to get peoples butts up off the bleachers to stand and clap for their team every now and then (and we had AWESOME teams in the late 80's). But it taught me alot about leadership, gave me a sense of belonging and I know the guys/girls appreciated us for the support. You can do your tunnel thing, yes it may be a source of excitement and motivation, but just until the clock starts ticking, then what???

  19. I think the cheerleaders were disbanded due to liability reasons. You would have to ask a school official about that one.

  20. The Cheerleaders were cut because of budget issues quite a few years ago. Not only because they had to pay a sponsor, but if someone went out and said they couldn't afford a uniform, the school would have to pay for one. I don't think the administration at the time wanted to keep the cheerleaders either. There has been talk of bringing them back, but no one has formally gone to the board and asked to get them back.

  21. Stampede - Chris LeDoux....its fitting

Those longhorn cattle, are gettin restless. God help us all, if they stampede.

  22. Let the players submit their top 5 choices. Coaches and administration should then make the final selection to insure the song lives up to school standards.

As for the organization and making sure this happens, it doesn't take a steering committee or brain surgery. Coaches should be able to handle this with support from the administration. Like the old Nike commercial says, JUST DO IT.

  23. Maybe this would be a good job for the booster club. The boys could come up with the song and some of the booster members could organize the lining up before the game. After a few games it will become habit.

good idea - but please don't forget the other sports!

  24. a few of the boys have been talking anbout this and they have a great idea for a song

  25. A TUNNELWALK WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO GET ALL THE STUDENTS INVOLVED, FROM THE KINDERGARTNERS TO THE SENIORS. A GOOD WAY TO BUILD A NEW CULTURE AND SCHOOL SPIRIT.

LET'S ASK THE SCHOOL TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

  26. The volleyball girls should enter the gym to this song or this song and let it play throughout the warm ups.

The football team should run to the field when this song is playing. When the players are stretching, this song should be played to set the mood.

Get inspired. Get motivated. Get after it.

  27. Ok so the huskers weren't so hot last year but everytime i heard their tunnel walk song i can't help but get pumped up. I don't know about you but thats gotta be a song that everybody knows no matter who you are.

  28. I like the 'Skers tunnel walk tune, too, but let's face it. It's theirs. DHS needs its on own entry song.

  29. I think it would be a great idea to have the team perform the Haka before their game. The Haka is a New Zealand war dance. It gets both the fan's and player's adrenaline running high. To view:

  30. I think it's a great idea.

  31. somebody contact the coaches or one of the boys and lets get this thing going

  32. I think any song by Chaka Khan or Menudo would be fitting. Possibly mix in a little Boyz 2 Men and you would have something. See you at the Q Saturday 90's grad.

  33. Huskers stink. DHS would beat them this year.

  34. A great song with a great uptempo beginning is Gone Away by the Offspring.

I'm not sure the subject matter is appropriate for a sports song but you don't have to play the lyrics if the song is just for the entrance.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't have a song suggestion for sports, but I recommend 'Leaving Town' from 2002 for a great graduation song with meaning. The band was a one-hit wonder so it would be a unique pick.

    ReplyDelete
  36. do they volleyball girls really need one? there is about 20 feet from the locker room to the gym. there wouldn't be very many people lined up.
the team captains should pick the songs for the football team
