Longhorns Aim High As New Season Nears

Only 25 days remain before the kick off of the 2007 Longhorn football season. Off-the-record conversations with both DHS football coaches confirm there is reason for much optimism this season, despite some key losses from last year's state-qualifying team, which suffered a 34-12 first-round loss to Winside.

DHS returns valuable experience at some key positions -- including at signal caller -- as the Longhorns become better acquainted with the schemes and play calling of the new coaching staff. We look for a solid showing on Nerud Field this year.

This year's DHS team will again be bracketed in Class D-1, district 1. There are few rule changes affecting gridiron play this season. However, the 35-point rule will again be in effect for all high school class play, requiring the game clock to run continuously whenever a 35-point differential in score is reached after the first half.

Here is this season's DHS schedule, according to the Nebraska School Activities Association. Our predictions follow in parentheses:

Dorchester 2007 Football Schedule

WEEK 1: Aug. 31 -- Exeter-Milligan @ home. (Times predicts win: DHS 30, EM 14)

  6. I remember the days that if you went head to head with Bob Zoubek or tried to go around the outside on Kelly Vyhnalek, you were going to eat some real estate and blow snot bubbles out of your nose. Talk about tough!!!!

  7. I've stood on the sideline of many games for many years. I could give you a long list of great DHS footballers (Drake No.1, Bobolz, Slama, Drake No. 2, etc.). Yet I've never seen a player crack an opponent's helmet except for Bobby Zoubek back in the mid-1980s. They don't come with bigger hearts or harder heads.

  8. The 1999 team finished with a 7-1 regular season. When was the last time there was one better?
Webb, Burkey and the crew got the job done.

    good job

  9. Poor, misguided child. Don't base the greatness of a DHS team on record alone. You can't compare past DHS teams playing class D-1 and D-2 schools to those who were playing Class C-1 teams on a regular basis. The teams of the mid- to late-80s would have smoked any of the 8-man teams that came later. Imagine Shane Carr, Cory Roth, Matt Bolton, Bob Zoubek, Brian Bruha, Don Bruha or a host of others lining up against any of the teams of the late 90s or after. Lord have mercy; throw in the towel, Mickey. Throw in the towel!!

i knew there would be some bonehead here who would do just what you did.

  11. Oh don't get your panties in a wad anonymous. I think the "kids" from the class of 1999 can handle a little ribbing. Get offline once in a while. Take a deep breath. Enjoy the real world occasionally. It isn't as bleak as you would like to believe. Feel better now???? Good. Oh and by the way, the 80s teams would still kick the butts of the 8-man teams. Stay in touch! :)

  12. CJ, records count.

    Show me some facts.

    7-1 vs.??????????????

I know, next thing you will tell me is that 8 man football isnt real football. I have heard it all so please come up with something original.

Where are you on that list of dorchester great athletes? I know you got the water for them, but that is ok, they need that too. You were a very important assest.

    have a good day

  14. CJ and Anonymous... thanks for turning a great supporting article into another annoying debate! Yes... that was sarcastic! Seriously, instead of fighting about the past, let's cheer on the future of Dorchester athletics!

  15. Gimme a break. Just ask ANY neutral observer (a non-parent) who watched both the DHS players of the 80s and those who came after. (I played in the 70s by the way.) The 80s DHS teams were consistently ranked in Class C year after year. It wasn't a one-year blip back then. Those great 80s teams went to state when going to state was a real accomplishment ... meaning a team needed at least 7 wins. Do you really think the teams of the late 90s could have held up against teams like Henderson, Yutan, Osceolla, Sutton??? You want facts? When was the last division I football player produced from DHS?? The 80s, when Bobolz playe for the Huskers. You can't win this arguement because there is no arguement. Every reader who saw both eras agrees with me. If they don't they are smoking something illegal. (Also those who complain about this debate keep reading. There must be something mildly entertaining about this conversation.)

  16. I am not reading this debate b/c it is entertaining, I am reading this debate b/c I am reading all the entries under this article... that's how most people choose to read the blog. I have great respect for those who played football in the 80's. Even though I was just a kid at the time and had no association with DHS at all, my brother-in-law is Bob Zoubek and so I am glad that people think he and the team he played with were one of Dorchester's best. Now I am just hoping that Brent and Ryan can bring the football program back to that level. One year doesn't prove anything, it is a great start, but they are going to have to work extremely hard to keep this up. It's when you have a good football team for years at a time that your team is remembered, not just one 7-1 season. The only people who remember that way down the road are those who played and their parents...(And maybe Brent Zoubek since he can remember every score of every football game from years and years back.) There are some tough teams on the schedule this year. So, good luck coaches and football players!

  17. How can anyone that knows DHS football forget about Shane T. Carr!?!!! He was the backbone of the team in the late 80's, he went on to play, and start, for Nebraska Wesleyan. Oh, and by the way, he still has at least one or two strength and conditioning records TO DATE. Shane was also invited to the Dallas Cowboy's mini-camp to try out. Just ask humble Shane next time you see him.

  18. Are there any older people on this blog???

Remember the Pioneer Conference? There was a mixed match of schools, some were almost Class B Schools back then.....when most of the kids in school lived in the country! My ex-county attorney up here in York, said the toughest teams he played in high school....he went to Utica Public.........was Dorchester in the early sixties. Remember Tesar, and Bullock? And the late 60's and early 70's. When Ron Velder and that bunch were playing football, every team was 11 man. We were even playing Milford, who was lower class B back then. We only had four classes back then. And one of those years, we were ranked class C. I believe it was 1970 when our class of 36 students started our Freshman year. (We did not graduate that many though) We had some fantastic B-Ball teams back then as well. In fact so many went out for basketball, they cut us marginal players, and that is when they started wrestling!!!!And As I recall, there were some fantastic teams in the 50's as well.

Good luck Longhorns, you have a lot of history to live up to.

    Class of 74
