Karpisek Aims To Recapture Some Of Local Money Sent Abroad

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the state senator representing the Dorchester area has introduced legislation to recapture some of the millions of dollars sent abroad by illegal and legal immigrants in communities like Crete.

District 32 Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber has introduced Legislative Bill 1071 to put a 1% excise tax on wire transfers of money. Revenue collected under the bill would go into the state school aid fund.

Karpisek told the World-Herald that LB1071 is intended to recapture money that is often wired abroad by immigrants to their home countries.

Karpisek said he hasn't found any information about how much money is wired from Nebraska to other countries, although he said estimates of wire transfers nationally range up to $25 billion a year.

He said money wired elsewhere typically is earned in Nebraska, often by immigrants who are here illegally, yet does not benefit the state or local economy. "It will at least capture a little bit of it," he said of his bill.

  2. Russ, Russ, Russ...What would Grandpa Karpisek think? I thought you were going to work to diversify Nebraska's economy and thereby reduce property taxes. You appear to be going down the path of least resistance. By the way, if you believe Nebraska is harboring large numbers of illegal immigrants, please call for raids on the meat packing plants.

  4. We should all be calling the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if we KNOW of illegal aliens or employers who hire them. Their number is 1-952-853-2550.

Grand Island residents called a year ago to complain about all the illegals working in the Swift plant and look what happend. I.C.E. came in and arrested and deported hundreds. We need to be vigilent and call often. We can't let this invasion go on without trying to stop the tide.

  5. Regardless of whether the wired money is earned by illegal or legal workers it would help to raise funds within the state's coffers and not sent abroad...which would be beneficial to everyone, eventually.

Now, if only we could place a tax on cynical richard's comments...

  6. Vested Czech: I can't believe that you don't think there are thousands of illegal immigrants. I say you go Mr. Karpisek. We need to recapture some of that money that they are sending away. They live our good life but not very often do they return the favor. "Go for it"

  7. Stop the invasion. Call the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency whenever you know of an illegal. The number is 952-853-2550.

  9. This problem will never go away until Mexico reforms its economy and NAFTA is revisited. Think about the situation with Canada. The border is porous but the U.S. does not appear to have a problem with Canadians working here illegally.
